Chapter 17:
Dining with the Devil.
Part two
of Three
Your part of me should be so lucky to be able to converse with such impartial minds.
How's that?
Well, for instance,
you have no idea that you're having lunch with the head of the Republic's government.
You?
That's right.
Chancellor Friedrich.
Oh, wait, so you're the president of the Republic?
Well, no.
That's General Kramer.
Not to give you a civics lesson of the Republic, but I run one of the branches.
Well, then what are you doing here on this train?
Why don't you just fly around wherever you want it?
You seem important enough.
Perceptive.
And yes, I could, but I had business that was best attended on the ground.
Besides, I'm not exactly the biggest fan of planes.
It's hard to trust a piece of antiquated tech made over a decade ago not to simply fall out of the sky.
Like many of them do.
Wait, really?
That that happens?
To my predecessor, in fact.
It's how I moved up into this job.
Yikes.
Well, maybe the planes were just not maintained properly.
There's nothing wrong with old tech as long as you use it right and you know what you're doing.
Is that so?
Um, look,
you'll have to excuse him.
You know, he used to be a mechanic, so he kind of takes that sort of thing personal.
Well, you take pride in your work.
Good for you.
Unique quality to have.
I hope you have decent employment lined up with us.
Where are you two headed?
Uh,
contract work, day labor in justice.
Ah, I'm traveling there too.
You'll love the city.
Plenty to do and see.
I consider it the true heart of the Republic.
But uh,
as day labor, really?
I don't mean any offense, but
you two don't seem the tie.
Well, I mean, that's that's all that was offered to us.
Hmm,
Jess.
You said you were a mechanic before.
Did you fix airplanes?
Well, mostly cars, but uh a little bit of everything, really.
I mean, access control points, uh, remote security, uh, organic scanning systems, life support modules, uh, biotech facil facilities,
kind of a jack of all trades.
Hmm.
Well, those are some hefty credentials.
Very unique qualifications.
Yeah,
he's a smart one.
You give him a book, and he'll quote it back to you, cover to cover.
Interesting.
And what about you, Chris?
Me.
Um, I ain't really nothing like him.
Was security detail on the border, but I got tired of risking my neck on the river.
I don't blame you.
Often short-lived line of work.
So you have first-hand experience with infected?
You could definitely say that.
Too much, you could say.
Fought off all types.
And yet, you remain.
Must be good at what you do.
Oh, I am.
Look, I may be overstepping here, but do you really feel like day labor is the best fit for you in the Republic?
Well, I mean, you know, Jess and I were hoping to stick together.
This is my best friend.
We look after each other, and these jobs were what was available to both of us, so we do what we gotta do.
Yeah, yeah, we are best friends.
Well,
there's no reason you still couldn't stay together, only perhaps in better positions.
I have a good feeling about you two.
Just so happens that I know of the perfect facility that is looking for people of both your unique talents.
In the city of justice.
Indeed.
Could stick together, six-month contracts minimum, but I have an inkling once you're there, you'll want to stay longer.
And what exactly would we be doing?
What is this facility?
Well,
I can't say much right now,
but it's very special.
It's been in development for quite a while.
It's something that we all very much need.
Let's just say it's
the beginning of the end.
What's what's that supposed to mean?
Everything that we've been fighting for: the ongoing war.
You mean the one with Westport?
Now that is a funny
Where would you hear a thing like that?
People talk, you know?
Hmm.
And what are they saying?
Talking about the train attack on Westport's rail line.
Bunch of people were killed and taken.
I thought you didn't pay attention to
how'd you put it?
Other people's business.
Well, some things you can't avoid.
And like I said,
people talk.
They do, don't they?
You see, I heard that rumor too about the train.
Accusations of our involvement
in such an incident, it simply isn't true.
Well, I heard there were Republic tanks used in the ambush, and it all went down right after the westward expansion.
Really?
How the news gets so distorted the further away you are from the actual event will never cease to amaze me.
You might want to recheck your sources.
I mean, I can't tell you how many times I have heard outrageous and wild claims about this or that, some downright dangerous.
See, nowadays, people make up all kinds of rumors.
Maybe to make themselves look big, or I don't know, maybe they're just bored.
See, what I'm more interested in is facts, truths, things that can be relied upon, witnessed, tested.
It's the only way to be sure of anything in this world.
And what I do know is what I saw with my own two eyes.
