Speaker 1 Bravo's 90210 Housewives are back.

Speaker 3 Hello, everyone. Buy it.

Speaker 2 Buy it. This is so Beverly Hills.
And it's gonna be.

Speaker 4 When I saw him kissing that other woman, I don't know him.

Speaker 2 A tinsel town.

Speaker 6 Oh, my God, am I overdressed?

Speaker 2 Showdown.

Speaker 6 People say you can't have it all, and I do. Something's off with this girl.

Speaker 5 I can still go to the dark side. Don't get it twisted.

Speaker 7 I'm not looking for troubles, but if she goes there, I will meet her there.

Speaker 1 The Real Housewives at Beverly Hills, new season, December 4th.

Speaker 2 I'm Bravo and Peacock.

Speaker 9 The things I learned while we were filming this shocked me to my core.

Speaker 1 From the New York Times best-selling author of Bad Mormon, a memoir, comes a new three-part limited docuseries.

Speaker 10 The real secret lives are much darker, deeper, and more tragic.

Speaker 14 My earliest memories are of abuse.

Speaker 16 Had they taken action, could it have saved me?

Speaker 15 I just feel overwhelmed and horrified.

Speaker 1 Surviving Mormonism with Heather Gay. Watch all episodes now on Peacock.

Speaker 14 Enjoy.

Speaker 14 He was looking for a fresh start in a new town.

Speaker 19 I watched him blossom into a guy that felt like he had found something he needed.

Speaker 18 He had an impact on a lot of people.

Speaker 14 But a horrifying crime would destroy his future and baffle police.

Speaker 21 They found him in the bedroom with a knife stuck in the side of his head.

Speaker 16 It appeared that the body had been intentionally set on fire.

Speaker 24 I have never seen a case like this in my career. When we found out a second person was dead, this turned into a big story.

Speaker 14 As the body count rises, detectives face a race against the clock to unmask a dangerous killer.

Speaker 23 It It was imperative that we find him

Speaker 14 and extinguish a deadly combination of passion and desperation.

Speaker 28 She just seemed like she cared enough.

Speaker 30 No matter what I did, you know, she wasn't going to let that come between her.

Speaker 32 We had a relationship with him, a sexual relationship with him.

Speaker 27 I'm sure you all talked more than you're saying.

Speaker 12 People who are that cold and non-caring just unnerved you.

Speaker 24 How could these people be so evil that they would take advantage of two people who were willing to give everything they could to help someone?

Speaker 14 Louisville, Kentucky is known for the glitz and glamour of the famed Kentucky Derby.

Speaker 24 Churchill Downs is home to the biggest, to the most exciting, and to the most well-known horse race in the world.

Speaker 24 The area around Churchill Downs is the Old Louisville area.

Speaker 37 It is a pretty vibrant community.

Speaker 14 On March 24th, 2006,

Speaker 14 a concerned member of the community calls authorities to report a house fire on Harlan Avenue.

Speaker 39 It was about midnight. I seen flashing lights outside the window.

Speaker 39 And then I looked at the house next door, and there was smoke rolling out of the top of the door.

Speaker 39 About that time, the fire engines came and they told me that I had to leave the house. So I went across the street and watched the flames look towards my house.

Speaker 39 That was enormous. I was praying to God that my house was not going to catch on fire.

Speaker 41 It seemed like the house burnt forever.

Speaker 14 After nearly 45 minutes, the flames are suppressed and arson investigators move in to determine the source of the blaze.

Speaker 44 The Louisville Fire Department and arson investigators subsequently located a deceased subject within the house.

Speaker 47 They call us.

Speaker 35 We go in there, do our scene investigation, crime scene unicops, and this is their investigation.

Speaker 16 We entered into the kitchen.

Speaker 15 There was significant smoke and fire damage to the house.

Speaker 46 We were directed to the bedroom.

Speaker 13 As soon as we walked in, you could see the victim was laying face up on the bed.

Speaker 37 Although you couldn't determine facial features, a lot of charring to the body.

Speaker 16 and subsequently saw a knife handle that was still embedded in the face of the victim.

Speaker 33 It's one that sticks with me.

Speaker 47 It takes a lot to put a knife into somebody's head.

Speaker 25 I had never seen a case like this in my career.

Speaker 33 You're the voice for the person who is laying there dead, and you've got to recreate all the events that led up to it.

Speaker 51 It was very obvious that there was foul play involved.

Speaker 46 Judging from the handle of the knife that was in the face, it looked like your standard kitchen knife, not something like a hunting knife or a pocket knife.

Speaker 46 It was assumed by us that the knife was taken from the victim's kitchen.

Speaker 52 It didn't fit the MO of

Speaker 52 a breaking and entering or a robbery.

Speaker 54 It was a very brutal attack, very violent, a very emotionally charged attack.

Speaker 43 Crimes of passion tend to be in an overkill manner.

Speaker 15 This appeared to be exactly that.

