On a winter morning in 2015, an electrician is murdered in a quiet Amsterdam suburb.

It looks like an assassination, but there's no motive.

The Dutch police can't figure out what's going on.

Eventually, the killing leads investigators into a web of cocaine loads, money laundering and shadowy government agencies that stretches from Dublin to Dubai.

At the center is a cocaine super cartel and a secret proxy war between democracies and dictatorships.

I'm Miles Johnson and I'm an investigative reporter for the Financial Times.

And I've always really been interested in the ways that crime and business meet.

because they always meet, because crime is a business.

The global global black market is worth trillions of dollars.

It's this vast ocean of shadow cash.

We know it's there and we can feel its impact, but it's often hard to see.

That makes reporting on it pretty tough.

But occasionally, you can get a glimpse of what's happening under the surface.

A man in his 50s was shot with one bullet in the head.

These are not bedtime stories, this is getting real.

There's always an element of luck.

You don't know if somebody behind that door has a gun.

It became clear to me as a prosecutor that what they were doing is they were using the fighters as a way to move money through the system.

We were drug traffickers from South America looking to launder their money.

And then sometimes, if you keep digging, you start to see a much bigger pattern.

The cartels, they run these organizations like a Fortune 500 company in the sense of they want to maximize profits and reduce risks.

All criminals ultimately wish and aim for becoming legitimate to transitioning into legitimate businessmen, bringing the wealth they make with them.

This season on the multi-award winning podcast, Hot Money, the Dubai Supercartel.
