I'm Helena Bonamcarter, and for BBC Radio 4, I'm back with a brand new series of history's secret heroes.

And he tells her that she will be sent to France as a secret agent.

She will will work undercover and if she is caught, she's going to be shot.

It's World War II and the stakes couldn't be higher.

Someone came to the door.

They were looking to murder him.

But he knew that they were coming and he escaped by going across the rooftops and escaping to Holland.

These are stories of ordinary people taking extraordinary risks.

There were three hiding places within that shop, three false closets where you you could hide people.

They are only allowed to leave under cover of darkness, but they spend their days locked in a closet and with the young women bringing them food.

She was about to drop this lighting bomb and took out the fuse, but the bomb got caught in the mittens that she

strapped around her neck.

She had about 10 seconds.

And tales of remarkable adventure.

It was all, let's live for the men that we might die tomorrow.

They loved life, they loved love, they loved drink, they loved anything that they had.

Had to be done to excess because it was living because they might die.

With drastic circumstances leading to astonishing scenarios.

Churchill's view is, has this man lost his mind?

And that's not a stupid question.

These heroes from all over the world are united in the strength of their conviction.

She was a born soldier.

Full of courage, determination, patriotism to serve her country, and she was a feminist.

She's a freedom fighter in its widest sense.

It just makes me even prouder that this man who came to a foreign country left everything that he knew was familiar to him behind in Nigeria, that during Britain's darkest hour he made a phenomenal contribution.