Speaker 54 So my initial thoughts were this was somebody that the victim knew or had a relationship with romantically or otherwise.

Speaker 14 Based on the extensive damage around the victim, arson investigators believe they know where the fire originated.

Speaker 36 It appeared that the fire had started in the bedroom based on some of the things that we had seen about the bed.

Speaker 27 Burnt sheets, comforter, papers from books that had been torn out.

Speaker 8 It wasn't just that they were trying to burn the body.

Speaker 13 They were trying to burn the whole house to conceal any and all evidence.

Speaker 13 After discovering the body and doing the initial investigation within the bedroom, we kind of make our way out and try to identify the victim.

Speaker 55 We look for mail, we look for pictures, we look for anything that might have a name associated with the address.

Speaker 16 We didn't see a lot, we didn't have anything that identified who the victim was.

Speaker 34 Then we start interviewing whoever's around, who showed up at the scene.

Speaker 23 As I walked out of the house, I looked over and saw somebody that I recognized named Daryl Benzel.

Speaker 55 Daryl was a friend of my brother and my dad.

Speaker 59 I saw Lee, and we looked at each other and like, wow, what's this about?

Speaker 45 I greeted Daryl, you know, hi, Daryl, what are you doing here?

Speaker 59 I said, well, that's my house. She's like, oh, my goodness.

Speaker 14 Daryl tells detectives that he had just received a frantic call from a neighbor.

Speaker 1 Bonita, who lived next door, let me know that our house was on fire.

Speaker 59 That's all she could tell us, that the house was on fire and the fire department was there.

Speaker 59 So I got there as fast as I could all the time thinking, what happened?

Speaker 46 He had asked me at that point if there was anybody inside.

Speaker 54 I advised him that there was.

Speaker 61 I asked him if he knew who it was.

Speaker 23 He said, well, yes, it's my tenant and it's Eddie Poyner.

Speaker 43 and at that point

Speaker 51 i kind of took a step back and

Speaker 54 my shoulders just kind of dropped and

Speaker 20 i know that name uh

Speaker 42 wow

Speaker 27 and it's the first

Speaker 40 well it's the first and only homicide i ever had where i'd actually met the victim

Speaker 14 Born in the Bible Belt community of Edmonton, Kentucky, Eddie Poynter had moved to Louisville in the late 90s.

Speaker 12 He came from a small town,

Speaker 34 Kentucky.

Speaker 49 Eddie was gay and probably didn't have a lot of, I guess, outlets for the gay community.

Speaker 40 People outgrow their small town and they want to see a bigger city and socialize with people like themselves and where they can feel comfortable and accepted.

Speaker 55 And I think Louisville was that for Eddie.

Speaker 9 Louisville is a very diverse city.

Speaker 24 People can love who they want here and a lot of folks make it their home because of that.

Speaker 14 In Louisville, Eddie quickly found a community where he felt accepted.

Speaker 42 I didn't know Eddie well, but my brother knew him.

Speaker 44 I had met him while having lunch with my brother one day and he was a waiter

Speaker 15 here in town.

Speaker 46 My brother and I were dining there and I just remember there was a bright smile on both of their faces and a very compassionate, welcoming greeting to one another.

Speaker 40 I remember my brother saying, Eddie's going through a tough time right now.

Speaker 42 Eddie had a problem with alcohol.

Speaker 61 He had battled that for some time.

Speaker 9 Eddie did seek a program of recovery and had met a lot of people

Speaker 18 and had an impact on a lot of people.

Speaker 19 It was fun and funny, but he was serious too. He had a serious side.
He believed in being in recovery and doing the best he could.

Speaker 19 I watched him blossom into a guy that felt like he had found something he needed.

Speaker 57 I just loved him to death.

Speaker 14 Eddie was trying to turn his life around when he met Daryl Benzel, who offered him a place to live on historic Harlan Avenue.

Speaker 59 Eddie was several months sober needing a place to stay. And he was a good tenant.

Speaker 47 He really was.

Speaker 39 Eddie was a real nice guy. He was friendly and cordial with me at all times.

Speaker 14 But just eight months after moving into his new house, the life Eddie had worked so hard to build in Louisville has gone up in flames. And detectives are searching for clues as to what happened.

Speaker 42 I always worked my hardest on these cases, but there was never really a personal attachment to these victims until this case.

Speaker 45 I just had a different connection.

Speaker 14 Despite the damage caused by the fire, detectives recover one clue from the ashes.

Speaker 9 One of the fire arson investigators said, hey, we uncovered this notebook.

Speaker 46 There's a name Jennifer Smith in it.

Speaker 37 If we could identify a Jennifer Smith that might have had some sort of tie to this residence, it was worth investigating.

Speaker 22 The likelihood of tracking down every Jennifer Smith in the city of Lillo was a big task.

Speaker 16 It could have just been a girl that had been visiting, that was doodling her name when she visited and had nothing to do with this.

