Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Rahm. Police in Michigan say at least one person is dead, nine others injured, after a shooting during a church service this morning.

The church was also set on fire. Brett Dahlberg with member station Michigan Public reports.

Authorities say they believe the suspect also started the fire that engulfed the Church of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, about 50 miles outside of Detroit.

William Renyi is the Grand Blanc Township Chief of Police. He described a chaotic scene that unfolded during the worship service.
He drove his vehicle through the front doors of the church.

He then exited his vehicle, firing several rounds at individuals within the church.

Renyu says there were hundreds of people at the service, and he expects there will be more victims who are unable to escape the fire. For NPR News, I'm Brett Dahlberg.

Mayor Eric Adams says he's withdrawing from the New York City mayor's race. The move announced on social media today shakes up a race that has been dominated by newcomer Zo Ron Mamdani.

NPR's Brian Mann has more.

In a video posted on social media, Adams said he's dropping out after facing what he described as unfair investigations that made it difficult for him to raise money and campaign.

Although this is the end of my re-election campaign, it is not the end of my public service. Last year, the U.S.

Justice Department charged Adams with bribery and campaign finance offenses, later dropped by the DOJ under President Trump.

With Adams out, Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist who's led in the polls, faces a tighter contest against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo stepped down as governor in 2021 following a sexual misconduct scandal. In this race, Cuomo has sought to portray Momdani as too far to the left.

Republican Curtis Sleewa rounds out the three-way race. Brian Mann, NPR News, New York.

President Trump says he's ordered troops to protect immigration and customs enforcement facilities in Portland, Oregon, and that he has authorized the use of, quote, full force.

NPR's Kat Lansdorf reports it's the latest instance of Trump threatening to deploy the military to a U.S. city.

In a social media post Saturday, Trump called Portland, Oregon, quote, war-ravaged, which is not the reality on the ground.

Local officials in Oregon dispute Trump's claims that the city is unsafe or in need of troops and have been urging residents to remain peaceful.

Trump has been making these kinds of threats against a variety of cities, all Democratically led, for months now, including Washington, D.C., where Trump has federal control, and more than 2,000 National Guard troops have been stationed for more than a month.

Legal experts worry that these continued threats and deployments are normalizing troops on U.S. streets and challenge long-standing laws that limit the role of America's military domestically.

Kat Lonsdorf, NPR News, Washington. Congressional leaders from both parties are expected at the White House tomorrow to meet with President Trump.

Unless Congress acts, the government will run out of money Tuesday night. This is NPR News.

President Trump is also meeting at the White House tomorrow with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. They're to discuss a possible framework to end Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza.

International pressure is mounting to end the war. Several Western allies have recognized a Palestinian state over Israeli objections.

The medication mifipristone was approved on this day 25 years ago.

NPR's Selena Simmons-Duffin reports the food and drug review process was longer and more thorough than usual because of political opposition.

Mifipristone works by blocking progesterone, a hormone that's necessary for a pregnancy to continue.

In medication, abortion and miscarriage management, the pill is used in combination with another medication, mesoprostal, which causes uterine cramping.

Mifopristone was approved and in use in Europe for years before it became available in the U.S.

There are continued legal efforts to curb access, and the Trump administration may try to do so through regulation.

But reproductive rights advocates point out the safety and efficacy of the medication has been proven in more than 100 studies.

According to the FDA, over the decades that it's been available, it's been used by nearly 6 million women. Selena Simmons-Duffin, NPR News.
