New troops in Chicago!

The city of Chicago is racing for the arrival of immigration enforcement officers and National Guard troops.

Mayor Brandon Johnson joined labor leaders at a rally today to denounce that idea.

Are you prepared to defend this land?

This land that was built by slaves, a land that was built by Indigenous people, a land that is built by workers.

Are you prepared to defend this land?

Johnson recently signed an executive order that restricts cooperation between Chicago police and federal officers.

In Missouri today, thousands rallied against a plan to redraw that state's congressional districts at the behest of President Trump.

As St.

Louis Public Radio's Jason Rosenbaum reports, some critics see the move as part of an effort to shield Trump from accountability.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe called a special session slated to begin on Wednesday that would convert Democratic Congressman Emmanuel Cleaver's Kansas City-based district into a GOP-leaning seat.

Trump has been pressuring Republican-led states to engage in rare mid-decade redistricting ahead of next year's midterm elections.

Leslie Hinyard attended a rally outside of St.

Louis.

She says the redistricting shows that Republicans know they're in trouble next year.

Clearly, if you have to do that, it's because the people would like something else and someone else in power.

Missouri Democrats don't have the power to stop the GOP-controlled legislature from passing a new map, but they are almost certain to challenge it in court.

Rescue operations are continuing in eastern Afghanistan, where an earthquake killed more than 800 people and injured thousands more.

The worst damage was in the mountain areas in Nurgal district in Kuner province.

Entire villages were destroyed.

Rescue teams couldn't reach them until morning because the roads were blocked and helicopter couldn't land in the mountain at night.

Many people have died because they were trapped under the rebel and couldn't be rescued in time.

I saw the post in Facebook.

They're saying in one village, every 10 minutes there is a funeral.

The BBC Sayyed Nizami reporting.

Palestinian health officials say at least 31 people were killed during Israeli airstrikes today across the Gaza Strip.

Israeli officials say the forces only target militants and blame Hamas for civilian casualties in densely populated areas.

The Israeli government had ordered civilians to leave Gaza City ahead of plans to seize the area.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is heading to Beijing to attend a military parade with his Chinese and Russian counterparts.

The leaders also plan to take part in events celebrating the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The events, being attended by leaders of 26 nations in all, comes as China's president Xi Jinping floats the idea of a new global world order that is not led by the U.S.

or Europe.

The social media platform TikTok has suspended its live streaming function in Indonesia in wake of deadly protests.

As NPR's John Rewich reports, the unrest was sparked by anger over perks for lawmakers.

TikTok says it was acting out of an abundance of caution

The protests kicked off last week after reports emerged that members of Indonesia's parliament were receiving monthly housing allowances that far exceeded minimum wage in the capital, Jakarta.

The protests have since spread to cities around the country.

Protesters have set fire to government buildings and clashed with riot police, and there have been reports of looting.
