This is a short bonus episode designed to be a topical guide to the most recent episode of lore.
I've explained it before, but for those who are new, Deeper Lore is here to help you find similar episodes to the most recent one.
There are so many episodes that are cataloged now after 9 plus years that it's pretty difficult to track down specific ones.
It's not a gimmick to grab downloads or sell ads, it's just my attempt at a helpful tool for the super fan who wants to take the ideas and concepts from the most recent episode of lore to go a bit deeper thus deeper lore this week with episode 256 cursed we get back to one of those really core ideas that you find all throughout folklore pretty much no matter where you go around the world curses it truly is an ancient idea and there are a ton of examples that i could reference here but my favorite story is probably one from an episode last year about sir mortimer wheeler an archaeologist who discovered a strange connection between two small objects.
One was a gold ring that had been found in England by a farmer back in 1785, and the other was a scrap known as a curse tablet, found just 100 miles from the ring's home, but many, many years later.
The weird thing about them, though, was that they both had the same Roman name inscribed on them, Senechianus.
According to the curse tablet, a man named Silvanius had lost his precious ring and believed that it had been stolen by Senechianus, which was true.
Senechianus even went as far as to engrave his own name on his ill-gotten goods.
But Sir Wheeler wasn't the one who unraveled the story of this lost ring.
No, he enlisted the help of his friend John, who was really good with Latin.
John, Ronald, Rule, Tolkien, as in J.R.R.
Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings.
Honestly, if that doesn't give you chills, I don't know what will.
Anyway, curses are a big topic and we've covered them many times before from various angles.
So here are three older episodes that will feel like companions to this week's brand new one.
First, go download episode 13 Off the Path.
This classic 2015 episode was our first step into curse territory.
We tackle some of the bigger and more well-known curse stories there, but then we pivot into a weird werewolf curse that is super fun.
Do check it out.
Next, re-listen to episode 127, Tipping the Scales.
I don't know about you, but when I hear the word curse, I immediately think of King Tut.
There's this overwhelming connection between curses and ancient Egypt, and the boy Pharaoh in particular.
Not a lot of people really understand why that association came about in the first place, so this episode dives deep into the events and ideas that made it happen.
Honestly, don't skip this one.
And finally, give a listen to episode 221, Remote Control.
This one features our JRR Tolkien story, and it uses that as a springboard to dive into the wild and crazy world of a particular kind of curse, love potions.
It's really a fantastic lesson in ancient ideas and priorities and fears.
So there you go.
Follow up this week's brand new episode with a trip into the past.
