Speaker 2 Stocks opened sharply higher this morning after strong earnings from NVIDIA and a report showing employers added more jobs than expected in September.

Speaker 2 NPR Scott Horsley reports the Dow Jones industrial average jumped about 670 points in early trading.

Speaker 3 The jobs report, which was held up for nearly seven weeks by the government shutdown, shows employers added 119,000 jobs in September, but job gains for the two previous months were revised down.

Speaker 3 September hiring was mixed, with bars and restaurants and hospitals adding workers while factories and warehouses cut back.

Speaker 3 Stock in computer chip maker NVIDIA jumped this morning after another blockbuster earnings report the companies considered a bellwether of the the boom in artificial intelligence.

Speaker 3 And sales of existing homes inched up in October. The National Association of Realtors says the average sales price during the month was just over $415,000.

Speaker 2 Some lawmakers in the House are considering whether to impose a ban on stock trading by members of Congress. The House Administration Committee held a hearing yesterday.

Speaker 2 One witness was Dan Savikas of the group Taxpayers Protection Alliance. He cited public data that show several dozen lawmakers had stock performances that beat the SP 500 index last year.

Speaker 4 This is not limited to one political party or another. On average, members of both political parties outperformed the market.

Speaker 4 This only lends further credence to the public perception that congressional representatives are using their office for personal gain rather than public service.

Speaker 2 Some lawmakers say they will push forward with a proposed ban on congressional stock trading.

Speaker 2 President Trump says he has signed the bill to compel the Justice Department to publish all files on late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Speaker 2 The agency will redact names of victims and information about ongoing investigations. Trump's calling for probes of high-profile Democrats who had ties to Epstein.

Speaker 2 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has made a dramatic shift in the agency's position on the relationship between vaccines and autism. NPR's Rob Stein has more.

Speaker 5 The CDC's website now says a link between vaccines and autism cannot be ruled out. That's a sharp reversal from the CDC's stance that there is no link.

Speaker 5 The change comes even though a connection between vaccines and autism has long been debunked by a large body of high-quality research. But Health Secretary Robert F.
Kennedy Jr.

Speaker 5 has long promoted the discredited claim. The CDC's change is alarming public health experts.

Speaker 5 They are already worried about a drop in childhood vaccination, which has led to a resurgence of dangerous childhood diseases like measles and whooping cough. Rob Stein in Pure News.

All were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Speaker 2 Novelist Robbie Alamandine is this year's winner of the National Book Award for Fiction.

Speaker 2 NPR's Andrew Limbaugh reports the award is one of the most prestigious in American literature and was given out at a ceremony in New York last night.

Speaker 7 During his acceptance speech, Alamedine took the time to thank his agent, his editor, and a few other people, including his psychiatrist, his drug dealers, and thank all gastrointestinal doctors.
