It's my attempt to be helpful for all of those lore super fans out there or brand new listeners who want to learn more about the same topic we covered on this week's brand new lore episode.
You know, to go a bit deeper, thus, deeper lore.
This week with episode 259 Where the Heart Is, we go about as classic as we can get with another exploration of creepy haunted house folklore.
This is probably one of the oldest corners of folklore and it's undeniably one of the most popular.
Honestly, it's pretty easy to see why.
That safe, guarded place that we all call home, suddenly invaded by invisible forces that bring chaos and danger into our lives.
No wonder haunted houses are a standard feature of Halloween, horror movies, and novels like Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House or Richard Matheson's Hell House, which, if you love amazing, frightening fiction, those are two absolute classic novels to read this fall.
You will thank me later.
Basically, these stories make sense, they work, and they always seem to be entertaining.
Another fun side note, I have distinct memories from my childhood of going down into our dark, dank Illinois basement between the furnace, the piles of boxes, and the washer and dryer, and filling those narrow walkways with Halloween props and tripwires to make my own haunted house.
I don't think I ever got anyone other than my brothers to walk through it in the dark, but man, oh man, was it fun to put together.
Anyway, haunted houses.
I think we'd be hard pressed to find anyone who has never bumped into that idea.
And as we learned in this week's episode, these kinds of stories are at least 2,000 years old.
So I think they tick all the boxes required to classify some folklore as universal.
But this week's episode isn't the first time that we've explored houses filled with spectral invaders.
If haunted house stories are your jam, here are three more episodes that promise to deliver the ghostly goods.
First, download episode 20, Homestead.
This is an oldie going all the way back to 2015, so prepare yourself for this one to sound a bit ancient.
Although, there's a remastered version in the podcast feed.
If you like the more polished, modern lore sound, it is totally your call.
Anyway, this one is all about some very disturbing haunted homes, focusing on the Benton homestead in Connecticut.
It's a great way to feel some chills in the middle of summer, so do check it out.
Next, head over to episode 79, Locked Away.
We have all all heard of the Winchester rifle, but this episode explores the darker side of the people behind it.
Sarah Winchester built a weird and wonderful mansion around the folklore that said that she could keep the ghosts of her past at bay, get lost in her massive mansion, and this fun episode that takes you through it.
And finally, give a listen to episode 153, Hold On.
Instead of focusing on one big haunted house, this episode takes you to the city of Baltimore, where a bunch of haunted buildings await you.
I know everyone thinks of Edgar Allan Poe when they hear the name Baltimore, but there is so much more to it than that.
So, there you go.
Follow up this week's brand new episode with a trip into the past.
