Speaker 2 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Rahm. The House and Senate Armed Services Committees are looking into deadly military strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean.

Speaker 2 NPR's Luke Garrett reports this comes after reports that the Pentagon targeted survivors.

Speaker 3 Committee leaders referenced a Washington Post report that a follow-up strike on survivors of an initial strike was conducted in keeping with Defense Secretary Pete Hex's order to kill everyone on the boats.

Speaker 3 NPR also confirmed this reporting. The Pentagon denied it.
Senator Mark Kelly, an Arizona Democrat who sits on the committee, told CNN an investigation is needed.

Speaker 2 Going after survivors in the water.

Speaker 5 That is clearly not lawful.

Speaker 3 Fellow committee member Senator Mark Wayne Mullen, a Republican from Oklahoma, denied the reporting, but said on CNN, These individuals don't care about the lives of our friends and families.

Speaker 4 Why do we care if we take them out in international water?

Speaker 3 The inquiries mark a rare case of oversight from the GOP-led Congress. Luke Garrett, NPR News, Washington.

Speaker 2 President Trump's second term has had a frenetic pace, and not just when it comes to policy. As NPR's Tamara Keith reports, Trump's remodeling spree continues.

Speaker 6 There's the Rose Garden, now now more of a patio, the oval office, gilded from floor to ceiling, Trump's planned $300 billion ballroom, and now Trump has his sights set on the golf courses at Joint Base Andrews outside of Washington, D.C.

Speaker 6 Trump said he would be working with legendary golfer Jack Nicholas shortly before the two went on an aerial tour of the site.

Speaker 7 So we'll fix that up. Jack will be the architect and he'll design it.
Two existing courses that are in very bad shape, so we can, for very little money, fix it up for the Air Force base.

Speaker 6 Trump normally golfs at his own courses, and it's not clear whether that would change once the on-base greens get an upgrade. Tamara Keith, NPR News.

Speaker 2 Pope Leo is now in Lebanon, where he challenged its political class to set aside differences and strive for a common good of reconciliation and peace. NPR's Ruth Sherlock reports from Beirut.

Speaker 9 Pope Leo made his remarks at a welcoming ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Beirut.

Speaker 9 Lebanon has suffered in recent years from conflict with Israel, an economic collapse, and the explosion of chemicals at Beirut port in 2020 that devastated the capital.

Speaker 9 Lebanon's political class has been accused of vast corruption. To this day, no single senior Lebanese official has been convicted over the port explosion.

Speaker 9 Standing beside Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Pope Leo said Lebanese leaders must seek truth for, quote, those who have suffered wrongs and injustice.

Speaker 9 He said reconciliation must come from the top, with leaders setting aside their interests and recognizing, quote, the common good as superior to the particular. Ruth Sherlock and Pion Yuz, Beirut.

Speaker 2 Ukrainian negotiators met in Florida today with U.S. officials on ending Russia's war in Ukraine.
Ukrainian and European leaders say an initial plan proposed by the U.S. was too favorable to Russia.

Speaker 2 After the meeting, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it was productive, but work remains in the search for an agreement. U.S.
Envoy Steve Witkoff also took part in the talks.

Speaker 2 He's scheduled to go to Moscow this week to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Speaker 2 A comet called 3E Atlas is on its way out of our solar system after passing through and causing a lot of interest. NPR's Katia-Riddle reports.

Speaker 8 Comet 3E Atlas is only the third object we've seen come in from outside our solar system.

Speaker 8 It was spotted thanks to more powerful telescopes, but it became famous thanks to much speculation that the comet could contain alien life.

Speaker 8 At a press conference, NASA Administrator Ahmed Shathria dispelled such rumors, but he said he's glad so many people have been interested in this topic.

Speaker 5 It expanded people's brains to think about how magical the universe could be. And I'll tell you, here at NASA, we think that every day.
And so it's really great.

Speaker 8 Shathriya underscored that those at NASA do very much want to find find signs of life in the universe and will continue working toward that goal. Katie Riddle in PR News.

Speaker 2 This is one of the busiest travel days of the year with Americans heading home after the Thanksgiving holiday. Snow is complicating travel in the Midwest.

Speaker 2 More than a foot of snow has fallen in some areas. Airports in the region report some flight delays, including O'Hare in Chicago, one of the busiest airports in the country.
