and Ukrainian representatives met Sunday to discuss a U.S. proposal to end the war in Ukraine.
Russia started that war more than three years ago. The U.S.

Speaker 2 plan is widely seen as favoring Russia, and Pierre's Daniel Kurzlaben reports.

Speaker 3 A joint statement released by the White House said that U.S. and Ukraine officials met in Geneva, Switzerland.

Speaker 3 Together, the two countries called the discussions, quote, constructive, focused, and respectful. The 28-point plan was written without significant input from Ukraine or its European allies.

Speaker 3 It calls for Ukraine to give up some territory to Russia, shrink its military, and would block Ukraine from joining NATO.

Speaker 3 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the plan last week in a video address, saying his country faces a choice between losing its dignity or losing the U.S.

Speaker 3 as a key international partner. In response to a reporter's question, Trump said this weekend that this plan is not his, quote, final offer to Ukraine.

Speaker 2 Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney doesn't appear to be in any rush to resume trade talks with Washington, as Dan Karpenchuk reports he made the suggestion while attending the G20 leaders meeting in Johannesburg.

Speaker 4 On the sidelines of the talks, Kearney said he would resume discussions with the U.S., quote, when it's appropriate, adding that he didn't have any pressing issue to talk about with President Trump.

Speaker 4 Carney said his government is busy with Canada's future and with building new trade partnerships around the globe.

Speaker 4 Trump abruptly halted trade talks with Canada last month after an Ontario ad that featured the voice of former President Ronald Reagan, saying tariffs do not work in the long term.

Speaker 4 Ottawa was in talks to try to lower U.S. import tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos.

Speaker 4 Kearney said he is open to dialogue with Washington and that there will be conversations with Trump most likely in the next couple of weeks. For NPR News, I'm Dan Karpenchuk in Toronto.

Speaker 2 New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani says he stands by his characterization of President Trump as a despot and a fascist. His comments follow a favorable meeting with Trump at the White House on Friday.

Speaker 2 Mamdani says he will still be able to work with Trump on a number of issues that are currently facing New York, but immigration, he says, is not one of them.

Speaker 5 City government can be in touch with the federal government on around 170 serious crimes. The concern comes from beyond those crimes.

Speaker 5 The many New Yorkers who at this moment are being arrested, they're being detained, they're being deported for the crime of showing up to a regular court appearance.

Speaker 2 Thanksgiving is almost here, and AAA says the number of people traveling home for the holiday will hit a new high this year.

Speaker 2 That auto agency says 73 million people will be traveling more than 50 miles by car this week. That's more than 20% of all Americans.

Speaker 2 AAA also says another 6 million people will be traveling by air, but it says that number could drop if people remain concerned about recent flight disruptions from the government shutdown.

Speaker 2 At least three people are dead following an attack by suicide bombers on Pakistani police in the northwest part of that country Monday.

Speaker 2 Officials say one bomber detonated his explosives at the main gate of the federal police headquarters. A second bomber was shot and killed outside the facility.

Speaker 2 New research suggests that weight loss drugs, such as Wegovi and Zeppbound, only work when they target a certain area in the brain that can cause nausea.

Speaker 2 And Pierre's John Hamilton has more from the Society for Neuroscience meeting in California.

Speaker 6 About half the people who take these drugs feel queasy. That's because this class of drugs, called GLP-1, affects an area of the brainstem known as the vomit center.

Speaker 6 So researchers did an experiment that kept the drug from reaching this brain area in mice.

Speaker 6 Warren Jakowicz of the University of Michigan says that kept the mice from feeling sick, but also meant they didn't lose weight.

Speaker 7 And so it's very challenging, we think, right now, to be able to separate these side effects like nausea from GLP-1's intended effects like weight loss.

Speaker 6 Even so, companies that sell GLP-1 drugs are still trying to get rid of this side effect. It's a major reason many patients stopped taking the medications.

Speaker 2 The Broadway musical adaptation Wicked for Good overwhelmed the box office this weekend. In its debut weekend, it brought in $150 million domestically and $226 million globally.

Speaker 2 It's a major showing in what has been a lukewarm year for movies. Women made up 71% of ticket buyers.