Speaker 22 Everything that could have caused a problem for me in the beginning stages of any investigation was there.

Speaker 46 We have no fingerprints. We have very limited, if any, evidence at the scene because of the fire.
And we have a crime of complete rage.

Speaker 46 It was a little bit overwhelming to think that it would be solved.

Speaker 22 Where do we start?

Speaker 14 Coming up, detectives search for clues among Eddie's inner circle.

Speaker 24 We heard that they had had a relationship at one point.

Speaker 9 There was about a 30-year age difference between the two of them.

Speaker 14 And the case has turned upside down when detectives discover Eddie's murder may be connected to a larger crime spree, one with a rising body count.

Speaker 25 She called us and said she's ready to talk and clear things up for herself.

Speaker 48 She says she may know where another body is.

Speaker 14 In Louisville, Kentucky, homicide detectives are investigating the stabbing death of 43-year-old Eddie Poynter.

Speaker 14 To learn more about Eddie and those closest to him, detectives must break the news of his death to his mother.

Speaker 61 When you make a notification on somebody's death, I mean, it's the absolute hardest thing you do in your career, and it never, ever gets easier.

Speaker 64 It's heartbreaking.

Speaker 9 She said they had a very close relationship.

Speaker 8 She was heartbroken to hear that her son had died and even more so that he had died in this manner.

Speaker 14 Eddie's mother can't think of anyone who would want to harm her son.

Speaker 14 When detectives begin speaking to Eddie's friends, they say the same.

Speaker 9 He had a good network of friends both in the community of recovery as well as the gay community who were very close-knit.

Speaker 19 I was devastated.

Speaker 39 I just couldn't figure out how they could

Speaker 60 kill this sweet friend of mine.

Speaker 14 Hoping for answers, detectives request for an autopsy to be done right away.

Speaker 22 The autopsy revealed that there were multiple stab wounds to the face as well as the torso, an excessive amount, probably in the dozens.

Speaker 35 He had numerous defensive wounds on his hands, and they were fighting fighting for their life.

Speaker 12 They were trying to stop what was coming at him.

Speaker 22 It appeared that the body had been intentionally set on fire due to the nature of the severe burns and the char marks that concealed his identity.

Speaker 9 It's almost like someone wanted to erase any trace of Eddie physically and emotionally.

Speaker 24 I remember coming in that day and our assignment desk, sending myself and a photographer out to the home.

Speaker 66 Fire crews found 43-year-old Eddie Poynter inside his burning home on Harlan Street early Friday morning. Poynter's possessions charred and on his front lawn.

Speaker 67 Did I never felt like it was an unsafe neighborhood?

Speaker 37 The news of Eddie's death was circulating, so a lot of people were learning about it.

Speaker 46 People would call the office and offer to give information because they cared about Eddie.

Speaker 37 And one of his best friends actually reached out to us when he heard about Eddie's death and that was a man named Gary Perry.

Speaker 8 It was a great phone call to get because he's going to be the person that probably knows Eddie more than anybody does.

Speaker 42 Gary indicated that Eddie predominantly hung out either in AA meeting groups or at a little small hole-in-the-wall bar called Teddy Bears that's in the heart of old Louisville.

Speaker 33 He was sober, but he was always there and drinking, just coaxing stuff, because that's where his friends were.

Speaker 8 What I want to know is did he have any romantic relationships who were his closest friends?

Speaker 20 Gary really indicated that he didn't have any romantic relationships that he was aware of.

Speaker 27 He had very close friends

Speaker 42 and one of his best friends and he used to live with this older gentleman and his name was Blaine Thacker.

Speaker 9 There was about a 30-year age difference between the two of them.

Speaker 8 They were both in the restaurant industry and they were both part of the gay community and they just fell into a very deep friendship.

Speaker 24 Eddie and Blaine were seen together all the time. We heard that they had had a relationship at one point possibly, but they were just friends more recently.

Speaker 14 Armed with the knowledge that Blaine was close with Eddie, detectives must speak with him to rule out any involvement.

Speaker 8 Gary said, you know, Blaine would be the one person that probably knew Eddie the best.

Speaker 42 He had just moved into an apartment down in Old Louisville on Ormsby.

Speaker 46 It was called the Mayflower Apartments.

Speaker 46 He did not have a current phone number for Blaine, and he was going to work on that for us to reach out to Blaine to contact him to see if he could be any help in this investigation as well.

Speaker 14 Gary does know Blaine's current place of employment, so detectives decide to start there.

Speaker 57 Blaine was the cook at Masterson's, which is a family-owned restaurant and catering company here in Louisville.

Speaker 61 Blaine was just kind of a character.

Speaker 8 He would be yelling at someone one minute and hugging them the next.

Speaker 67 Blaine was a great guy.

Speaker 61 He had a very, very kind heart and a strong work ethic.

Speaker 51 He was just a rock. He was always there.
He was very dependable.