It's true, we did expand westward into Liberty Province along the rail line to protect against the rising attacks we had been having.
from raiders or infected.
But the truth is, right after we did that, our province was directly and maliciously attacked by soldiers wearing Westport's flag.
Those that were killed had the marks of guardians.
There's no way they would do that.
Couldn't believe it myself.
But I saw the uniforms and wrist coats.
But this is all public knowledge.
I'm sure you'll see the truth for yourself once you get into town.
How?
There's footage and newsreels.
It's not like we've been hiding anything.
Westport can accuse us of this or that, but I know the truth of what happened.
Honestly, I don't enjoy having to repeat myself about this event, but the reality is I'd rather not have any more of those rumors flying around.
Especially among the newcomers.
You'll find out.
The Republic runs a tight ship.
The real question I have
is if you truly believed that's what occurred,
why would you come work for such an aggressor?
Well, well, we didn't didn't know for sure.
I mean,
you're right.
We hear all kinds of things too.
Just the other day,
I overheard someone say that an infected bite turned someone into stone.
Stone.
This world is a crazy place, isn't it?
I don't know what to believe.
Look, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to.
Hey, no, no, no, no, no.
No need.
I would even encourage you to become more informed with what's happening, especially where you're headed.
But do yourself a favor.
Maybe leave the gossip and these UA newspapers behind you.
Open yourselves up to a new perspective when you get to the Republic.
Those from the outside like to paint us as something we're not.
Pointing fingers, making accusations of this or that.
But really, in the end,
they'll be thanking us.
For this war you mentioned.
What does that even mean?
That
you will just have to wait and see.
Here you are.
Three cooked medium and the red wine you requested.
Oh, wow, this is what a filet is.
I've always wondered.
Life in the Republic has its rewards.
Chancellor,
you have a call from Kramer and Andreas in your cabin.
Well, I hate to eat and run, or
get this to go, but duty calls.
It always does.
Yeah, yeah, no problem.
You got big things to do.
We get it.
I'm still serious about your job prospects in Justice.
Here, take this card and call that number once you get into town.
I'll make sure they know to look out for you.
Wow, um,
well, thank you.
Always nice to meet good people,
Jess, Chris.
I'm sure you'll make the Republic proud.
Enjoy.
and
he's gone.
Holy shit, I thought we were gonna die.
Me too.
Oh man, that guy.
I can't believe you didn't catch on.
Really, why would he?
You were pretty smooth back there.
He saved me, and I was so close to saying something that I definitely shouldn't have.
Well, didn't you still?
I don't think someone from the UA would know any of that stuff that you said about the train attack.
Look, it was fine, but I mean, damn, was he good at spinning shit?
Making it all seem like it was all Westport's fault.
Are you certain it's not
really?
Well, come on, I'm pretty damn sure.
I mean, CJ said it, and she would not lie about something like that.
But this guy,
that's what he's paid to do.
Well, maybe they're both wrong.
You never know.
And what about these jobs?
Not really gonna call that card, are we?
I mean, look, you said it yourself.
We have a ways to go still, and maybe this could give us that way.
And I kind of want to know what war that this guy is talking about.
I guess.
If that's what you want.
What if we need to warn Westport of something that they're planning?
It'd be worth it.
Yeah, yeah, I guess so.
Anyways, look, we'd better eat this before it gets caught.
And, um,
this
is
what?
Cow?
Oh, yeah.
There's tons of cattle in the Republic.
They're known for this, actually.
Lots of open space there.
Oh, it's
so squishy, kind of gross.
Look, it's not.
Well, just cut it and try it.
I mean, hey, though.
If you don't want to, I'll eat it.
If you don't.
Could live off the protein for days.
I don't know about this, Nick.
Trust me, you're going to like it.
I'm pretty sure.
No, no,
about the job and all these risks, we're not exactly flying under the radar.
I thought that's what the plan was.
The closer you are to the people in charge, the easier it'll be to get real shit done.
That's what my life was like back in Westport.
Just look at what we already got.
This beats any type of soup.
Okay, I'm
sure hope you're right.
Every step that we take west is closer to home and to my mom.
I don't know, but I have a good feeling about all of this
now
to the west
to the west
and just
okay
now.
You're getting it.
Oh my god, that's so good.
Let me get a taste of yours real quick.
No, no, stay away.
