Speaker 2 Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia says she'll resign from Congress on January 5th.

Speaker 2 Greene was once a loyal supporter of President Trump, but has offered criticism of him recently, particularly in regard to Epstein's, the Epstein files, and Pierre Stephen Fowler.

Speaker 3 It's also worth noting that it's because this split has been a long time coming.

Speaker 3 Marjorie Taylor Greene has been at the forefront of criticisms this year of Republicans who haven't always agreed with Trump 2.0 policy planks.

Speaker 3 On the foreign policy front, that includes the bombing of Iran in support of Israel's war in Gaza.

Speaker 3 Domestically, there's been riffs over some of the tariff policies and the subsequent walkbacks the administration has done.

Speaker 2 Trump now calls her Marjorie Trader Green and had said he would endorse a challenger against her in next year's primary elections.

Speaker 2 President Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zoran Mandani met at the White House on Friday and afterward appeared warm and friendly while talking with reporters.

Speaker 2 Mandani has called the Trump administration authoritarian, while Trump once labeled Mandani a total nutjob.

Speaker 2 Trump spoke of how impressed he was with Mandani, and he said at least some conservatives will be surprised by him.

Speaker 2 Most air traffic controllers will not qualify for $10,000 bonuses bonuses for perfect attendance during the federal government shutdown, MPR's Jill Rose explains.

Speaker 4 Only 311 air traffic controllers out of more than 10,000 will qualify for the cash bonuses, according to the controller's union.

Speaker 4 Controllers were required to work without pay during the 43-day shutdown.

Speaker 4 Some took on second jobs, and many called out sick as they dealt with the financial pressure of missing two full paychecks and part of a third.

Speaker 4 Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says the bonuses, originally suggested by President Trump, are intended to reward the patriotic men and women who did not miss a single shift during the shutdown.

Speaker 4 But some controllers called the bonuses unfair and a betrayal. Their union said, quote, more than 311 of these dedicated professionals were instrumental in keeping America moving.

Speaker 2 People who buy their own health insurance on healthcare.gov and people who get health insurance through work are facing higher costs next year.

Speaker 2 As NPR Selena Simmons Duffin reports, there's a surprising reason, though, for rising health costs in the U.S.

Speaker 5 There's a common misconception that insurance company profits are the main driver of rising prices, says Cynthia Cox of the nonpartisan health research organization KFF.

Speaker 5 Instead, she says it's what doctors and hospitals charge that drives higher costs compared to other countries.

Speaker 6 A hospital visit in the United States costs more. A doctor's visit costs more.
The same prescription drug costs more.

Speaker 5 She says it's not that Americans use more health care.

Speaker 6 We have slightly fewer doctor's visits and slightly shorter hospital stays than people in similarly large and wealthy countries do.

Speaker 5 Americans just pay more for the care that they do use. Selena Simmons-Deffin, NPR News.

Speaker 2 I'm Dale Willman and you're listening to NPR News.

Speaker 2 In Ohio, a police officer was acquitted Friday of murdering a pregnant woman outside a Columbus area Kroger store in 2023. 21-year-old Takia Young was seven months pregnant when she was killed.

Speaker 2 From Ember Station, W.O.S.U. George Shilcock has our story.

Speaker 7 Young was accused of shoplifting, prompting Blendon Township Police Officer Connor Grubb and another officer to confront her. Young attempted to drive away in her car as Grubb stood in front of it.

Speaker 7 He shot her once through the windshield. Young's grandmother, Nadine Young, was emotional after the judge read the verdict.

Speaker 7 Grubb's attorney, Mark Collins, says the trial was difficult for Grubb and his family.

Speaker 8 They understand the frustration, the sorrow, and the pain that Ms. Young's family feels, and it's real.

Speaker 7 Colin says Grubb hasn't decided whether he'll remain a police officer. For NPR News, I'm George Shocock in Columbus.

Speaker 2 Gino Titicole is hoping for a $4 million payday at the LPGA Tour Championship in Naples, Florida this weekend. She shot a 63 on Friday to take a three-stroke lead.

Speaker 2 See Young Kim shot six birdies on the back, nine for a 66. She sits three strokes off the lead in second, and Nellie Korda finished with a 64 in third and five strokes back.

Speaker 2 Andrew Novak has a one-stroke lead at the PGA Classic in St. Simmons Island, Georgia this weekend.
He took the lead in Friday's second round by shooting 11 birdies and now sits at 16 under 126.

Speaker 2 Patrick Rogers and Michael Thorbjornsson are one stroke back at 15 under par. Grayson Sig and Sammy Valamaki are in third.