Speaker 67 He always took the morning shift, which was great because it's hard to find people to come in at four o'clock in the morning.

Speaker 8 And he always showed up.

Speaker 40 But Blaine didn't show up one day.

Speaker 67 We kind of thought, well, anybody can misread his schedule. And then the next day, when he didn't show up and nobody heard from him, we knew that something, you know, was not right.

Speaker 24 Eddie and Blaine were seen together all the time.

Speaker 24 Eddie is stabbed to death in his home, the home set on fire, and Blaine is nowhere to be found.

Speaker 45 So, does Blaine have anything to do with this?

Speaker 16 Once we learned that he hadn't been to work in two days, it was concerning for us.

Speaker 23 It was imperative that we find him.

Speaker 11 Friday on NBC. To succeed in the world of junior college cheer, you need to be an elite athlete.

Speaker 4 I have put together the most disciplined teams to ever take the math.

Speaker 15 Oh, this is not them.

Speaker 11 This squad might have some challenges. I'm a 17th year sophomore, but I am in shape of my life.
But they've also got spirit.

Speaker 34 My goal this season?

Speaker 14 To be the first man that throws a cheerleader onto the moat.

Speaker 48 Yes, they do.

Speaker 11 Don't miss the new comedy stumble after Happy's place, Friday on NBC.

Speaker 11 Monday and Tuesday on NBC, four superstars back on the voice, including the one and only Snoop Dogg.

Speaker 47 My ears are anxious to hear and feel what they have to bring.

Speaker 11 Two-time winning coaches, Michael Buble and Niall Horan.

Speaker 6 Oh, it's good to be back.

Speaker 53 This is my dream come true.

Speaker 11 And the queen herself, Reba McIntyre.

Speaker 5 I get to tell them what to do, like a big sister.

Speaker 12 Whose team are you on?

Speaker 27 Now the party can start.

Speaker 26 Me home.

Speaker 11 The voice, Monday and Tuesday on NBC.

Speaker 14 In Louisville, Kentucky, detectives investigating the murder of 43-year-old Eddie Poynter are hoping to speak to his best friend, Blaine Thacker.

Speaker 14 But before detectives can locate Blaine, they receive word that a possible witness has arrived at Eddie's home.

Speaker 22 Another detective was out there doing a neighborhood canvas.

Speaker 46 There was a car that pulled up to the crime scene tape, and he said, I'm trying to go to this house on Harlan Avenue. He said, my friend is in there.
Well, who's your friend?

Speaker 38 And he said, it's Dale Moneypenny.

Speaker 46 It was at that point that he wanted to know if we had identified Dale Moneypenny as the victim in the house.

Speaker 15 This was a bombshell.

Speaker 46 We knew Dale Moneypenny was not the victim in this case.

Speaker 14 According to the witness, he had gone to the Harlan Avenue home the day before the fire to see his friend Dale.

Speaker 9 Dale's friend said Dale Moneypenny was there covered in blood and there was a girl in there and she had blood on her clothes.

Speaker 8 He kind of got freaked out and left and then saw the crime scene tape up, piqued his interest, and he went back over there to find out that the house had been burned.

Speaker 22 It was a huge break in this investigation because not only did he give us the name, he put him at the crime scene with a female.

Speaker 51 Both of them had blood on their clothing within hours of the fire being set.

Speaker 14 The witness doesn't know Eddie Poynter, but he claims that Dale had been living in the house for two days.

Speaker 10 He didn't know this girl, but Dale, she was unfamiliar to him, but he was able to give us a description.

Speaker 28 Who the hell were those two people staying with me?

Speaker 33 That's what we needed to figure out.

Speaker 14 Detectives prioritize this new lead and put a hold on tracking down Blaine Thacker.

Speaker 45 It's very unusual to get the name of a suspect within 24 hours of your investigation.

Speaker 52 So going from a place of where do we begin to we may have a suspect was unexpected and exciting.

Speaker 51 All we needed to do was a little bit of research and search was on.

Speaker 58 We were able to locate criminal records.

Speaker 50 We knew very little about Dale Moneypenny other than a general description of him as a white male, blonde hair, blue eyes, originating from Ashland, Kentucky, which is far eastern Kentucky.

Speaker 37 We did have a knowledge that he was driving a black Honda and we got the plate.

Speaker 22 So we put out

Speaker 20 a bolo, which is a be on the lookout for this plate and this vehicle.

Speaker 57 If you see it, call the police.

Speaker 13 At that point, we just took the name Dale Moneypenny and did a search through our arrest records and found that Dale had spent some time in prison and had a fairly lengthy criminal history for a young male in his 20s.

Speaker 50 Dale liked to assault people.

Speaker 57 He liked to steal things.

Speaker 46 I believe there was an escape charge at one point and some drug use in his history.

Speaker 14 Determined to locate Dale and learn more about his connection to Eddie, detectives begin reaching out to his relatives.