I'm just trying to make sure it's not poisoned or anything like that.
Descendants will continue after a word from our sponsors.

Breathe, Vera.
You can do this.
On second thought, I can wait a little bit longer, right?
No one will notice if I'm not there.
Cool feet?
Oh, jeez.
Fingers, don't sneak up on me like that.
Oh, what can I say?
It's what I do.
So, you headed in or what?
You know, we're kind of late.
Eventually.
Um, how are you doing?
Oh, you mean after your friend darted me and and dropped me like a sack?
I'm fine.
Should I say I'm sorry?
I can't blame her.
When you think you're gonna go out, you go out swinging.
Surprised the hell out of me, is all.
Truth be told, I haven't slept like that in years.
May need to get some of those darts for myself, if you know what I mean.
Ugh, not me.
I hated feeling out of control.
Kind of like now, huh?
Gotta say, though, you are still rocking that blue dress.
It's the only thing I had.
You want some help?
With a new dress?
No, going in.
Here, take my arm.
I'm not exactly ready.
It's just too late.
Wow.
I didn't think there'd be so many people.
Honestly, I didn't either.
Few family members wandered in from surrounding areas, the rest are just a bunch of hermits that stay in their wings of the house.
Where I can't go?
Exactly.
People here like their privacy.
They all look so
normal.
What were you expecting?
I don't really know.
You never pick any one of them out of the crowd.
That's the point, right?
But, you know, don't be deceived.
There's some heavy hitters here.
Like who?
Uh.
Oh, by the bar in the red leather boots.
That's Francis Amsell.
Look familiar?
Not really.
I guess you're too young.
But his alias was a famous politician.
Used to be a governor, even.
Wow.
Who else?
Yeah, I mean,
everyone's got their own merits in here.
Some more than others, but...
Ooh, oh.
Green dress by the dog painting?
Lauren Black.
She orchestrated the Knox heist in 09.
You mean Fort Knox?
Big job.
Lots of family members conspired in on that one.
You know, opportunists.
But she made it happen.
They didn't get away with much of what they took, but the gold they were able to secure bankrolled the family for years to come.
Got this place through some tough times.
You know, she was up for a matriarch position before your father, but turned it down.
Didn't much like the spotlight.
Huh.
There's kids here?
Only three.
The triplets.
Quentin, Eli, and Sam.
Before you came along, they were the last Bloodborne members here.
Where have they been?
Running around the East Wing.
I'm surprised you haven't heard them screaming up and down the halls.
Then again, the house is pretty big.
If you all wouldn't mind taking your seats,
where do I?
It's all assigned.
I'm sure you'll find your spot over there near the head table.
I figured right by the tenutos.
You met, I say, get
angel senior something else, right?
Sure is.
Kinda glad I'm at that end.
Good luck.
Look at this.
Hey, what the f?
Come on.
Associate!
What the hell is this shit?
Can't even bring me a clean glass?
It's a special occasion.
Can't we act like it?
Jesus.
Is this supposed to be my seat?
Oh, yes, it is, little miss.
Vincent, get on your feet.
Show a little fucking respect here, will you?
For her?
You better, or you're too sore from the the ass kicking she gave you.
Told you, I'm fine, only a few stitches.
But, yeah, who wouldn't be pissed?
Mm-hmm.
Still, respect.
You never know, she may be running this show someday.
Yeah, I don't know about that.
Well, maybe stranger things have happened.
Speaking of, uh, I wanted to apologize for how I reacted before.
What could I say?
I'm
protective of my boy.
I'm sure.
So, uh, Vera, right?
Mm-hmm.
I wanted to know.
Uh.
Oh.
I guess it'll have to wait.
Thank you all for coming out.
I know many of you have traveled a long way to be here tonight.
Some just happened to stumble down the hall.
Even though we often share the same house, it's not often we all come together anymore.
And what better time than to welcome back an old friend?
Friend?
Aren't you the one who's supposed to be good at lying?
Because we all know what you're good at.
Fucking guy, comedian over here.
We also welcome a new face.
If you've already had the privilege to meet her in training, then you witness the fire in her that every family member should strive for.
My daughter, Vera.
Oh, boy.
Go ahead, stand up, Missy.
Go ahead.
Oh,
hi.
Okay, I'll keep this short.
I know you're all ready to see what Chef has prepared for us this evening.
Down street, hurry it up.
