Welcome to Understand Tech and AI, the podcast that takes you back to basics to explain, explore, unpick and demystify the technology that's becoming part of our everyday lives.
I'm Spencer Kelly from BBC Click.
In each episode, I'm going to concentrate on just one thing and go back to basics to bring you up to speed.
Now, I've gathered together some brilliant experts.
They are great fun, they're really smart, and they are really, really good at breaking things down and explaining, for example, how the websites that you use are quietly learning about you, about what you like and about what you might like to see next.
I'm just going to give the really embarrassing example of the fact that I really like Pedro Pascal from The Last of Us.
It's not.
It's not too,
too embarrassing.
I love a bit of Pedro.
I may have searched for him on TikTok and then within minutes all I'm seeing is Pedro Pascal.
I'm loving this, by the way.
I'm loving it.
It's all Pedro from here on in.
We'll also strap on a pair of magic glasses and explain virtual reality.
We'll discuss whether you should start paying for things using new digital currencies.
And then we will deal with the biggest disruptor of the modern age, something that everyone is talking about.
Artificial intelligence.
What is it really?
What jobs will it really take over?
And are we all unwittingly teaching it to navigate our world?
Capture is a very good example.
It's a clever way of verifying that someone's not a bot, but also getting just a little bit of annotation done.
And you can imagine if you multiply that by millions of people, you actually now have really impressive data sets that you can train on.
And when it is pictures of roads or cars or traffic lights that we're being asked to identify, I wonder what type of artificial intelligence we might be training.
I can only hypothesise, but possibly something to do with roads and driving.
We'll also go back in time to look at the developments and ideas that got us to where we are today.
So, whether it's broadband, Bitcoin, or blockchain, whether it's AI, VR, or chat GPT,
we have the ABC on what it is.