Speaker 14 While no one has seen Dale, family members tell police they're not surprised to hear from them.

Speaker 29 Dale always had his little fair share of trouble, you know, not wanting to listen and, you know, just doing his own thing.

Speaker 29 So it's not Dale's first rodeo.

Speaker 14 According to Dale's family, his downward spiral into a life of crime developed after the tragic murder of his mother when he was just a teenager.

Speaker 29 When my aunt Karen died, it was, it hit everybody pretty hard, but it hit Dale especially hard because that was...

Speaker 29 The only family he really had for himself. Like,

Speaker 29 he was on his own. He had nowhere else to go.

Speaker 29 Joe was already way into partying at that age.

Speaker 53 And, you know, he was a ladies fan.

Speaker 29 He knew how to talk to people.

Speaker 65 He knew how to get what he wanted.

Speaker 34 And he fed off of that.

Speaker 29 You know, he'd feed into your needs to get to his needs.

Speaker 30 He grew up in a drug world, no alcohol, and all that, you know.

Speaker 65 But...

Speaker 29 It takes a toll on a person after a while.

Speaker 65 He had a temper.

Speaker 29 And you add drugs and alcohol with that.

Speaker 65 That's a bomb waiting to go off.

Speaker 14 Following a stint in prison in 2000, family members say Dale left home for good.

Speaker 29 I knew Dale had took off to Louisville, Kentucky, and he ended up with this girl out there.

Speaker 14 Detectives have a theory for who Dale's girlfriend may be.

Speaker 62 We knew one name at that point, Jennifer Smith.

Speaker 14 Detectives release Dale's mugshot and ask the public for help identifying Jennifer Smith.

Speaker 14 Shortly after, they get a call from the mother of a Jennifer Smith in southern Indiana.

Speaker 61 We went to her house.

Speaker 8 She said she hadn't seen Jennifer, but she knew that we were looking for her because she had seen the news.

Speaker 7 Jennifer's a young 20-something, had had been going to college.

Speaker 15 She didn't really have a residence that she lived at.

Speaker 22 She would, you know, kind of hop from place to place.

Speaker 14 Jennifer's mother confirms that her daughter has been dating Dale Moneypenny for two weeks.

Speaker 8 Jennifer's mom did see her with Dale and saw that she had a very strong attachment to this guy.

Speaker 33 She didn't really like him and trust him.

Speaker 34 She made him get out of the house because he was there trying to manipulate, take money, and do stuff that way.

Speaker 33 And so Jennifer just went and stayed with him.

Speaker 14 Jennifer's mother believes that her daughter's life is in danger.

Speaker 12 She was scared for her daughter because the way Money Benny was manipulating and preying on Jennifer.

Speaker 54 I know she cared about her daughter.

Speaker 42 She wanted her back home.

Speaker 14 With no clear indication where Jennifer and Dale are now, detectives fear they may have skipped town.

Speaker 14 But just a few hours after speaking with Jennifer's mom, police get another call.

Speaker 28 A short time later, she called us and said Jennifer's back and she's ready to talk to you guys and clear things up for herself.

Speaker 35 We picked up Jennifer and something was eating at her.

Speaker 34 Something was bothering her.

Speaker 10 It wasn't until we pressed her for a little bit more that she came clean.

Speaker 14 Jennifer admits that her boyfriend, Dale Moneypenny, is responsible for Eddie Poynter's death. But Eddie is not the only victim.

Speaker 48 She says she may know where another body is.

Speaker 51 She drops a bomb.

Speaker 13 She tells us that she didn't know that Dale was going to kill the other guy.

Speaker 46 And I said, what other guy?

Speaker 13 She said, the guy that lived in the Mayflower apartments.

Speaker 56 Immediately I said, it's Blaine Thacker.

Speaker 14 Less than 48 hours after Eddie Poynter was found stabbed to death inside his burned-out home, 23-year-old Jennifer Smith has revealed that her boyfriend, Dale Moneypenny, killed Eddie's friend, Blaine Thacker.

Speaker 14 While Jennifer is taken to the station to await further questioning, detectives race to Blaine's apartment.

Speaker 48 Detective Siebel and I went to the building and met with the management there, and they led us into the apartment.

Speaker 48 We walked in and his feet were sticking out, covered up in blankets.

Speaker 27 Blaine had multiple stab wounds to his chest and torso area as a result of a knife, a kitchen knife.

Speaker 43 There was no fire at Blaine Thacker's house, although there were signs that there had been things that had been knocked over and appeared to have been removed from the home.

Speaker 14 After processing the scene, detectives returned to the station and pressed Jennifer for answers.

Speaker 35 We read her rights and then we just started having a conversation with her.

Speaker 11 You just basically built rapport with them.

Speaker 48 You try to get them to trust you.

Speaker 31 What we need right now, okay, is you to tell us everything.

