Speaker 1 This message comes from ADP. Whether it's a last-minute policy change or adding a new company holiday, anything can change the world of work.
Speaker 1 From HR to payroll, ADP helps businesses take on the next anything. ADP always designing for people.
Speaker 2 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dave Mattingly. President Trump says he'll be deploying hundreds more National Guard troops to Washington, D.C.
Speaker 2 after two members of the West Virginia Guard were shot and critically wounded yesterday.
Speaker 2 They were shot near a subway station not far from the White House in what the president describes as an ambush-style attack by an armed man.
Speaker 2 As NPR's Deepa Shivaram reports, the Department of Homeland Security identifies the suspected gunman as an Afghan national who entered the U.S. after the Taliban retook power in Afghanistan in 2021.
Speaker 3
Trump said the shooter came to the U.S. from Afghanistan in September 2021 in the aftermath of the U.S.
pullout from Kabul during the Biden administration. He said now the U.S.
Speaker 3 needs to re-examine the refugees who came from Afghanistan under the Biden administration. There are roughly 200,000 of them in the U.S.
Speaker 4 We must now re-examine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden.
Speaker 4 And we must take all necessary measures to ensure the removal of any alien from any country who does not belong here or add benefit to our country.
Speaker 3 Trump did not provide details on how that re-examination would take place or what the timeline would be. Deepa Shivaram, NPR News.
Speaker 2 The Justice Department is expected to appeal after a federal judge dismissed criminal indictments against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Speaker 2 NPR's Mara Lyason reports.
Speaker 6 After a judge threw out the indictments of Comey and James, the White House promised to, quote, take all available legal action to hold Letitia James and James Comey accountable.
Speaker 6 Ironically, the judge who dismissed the cases pointed to a ruling in favor of President Trump in the case against him that alleged he mishandled classified documents.
Speaker 6 That case was dismissed after a judge ruled that special counsel Jack Smith was not properly appointed because the Senate had not confirmed him.
Speaker 6 The judge in the Comey and James cases followed the same reasoning, ruling that the appointment of U.S.
Speaker 6 Attorney Lindsey Halligan, who brought the cases, was invalid because she too had failed to get Senate confirmation. Mara Lyasson, NPR News.
Speaker 2 Comey was accused of making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional investigation stemming from testimony he gave in 2020.
Speaker 2 James had been accused of mortgage fraud stemming from the purchase of a home in Virginia.
Speaker 2 Authorities in Hong Kong say the death toll has risen to at least 55 after a high-rise apartment fire spread to other nearby buildings.
Speaker 2 Many people are still reported missing after the fire spread across seven of eight buildings in the complex. Hundreds of people were evacuated to temporary shelters.
Speaker 2 The origin of the fire has been traced to an exterior scaffolding, and at least three people have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. This is NPR News.
Speaker 2 A panel of three federal judges says North Carolina may use its redrawn congressional map. The redistricting is aimed at flipping a House seat currently held by Democratic Congressman Don Davis.
Speaker 2 He's African-American and represents the first district, which covers more than 20 counties. That district has been represented by black members of Congress for more than 30 years.
Speaker 2 This is Thanksgiving, which means tomorrow is Black Friday when holiday shoppers spend a lot of money in stores and online. NPR Zelina Seljuk has more.
Speaker 5 Adobe Analytics, which tracks online transactions, says steepest online sales on electronics, clothes, and computers are expected on Cyber Monday, while Black Friday may have the better deals on televisions, toys, and appliances.
Speaker 5 The National Retail Federation forecasts that sales this holiday season will top $1 trillion for the first time.
Speaker 5 Much of the spending comes from wealthier shoppers, while others are trying to tighten budgets. In fact, lower-cost stores like Walmart and TJ Maxx say they're seeing more higher-income visitors.
Speaker 5 But people are also choosing to trade up, deciding that a better deal on something costly is to get the fancier version.
Speaker 5 Both Home Depot and Best Buy say that when they do sell big ticket items, a growing share of them are the most expensive option. Alina Seluk, NPR News.
Speaker 2 Thanksgiving Day travel could be difficult for a lot of people in the northern U.S.
Speaker 2 The National Weather Service has posted winter weather advisories and winter storm watches and warnings from Idaho to upstate New York. There's no trading today on Wall Street because of the holiday.
Speaker 2 I'm Dave Mattingly, NPR News in Washington.
