In 2018, 24-year-old Toyah Cordingley went for a walk with her dog on one of north Queensland's idyllic beaches. The next morning, her body was found buried in the sand.

Next week, her accused killer will stand trial before a jury in Cairns. The defendant, Rajwinder Singh, denies the charges.

Speaker 1 When you imagine North Queensland, you're probably thinking of long, isolated beaches, white sand and waves on one side and rainforest on the other. And that's exactly where this story starts.

Speaker 1 In 2018, Toya Cordingley was walking along one of those beaches with her dog, but when she didn't come home, her family started to worry.

Speaker 1 The following morning, her father found her body buried in the sand.

Speaker 2 An isolated piece of coastline between Cairns and Port Douglas has become a crime scene.

Speaker 1 Her murder rocked not just North Queensland, but the entire country. The 24-year-old became the latest of several women who'd been killed while walking alone.

Speaker 1 The Cairns community turned out to help police search for answers.

Speaker 2 They walked the length of Wongeti Beach, searching for clues in the murder of the 24-year-old pharmacy worker.

Speaker 1 While the search for her killer went on, a memorial for Toya was unveiled. Billboards and bumper stickers with her name encouraged people with information to come forward.

Speaker 1 Someone out there definitely knows who did this. Now the man accused of her murder is in court, Rajwinder Singh.
He denies he's responsible and has pleaded not guilty.

Speaker 1 It's up to a jury to hear the evidence and make their decision. In the case of Toya's murder, I'll be joined by ABC Far North reporter Chris Tester as we bring you updates from this trial.