Speaker 31 Be honest with us. Tell us the truth because here's the deal, okay? We want to hear your side and it can help you because

Speaker 31 you were there and you know what took place, okay?

Speaker 36 Yeah.

Speaker 3 Okay.

Speaker 43 I thought she was a young, meek,

Speaker 50 very mild-mannered, lost young lady.

Speaker 14 Jennifer tells detectives that she didn't know Dale was violent when she first met him.

Speaker 8 Dale Moneypenny and Jennifer Smith had really only known each other for about 10 days.

Speaker 22 She stated she had met Dale through some friends that were in the party scene, and she was attracted to him immediately.

Speaker 21 Very infatuated.

Speaker 12 Basically, puppy love.

Speaker 69 You know, you're partying with people and they're your best friends. And two weeks is an eternity.

Speaker 36 You met this guy and you're in love with him, and I know you have a lot of strong feelings for him.

Speaker 3 Dude.

Speaker 24 He was blonde with blue eyes. He carried himself well.
He was very charismatic. He seemed to say the right thing at the right time.

Speaker 29 When you first meet Dale, you're going to get a side of Dale you think is just a very good person.

Speaker 29 Dale was fun to be around at times. He knew how to get Jennifer.

Speaker 7 They kind of began to just kind of run around together for a period of seven days, staying from one place to another without separating from another.

Speaker 34 They technically were homeless.

Speaker 33 Jennifer's mom booted them out.

Speaker 46 Her mom just wasn't willing to accept the lifestyle that she was living at the time with Dale.

Speaker 14 According to Jennifer, while grabbing a drink at Teddy Bear's bar,

Speaker 14 the couch surfing couple had the good fortune of meeting Eddie Pointer.

Speaker 62 How do you know Eddie?

Speaker 17 I met him as Ed.

Speaker 44 Hazed?

Speaker 69 Okay.

Speaker 70 And how long ago did you meet him?

Speaker 71 I met him

Speaker 14 Wednesday for two weeks.

Speaker 32 I was sober.

Speaker 44 He hit it off with them,

Speaker 10 offered them a place to stay, felt bad for them because they didn't really have a permanent place to stay.

Speaker 13 And Eddie was kind to them.

Speaker 24 He was just a good guy and he wanted to help people. He had also had a rough time in life and had been down on his luck.

Speaker 37 In his recovery, he sought to help other people.

Speaker 29 Eddie took a big chance by inviting him into his home. Eddie didn't know what he was in for.
You know, Eddie didn't know who Dale really was.

Speaker 70 How did Dale and Eddie get along?

Speaker 24 I sounded like they got along right.

Speaker 69 Okay.

Speaker 14 Jennifer says that only a couple of nights into their stay on the night of march 23rd it was clear they had overstayed their welcome her story was that she and dale were having sex in eddie's bed and eddie walked in we was in his bedroom was he upset because you all were having sex in his bed

Speaker 14 Jennifer claims that she left the room to avoid confrontation. But Dale grew enraged at Eddie's treatment of his girlfriend.

Speaker 7 Jennifer said at that point he grabbed a knife from the kitchen.

Speaker 8 Dale went in and approached Eddie and an argument ensued at which time he came out a few minutes later and he was covered in blood

Speaker 7 and he said we got to get out of here.

Speaker 71 I said oh God, oh god, oh god, what are you doing?

Speaker 69 Don't tell me you didn't

Speaker 3 What about the fire?

Speaker 72 If you went and grabbed something for him, gave him some matches, whatever, that's just part of it.

Speaker 3 You gave him a lot.

Speaker 23 She said Dale set fire to the house

Speaker 15 and they then got whatever they could that belonged to them and they left and they walked about 45 minutes to the apartment belonging to Blaine Thacker.

Speaker 14 According to Jennifer, she and Dale didn't really know Blaine that well, having met him through Eddie only once.

Speaker 5 Did y'all at any point talk about what happened with Eddie to this guy?

Speaker 36 No.

Speaker 24 They told Blaine that, oh, they needed a place to spend the night, never letting him know what had just happened.

Speaker 43 Blaine allowed them into his apartment because he knew them as having stayed with Eddie and told them that they were welcome to stay there for the night if they needed a place and to help themselves.

Speaker 68 to something to eat if they needed to and that he was going to be going to bed.

Speaker 14 According to Jennifer, she fell asleep on the couch,

Speaker 14 but at 4.30 a.m., she awoke to a horrifying sight.

Speaker 32 No, Emma had blood all over his face, all over her face.

Speaker 37 She heard Dale come out from Blaine's bedroom, again covered in blood, and him stating, we need to get out of here.

Speaker 48 This time they just throw blankets on top of him.

Speaker 22 According to Jennifer, she did not know Dale was going to kill Blaine.

Speaker 62 Did he say at any point why he killed this other guy?

Speaker 62 Not.

Speaker 32 Did you ask him at all and he just avoided it? Yeah, just avoided it.

