Trump temporarily backs off tariffs, Hamas rejects Trump's warnings, and the lawmaker who interrupted Trump's address is censured. I'm Daily Wire editor in chief John Bickley with Georgia Howe.
It's Thursday, March 6th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update. President Trump announced he's loosening tariffs on Mexico and Canada.
Daily Wire reporter Amanda Prestigiacomo has the details. Trump signed executive actions on Thursday to delay tariffs on goods covered under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement until April 2nd.
In a Truth Social post, Trump first singled out the exemption for Mexico out of respect for President Claudia Scheinbaum, setting their cooperation on border security and combating fentanyl trafficking. Later in the day, though, Trump included Canada in on the pause.
The president noted that this is a temporary measure as leaders work together on these pressing issues. Hamas has shrugged off Trump's latest warning, refusing to release any more hostages without a ceasefire in Gaza.
Daily Wire reporter Cassie Akiva has more. The terror group insists negotiations are the only way forward, despite Trump's post on social media demanding an immediate release, or in his words, quote, there will be hell to pay.
The Truth Social post came after the president met with several former hostages in Washington. They thanked the president for his unwavering support.
Hey, I'm very good, Sophie. We're alive.
It's three people. Thank you.
Thank you very much. Thank you.
Thank you so much. Trump has vowed to send Israel everything it needs to eliminate Hamas if the hostages aren't freed.
Meanwhile, the White House defended ongoing U.S. negotiations with Hamas, citing efforts to protect American lives.
Hamas is believed to still hold 24 living hostages, along with the bodies of 34 others. Talks on a second ceasefire phase remain stalled.
Trump's pick to lead the Food and Drug Administration faced his first test before the Senate committee today. Johns Hopkins surgeon Dr.
Marty McCary testified before the Senate Health Committee as he seeks to lead the agency that he's openly criticized. Here's a bit from his opening statement.
Half of our nation's children are sick and nobody has really been doing anything meaningful on this front until we have gotten new momentum and enthusiasm from Secretary Kennedy and President Trump to finally address the root causes of these diseases, general body inflammation and generalized insulin resistance. And food has a big part of it.
When we eat foods with a lot of molecules that do not appear in nature, these are chemicals. These are chemicals that the industry insists are safe, a subset of which are concerning.
There's a body of research now that suggests concern with some of these ingredients. We have to look at those ingredients.
McCary has pledged to improve transparency and focus on food's impact on public health. His confirmation comes amid deep FDA budget cuts and Robert F.
Kennedy Jr.'s push to re-evaluate vaccine policies. The illegal immigrant who set a sleeping New York subway rider on fire may, for now, avoid being detained by ICE.
Daily Wire senior editor Ash Short has more. Homeland Security Secretary Christine Noem says New York City officials plan to ignore the ICE detainer placed on Sebastian Zepeda.
Zepeda, who faces charges of murder and arson, was living in a migrant shelter after illegally re-entering the U.S. Noem condemned the city's sanctuary policies, urging Governor Kathy Hochul to suspend protections for violent offenders.
Video footage shows bystanders and police walking past the burning victim, prompting outrage. ICE continues to push for custody of Zepeda while city officials remain uncooperative.
Here's Noem visiting the location where Zepeda allegedly committed the horrific crime. I'm standing at the location where an illegal criminal lit a woman on fire.
He lit her on fire as she was sleeping on the subway and then sat down on this bench and watched her learn life. Listen, it's the most grave act that a human being can commit against another person.
And with the leadership of President Trump, we're going to make sure it never happens again. ABC News has sent nearly 200 employees packing.
That includes much of the staff on Good Morning America's third hour. The layoffs come as part
of the cuts ordered by parent company Walt Disney Co. Staffers described a grim mood,
with one calling the cuts a massacre. The House has voted to censure Democrat Congressman Al Green following his outburst during Trump's address to Congress.
By its adoption of House Resolution 189, the House has resolved that Representative Al Green be censured. Ten Democrats joined Republicans voting to pass the censure vote, making the Texas rep the 28th lawmaker in history to be censured.
Green was removed from the chamber after shouting that Trump lacked a mandate. Here's the moment that got him kicked out of the House.
Mr. Green, take your seat.
Take your seat, sir. Take your seat.
Finding that members continue to engage in willful and concerted disruption of proper decorum, the chair now directs the sergeant at arms to restore order. Remove this gentleman from the chamber.
And the 13 year old brain cancer survivor honored during President Trump's address has some strong words for the president's critics. In an interview on War Room, DJ Daniel warned Democrats, if I see you being mean to him, I'm coming after you.
If you're a Democrat and you're being mean to President Trump, I'm on your bumper. Daniel, who's been battling cancer since 2018, received a standing ovation as Trump named him an honorary secret service agent.
Notably, many Democrats did not stand for that moment. DJ's father also fired back at MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, who criticized Trump's tribute, telling her to shut her mouth if she has nothing nice to say.
All right, those are your drive home updates this afternoon. To learn more about these stories, go to dailywire.com.
And in case you missed it this morning, we covered some major stories, including the continued fallout from Trump's address, the testimony of several sanctuary city mayors, and the latest in the
saga of New York's striking corrections officers. Thanks for tuning in.
We'll be back tomorrow
morning with another full edition of Morning Wire.
