PRESENTS — The Case Of

Unknown length

It's the trial everyone in Darwin is talking about. In February 2022, a helicopter on a crocodile egg collection mission crashed in remote Arnhem Land, killing the egg collector and paralysing the pilot.

Now, croc wrangler Matt Wright is on trial: not for the crash, but for what he allegedly did after. Charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, prosecutors say he tried to interfere with the investigation, fearing he’d be blamed for the crash. Matt Wright has pleaded not guilty and denies all the allegations.

The Case Of is your eyes and ears inside the courtroom, as host Stephen Stockwell and reporter Olivana Lathouris bring you updates from the trial.

The Northern Territory is a place where men hang under helicopters collecting crocodile eggs.

And when things go wrong, they go very wrong.

Northern Territory police have confirmed a 38-year-old man has been killed and another injured in a helicopter crash in West Arnhem Land today.

In February 2022, Chris Willow Wilson died in that crash.

He was a colleague and a friend of NT crock wrangler Matt Wright.

And if the name Matt Wright sounds familiar, it's because he runs a big tourism operation in the top end and is the star of shows like Wild Crock Territory and Outback Wrangler.

He's a big deal in Darwin.

He was also one of the first people to reach the crash site.

Mr.

Wright wasn't on board the chopper when it crashed and denies any wrongdoing.

Now he's fighting charges over what police say say he did after the crash, an alleged cover-up, including attempts to convince witnesses to fabricate chopper records and destroy evidence.

But he denies all that and says he's not guilty.

Matt, how are you crying back to anybody?

Matt, is this the end of your business?

Go on home.