Speaker 22 Well, the picture is that Dale is on a violent rampage and she's just there going along and it just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

Speaker 35 She tried to separate herself from it as much as she could.

Speaker 15 It didn't seem feasible that a person that was completely innocent would not try to get help or separate herself from somebody who's seemingly in a killing spree.

Speaker 41 So it was time to kind of call her out on it.

Speaker 70 I know when you love somebody, you'll do anything you can to try and help them, but now's the time to be as honest as you can, okay?

Speaker 69 Okay, I know.

Speaker 70 At some point, he started to tell you to look for money. Yeah.

Speaker 71 Did he find any money?

Speaker 69 None at all.

Speaker 60 any credit cards or anything like that i don't think so okay

Speaker 70 didn't leave with anything uh sinceadiest

Speaker 71 i think a rodeo and a money tv

Speaker 14 jennifer claims that she and dale drove to indiana and stayed with a friend before dale decided to flee the state He said, I'll get back in contact with you, so I think with him saying that, she felt reassured that they would be together once again

Speaker 14 following her confession detectives charged Jennifer with two counts of murder one count of robbery two counts of arson and tampering with physical evidence they next set their sights on locating Dale

Speaker 70 has he called you a lot or just maybe once how many times has he called you once just one time what did he say when he called you they just asked me for a jury

Speaker 69 okay

Speaker 7 did he say where he was?

Speaker 69 He said his name was Joe.

Speaker 22 Only thing she knew was that he had said that he had always wanted to go to Miami and that he was probably on his way to Florida.

Speaker 13 So we contacted Miami-Dade County.

Speaker 68 We had a grand jury indictment of Dale Moneypenny and a felony warrant for his arrest.

Speaker 8 So should Dale be stopped, they would be alerted no matter where he was located in the United States that he was wanted for two counts of murder and arson here in Louisville.

Speaker 35 You know, you had to get him off the street, you know, because if you got no remorse for the two decides already committed, why wouldn't he kill others?

Speaker 46 And it was very high pressure.

Speaker 9 The stakes were very high.

Speaker 13 Dale wasn't going to stop, and I think it was concerning for anybody that encountered him on his path.

Speaker 23 We're desperate to find him.

Speaker 14 Coming up, as the search for Dale Moneypenny intensifies, authorities fear he'll stop at nothing to stay a free man.

Speaker 29 There's no way to say he'd never do it again.

Speaker 57 the only way he knew how to survive was to steal and kill people

Speaker 66 in march 2006 jennifer smith and dale moneypenny have been implicated in the brutal murders of two beloved members of the louisville community residents are trying to make sense of two murders the first on harlan avenue home to 43 year old charles edward pointer who was the first to die last week the second, 73-year-old Blaine Thacker Jr., wasn't discovered until Jennifer Smith was arrested late Saturday night and started talking to police.

Speaker 24 When we found out, a second person was dead, not too far from Eddie's house.

Speaker 13 This turned into a big story, and a lot of people were upset.

Speaker 14 Jennifer Smith has confessed that her boyfriend, 26-year-old Dale Moneypenny, is responsible. And now Dale has been on the run for more than two weeks.

Speaker 22 We really didn't know where Dale was going.

Speaker 43 He could have been lying to Jennifer.

Speaker 46 He could have been going, you know, to Colorado for all we know, which is why we had him in our national database as a wanted felon.

Speaker 14 On April 16th, detectives received the news they have been waiting for.

Speaker 52 We got a hit.

Speaker 42 Sunny Isles Police Department, which is very close to Miami, called our office and said, we just arrested Dale Moneypenny.

Speaker 27 We understand you're you're looking for him.

Speaker 45 We said, yes, indeed.

Speaker 22 At the time that Dale was stopped, he was in a stolen vehicle, which was not a surprise.

Speaker 14 Detectives learned that on March 30th, Dale stopped at a bar in Daytona Beach and charmed a 75-year-old man into buying him a hotel room.

Speaker 48 It's the same thing he was doing. He's preying upon the gay male population.

Speaker 12 That's his way of doing it because he's able to manipulate people.

Speaker 14 When they walked into the hotel room, Dale pulled a knife on the man.

Speaker 53 Dale said, I don't know how to tell you this, but I'm going to kill you and take your money.

Speaker 20 And

Speaker 22 the man said, you can have it.

Speaker 37 You can have my wallet.

Speaker 7 You can have my keys.

Speaker 63 Just don't hurt me.

Speaker 61 Hotel managers had seen Dale go outside and they saw Dale trying to get into several different cars and ultimately leave in this man's car.

Speaker 46 They then went to the hotel room and checked on him and he was safe.

Speaker 33 The hotel called the police, and then

Speaker 48 the police found Dale, and they realized who he was.

Speaker 14 Detectives extradite Dale Moneypenny back to Louisville, where he agrees to talk.

Speaker 36 Dale was a fairly easy interview because he wanted to talk, and you didn't have to ask a lot from Dale.