I just wanted to say that with everything we've been through and all that has happened the years,
I'm proud we're all still able to come together like this.
Aside from those who never came back,
and I'm hopeful we'll continue to grow in the coming years, welcoming new family members like Vera here, and maybe even bringing back some old ones.
That is, unless Tenuto here doesn't kill them first,
can't make no promises.
Dig in, everyone.
Hey, Oliver, you sure do know how to make a man feel welcome in his own home, don't you?
Well, I try.
Yeah.
So, uh, Vera,
where do I even begin?
You know, your dad is partly right.
I can't tell you how nice it is to have a new fresh face around here.
Get new perspectives and new stories.
I tell you, I've heard everybody else's over and over and over again.
I don't know if I have all that many.
Oh, I don't know.
Benson tells me you two just went through some serious shit together.
Back in Prim, right?
I guess.
Well, you know what happened, right, Oliver?
I'm aware.
He said something about some no-good trapper got the better of you two.
She had darts, dad, and we were paralyzed.
Well, still got the jump on you.
Man, lucky that's all it was.
A little scratch, right?
But I also hear that this trapper, Nakoma, was it is actually still here
in my house.
That can't be true, can it?
You hear a lot of things.
We made a deal.
She remains in Vera's room under our watch.
Oh, so that's how it is now.
Room board to our enemies.
Why does it matter to you?
It doesn't.
I'm just trying to get the lay of the land, is all how I was running things, see?
I've been gone for a little while, so just, you know, catching up.
Oh, really?
Where have you been?
Around.
And what were you doing?
Just, you know, settling some affairs on the East Coast.
Family business.
Like?
Like family business.
Who wants to know?
You're not even wearing a ring yet, miss.
Then give me one of yours.
You've plenty to spare.
A little firecracker here.
Sparks in her eyes.
You know, I was wrong.
She ain't nothing like you, Oliver.
So you say.
Yeah, must take after her mother.
Now, who is that exactly?
Tenuto.
But I'm just trying to get to know our newest member here.
Now, your mom lives in Westport still.
Vincent tells me that's where you're from, right?
Really?
I uh
may have briefly mentioned it.
No, what's what's wrong?
Secrets stay within the family, right?
I'm only curious.
You know what I'm curious of?
Oh, let me guess.
My rings, of course, huh?
Everybody wants to hear that story.
No, I was told that one.
But there's a lot I'm still curious about.
A bit of your history.
Makes me wonder, how is it that you, with everything you've done, aren't at the head of the table, where my father is?
I understand you were next in line.
Did he take your place?
Vera, that's not something we should.
No, you're right.
You're right.
I would be.
But there was a series of unfortunate events.
Oh, really?
Like what?
Genuto, you want to?
It's not my story to tell.
Oh, God, not again.
Well, it's a long one.
It's also the reason I got this nasty scar on my arm here.
Oh, god, dad, I've seen that enough.
Thank you.
Who did that?
No, not who.
No one would ever get the chance to do that.
It was November 2008, during some of my last enforcing days.
I was running a deal down in Puerto Rico.
What kind of deal?
Same old, same old.
Kill the head of a narcotics ring encroaching in another's territory, one that we already had dealings with.
You know, it's just the usual.
But something went down?
Yeah.
Me.
Not during the hit, mind you.
That never happened.
But after.
So.
I was flying home through a storm, right?
Fucking plane stalled out over the ocean.
It was all that I could do to to make it to this tiny little island in between.
It was Little Iguano, Inagua, or some shit.
It's completely uninhabited.
Crashed hard into the shore, tore my arm fucking wide open trying to land.
Crashed in 2008?
Yeah.
Dad, you got back from Twin Towers Jail in 2009.
Then I didn't return to the family until August of 2010.
Well, let's just say I was on that goddamn island for a long fucking time.
We thought you were dead.
Whole family did.
How did you survive?
Wasn't easy.
Wasn't much on that godforsaken island.
Had to stitch myself up using a fishing line and a hook I found on the shore.
And at the same time, I had to make sure no one found me that I didn't want to.
I left Puerto Rico before anyone discovered the hit, but by this time, I needed to be very careful.
Cartel members did runs in those waters constantly.
And on top of that, I was beat to shit.
I wouldn't have been able to put up a fight with anybody, right?
To finally get out of there, I had to figure a way to cross five miles of ocean to reach any kind of civilization.