Speaker 44 Dale wanted to talk, and he talked freely.

Speaker 72 You guys have to go see the bodies, huh?

Speaker 72 Yeah.

Speaker 3 Wasn't pretty. What?

Speaker 32 Wasn't pretty at all.

Speaker 32 I mean.

Speaker 68 How do you feel about it?

Speaker 3 It's

Speaker 72 the first thing in my mind when I go to sleep, first thing I wake up.

Speaker 30 So, I mean,

Speaker 72 I suffer for it every night because I just

Speaker 72 every night when I go to try to go to sleep,

Speaker 30 I keep seeing the

Speaker 65 last breath they took and then the way their body turned gray.

Speaker 14 Dale confirms Jennifer's story that Eddie Poynter had tried to kick them out of his house. And Dale admits he wasn't willing to comply with the request.

Speaker 29 If you've been around Dale long enough, you know his temper. Dale's never really been one to accept a word no.

Speaker 34 He don't want to be told no.

Speaker 10 He went into a rage at that point, and there was an argument that ensued and he grabbed a knife and attacked Eddie because he had lost control.

Speaker 31 I was hammering on whiskey. I don't remember what Eddie said to me that maybe snapped on the bedroom at first.

Speaker 30 They might have cussed Jennifer.

Speaker 51 After he killed Eddie, he knew he was in trouble and he had to cover his tracks.

Speaker 15 So he asked Jennifer to help him.

Speaker 22 They took a few belongings that they thought were valuable.

Speaker 27 It was a crime of opportunity because, you know, they were living for free.

Speaker 14 Dale says that after they set fire to Eddie's house, they headed for Blaine Thacker's.

Speaker 55 Blaine had opened the door for them, told them to help themselves to whatever food there was in the apartment.

Speaker 16 He went to bed.

Speaker 24 He had no idea that they had just murdered his best friend.

Speaker 14 Dale claims that he became increasingly paranoid that Blaine would realize what happened to Eddie.

Speaker 14 He eventually went into Blaine's bedroom and stabbed him multiple times.

Speaker 30 I guess I stole some stuff from him after it happened.

Speaker 13 Dale said he needed some of Blaine's valuables so that he could pawn them. to continue on his way out of town.

Speaker 3 If Mark can leave, I want to keep Jennifer with me, really.

Speaker 28 Why? She just seemed like

Speaker 30 she cared about no matter what I did, you know, she wanted to go there and come between it.

Speaker 28 You know, I was getting attached to this girl.

Speaker 46 Dale basically took the blame himself and admitted that he was responsible for both the death of Eddie Poynter and Blaine Thacker, and that Jennifer was pretty much just along for the rat.

Speaker 14 Following Dale's confession, he is charged with two counts of murder, as well as first-degree arson and robbery.

Speaker 24 Once Dale Moneypenny was informed that he was looking at possibly the death penalty, he decided to make a deal.

Speaker 33 He's in prison for life without parole.

Speaker 28 I think life without parole is wonderful because he still had many years to live.

Speaker 66 For 23-year-old Jennifer Lynn Smith, the introduction into the world of felony arrests is a harsh one.

Speaker 70 Says we've got two counts of murder, one count of robbery, one of two counts counts of arson, one of tamponing with physical evidence.

Speaker 14 On September 30th, 2008, Jennifer Smith pleads guilty to complicity to commit murder and arson

Speaker 14 and is sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Speaker 22 How could these two people be so evil?

Speaker 24 that they would take advantage of two people who were willing to give everything they could to help someone.

Speaker 48 This shows no remorse, no feelings.

Speaker 33 People who are that cold and non-caring

Speaker 32 just unhurt you have.

Speaker 32 They had no reason to die like that.

Speaker 32 Just because of Dale, you know, and Jennifer dealt with the cattle for the whole thing.

Speaker 29 I've always looked up to Dale, you know, and Dale's always been family.

Speaker 30 But

Speaker 29 dale had no remorse for what he did he's exactly where he needs to be because

Speaker 29 if he got out

Speaker 29 there's no way to say he'd never do it again

Speaker 22 i felt just such a deep sadness um that that blain was gone and to never see blaine again it just didn't seem real.

Speaker 49 I never got any kind of closure.

Speaker 19 Eddie was shy, but had an underlying sweetness about him. You could just see it deep down.

Speaker 56 You didn't have to really look for it.

Speaker 19 It was him.

Speaker 19 It was who he was.

Speaker 20 He had the best smile.

Speaker 19 He gave the best hugs. He meant something to me.
I'm sure he meant something to other people.

Speaker 60 And I'll miss him.

Speaker 64 Yeah.

Speaker 14 Jennifer Smith served five years in prison.

Speaker 5 She was released in 2011 at the age of 29.

Speaker 14 Dale Moneypenny is serving his life sentence in the Kentucky Department of Corrections.