Yeah, I had to work up to it too, piece by piece.
There were times I thought I'd never make it back.
Oh, that would have been a shame.
Who the fuck asked you?
I smacked the taste out of your mouth, you looked.
How did you eventually get off the island?
I built a fucking raft like the movie Castaway style, you know?
But it was a complete mess.
There ain't no big trees on that goddamn island.
Nothing but crabs and brush.
Seven months alone by myself, progressing like a fucking snail.
And that's not the worst of it.
The whole time I figured the difficult part was getting to the big island.
But
by the time I made it ashore, there,
strangest thing had happened.
Seven months.
So that would mean.
Mm-hmm.
Finally made it to where people would be.
And guess what?
They're infected.
Bingo.
As if my life wasn't complicated enough at that fucking point.
The whole island was running for me.
Someone upstairs really didn't want to make it easy for me to come home.
But I did.
I found the last working boat, and I put those god-forsaken rocks behind me.
I sailed from place to place after that.
Took a hell of a long time to finally come back here with all the shit going on in the rest of the world.
But damn.
It wasn't the best feeling stepping through those front doors of Iram.
September 2010.
I remember because it was only a month after I returned.
That was a whole two years from when you first left.
And you look like hell.
Yeah.
By that time, your old man had already taken my place.
Or would have been mine if I didn't fucking go down like I did.
We barely had enough members together by that point to even be able to take a vote.
And how are we supposed to know?
We thought you were gone.
Mm-hmm.
And you know what, Vera?
Didn't matter to me at the time.
All I was ever thinking about was coming home, seeing my family.
Not the big one, mind you, but my own.
Only to find out my wife Rachel was gone.
Those fucking things took her.
She was my my better half.
Then I'm told my firstborn was taken from me, too.
Before I left, he joined the army and went off to California to live his life.
Tried to get away from all of us, and this
what good did it do?
He was left to die by the people he thought he could trust.
My little angel.
Hey, you still got me, Pops?
Yeah, that's right, I do.
I've heard that story, too.
About your other son.
All you have now, huh?
But I heard it told differently.
Oh, really?
And what did you hear?
That this
family life did eventually catch back up with him.
And that's how he really died.
What's that supposed to mean, huh?
The hell do you know?
You weren't even born yet.
I grew up in Westport.
I know the stories from the people who were there.
So, really, what the hell do you know?
Dad?
You know,
if it's all the same, I think I'm gonna take this meal to go.
We got time to catch up later.
No, come on, Tenuto.
Stay.
I'm taking off.
No, come on, don't.
You don't want me here.
Trust me.
We're just getting started.
We'll talk about something else, okay?
Why don't we refill his glass?
I'm sorry,
please.
That's fine.
Fine.
This place always carries a lot of weight when I come back here.
You know, it sneaks up on you.
You guys enjoy, celebrate.
Have a good evening, everybody.
And welcome to the family, Vera.
Thank you.
Yeah, my pleasure.
I'm
gonna go with him.
Probably the right idea.
Night, Vincent.
And he calls me a good liar.
Sorry if I pushed too hard.
It's just after what you said, I couldn't let him keep talking like that.
You did well.
You didn't back down when he challenged you.
You turned it around on him.
Made a crack in his defense.
Told you, it's in your blood.
Now we just need to move fast.
What do you mean?
Move?
Move where?
I think it's time for your last test.
The final step to prove yourself and earn your ring.
What?
Now?
Never pass up an opportunity that's presented itself only once.
Tenuto's off balance.
He feels defeated and alone.
This is when he's going to slip up.
Wait, wait, wait.
I don't understand.
What am I supposed to do?
You're going to sneak into the furthest part of the West Wing.
What's there?
Where the Tenutos live in Irum.
Wait.
You actually expect me to spy on members of your own family?
In their house, who have a track record of killing many, many, many people, including other members.
That is exactly what you're going to do.

Coach, the energy out there felt different.
What changed for the team today?
It was the new game day scratchers from the California Lottery.
Play is everything.
Those games sent the team's energy through the roof.
Are you saying it was the off-field play that made the difference on the field?
Hey, a little play makes your day, and today, it made the game.
That's all for now.
Coach, one more question.
Play the new Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, and Los Angeles Rams Scratchers from the California Lottery.
A little play can make your day.
Please play responsibly, must be 18 years or older to purchase play or claim.
