Speaker 47 Chapter 17

Speaker 46 Dining with the Devil

Speaker 48 Part Two of Three

Speaker 49 Your part of me should be so lucky to be able to converse with such

Speaker 39 impartial minds.

Speaker 51 How's that?

Speaker 53 Well, for instance,

Speaker 53 you have no idea that you are having lunch with the head of the Republic's government.

Speaker 57 You

Speaker 53 that's right.

Speaker 35 Chancellor Friedrich.

Speaker 49 Oh, wait, so you're the President of the Republic?

Speaker 32 Well, no.

Speaker 50 That's General Kramer.

Speaker 53 Not to give you a civics lesson of the Republic, but I run one of the branches.

Speaker 51 Well, then, what are you doing here on this train? Why don't you just fly around wherever you want it? You seem important enough.

Speaker 59 Perceptive.

Speaker 53 And yes, I could, but I had business that was best attended on the ground.

Speaker 48 Besides, I'm not exactly the biggest fan of planes.

Speaker 58 It's hard to trust a piece of antiquated tech made over a decade ago not to simply fall out of the sky.

Speaker 59 Like many of them do.

Speaker 45 Well, wait, really?

Speaker 25 That that happens?

Speaker 53 To my predecessor, in fact.

Speaker 48 It's how I moved up into this job.

Speaker 46 Yikes.

Speaker 60 Well, but maybe the planes were just not maintained properly.

Speaker 61 There's nothing wrong with old tech as long as you use it right and you know what you're doing.

Speaker 59 Is that so?

Speaker 50 Um, look,

Speaker 56 you'll have to excuse him.

Speaker 51 You know, he used to be a mechanic, so he kind of takes that sort of thing personal.

Speaker 49 Well, you take pride in your work.

Speaker 59 Good for you.

Speaker 49 Unique quality to have.

Speaker 49 I hope you have decent employment lined up with us.

Speaker 49 Where are you two headed?

Speaker 61 Hmm, uh, con contract work, day labor in in in justice.

Speaker 49 Ah, I'm traveling there too.

Speaker 53 You'll love the city.

Speaker 49 Plenty to do and see. I consider it the true heart of the Republic.

Speaker 59 But uh,

Speaker 50 as day labor, really?

Speaker 53 I don't mean any offense, but

Speaker 50 you two don't seem the tie.

Speaker 51 But well, well, I mean, that's that's all that was offered to us.

Speaker 45 Hmm.

Speaker 49 Jess,

Speaker 49 you said you were a mechanic before. Did you fix airplanes?

Speaker 61 Well, mostly cars, but a little bit of everything, really. I mean, access control points, remote security, organic scanning systems, life support modules, biotech

Speaker 62 facilities,

Speaker 27 kind of a jack of all trades.

Speaker 27 Hmm.

Speaker 48 Well, those are some hefty credentials.

Speaker 30 Very unique qualifications.

Speaker 51 Yeah, he's a smart one. You give him a book and he'll quote it back to you cover to cover.

Speaker 59 Interesting.

Speaker 50 And what about you, Chris?

Speaker 39 Me.

Speaker 51 Um, I ain't really nothing like him. Was security detail on the border, but I got tired of risking my neck on the river.

Speaker 58 I don't blame you. Often short-lived line of work.

Speaker 50 So you have first-hand experience with infected?

Speaker 51 You could definitely say that.

Speaker 55 Too much, you could say.

Speaker 41 Fun off all types.

Speaker 49 And yet, you remain.

Speaker 49 Must be good at what you do.

Speaker 59 Oh, I am.

Speaker 49 Look, I may be overstepping here, but do you really feel like day labor is the best fit for you in the Republic?

Speaker 51 Well, I mean, you know, Jess and I were hoping to stick together. This is my best friend.
We look after each other, and these jobs were what was available to both of us, so we do what we gotta do.

Speaker 63 Yeah, yeah, we are best friends.

Speaker 52 Well,

Speaker 49 there's no reason you still couldn't stay together, only perhaps in better positions.

Speaker 53 I have a good feeling about you two.

Speaker 49 Just so happens that I know of the perfect facility that is looking for people of both your unique talents.

Speaker 51 In the city of justice, indeed.

Speaker 49 Could stick together, six-month contracts minimum, but I have an inkling once you're you're there, you'll want to stay longer.

Speaker 51 And what exactly would we be doing?

Speaker 60 What is this facility?

Speaker 52 Well,

Speaker 59 I can't say much right now,

Speaker 46 but it's very special.

Speaker 48 It's been in development for quite a while.

Speaker 49 It's something that we all very

Speaker 46 much need.

Speaker 50 Let's just say it's

Speaker 48 the beginning of the end.

Speaker 25 What's...

Speaker 51 what's that supposed to mean?

Speaker 48 Everything that we've been fighting for.

Speaker 36 The ongoing war.

Speaker 51 You mean the one with Westport?

Speaker 53 Now that is a funny notion.

Speaker 53 Where would you hear a thing like that?

Speaker 51 People talk, you know?

Speaker 51 Hmm.

Speaker 53 And what are they saying?

Speaker 51 Talking about the train attack on Westport's rail line. Bunch of people were killed and taken.

Speaker 48 I thought you didn't pay attention to, uh, how'd you put it? Other people's business.

Speaker 51 Well, some things you can't avoid. And like I said,

Speaker 39 people talk.

Speaker 53 They do, don't they?

Speaker 48 You see, I heard that rumor, too, about the train.

Speaker 56 Accusations of our involvement

Speaker 50 in such an incident, it simply isn't true.

Speaker 51 Well, I heard there were Republic tanks used in the ambush, and it all went down right after the westward expansion.

Speaker 45 Really?

Speaker 48 How the news gets so distorted, the further away you are from the actual event will never cease to amaze me.

Speaker 38 You might want to recheck your sources.

Speaker 58 I mean, I can't tell you how many times I have heard outrageous and wild claims about this or that, some downright dangerous.

Speaker 58 See, nowadays, people make up all kinds of rumors.

Speaker 59 Maybe to make themselves look big, or I don't know, maybe they're just bored.

Speaker 49 See, what I'm more interested in is facts, truths, things that can be relied upon, witnessed, tested.

Speaker 34 It's the only way to be sure of anything in this world.

Speaker 49 And what I do know is what I saw with my own two eyes.

Speaker 49 It's true, we did expand westward into Liberty Province along the rail line to protect against the rising attacks we had been having from raiders or infected. But the truth is,

Speaker 53 right after we did that, our province was directly and maliciously attacked by soldiers wearing Westport's flag.

Speaker 49 Those that were killed had the marks of guardians.

Speaker 39 There's no way they would do that.

Speaker 49 Couldn't believe it myself.

Speaker 49 But I saw the uniforms and wrist coats.

Speaker 49 But this is all public knowledge. I'm sure you'll see the truth for yourself once you get into town.

Speaker 59 How?

Speaker 49 There's footage and newsreels. It's not like we've been hiding anything.
Westport can accuse us of this or that, but I know the truth of what happened.

Speaker 49 Honestly, I don't enjoy having to repeat myself about this event, but the reality is, I'd rather not have any more of those rumors flying around, especially among the newcomers.

Speaker 56 You'll find out.

Speaker 48 The Republic runs a tight ship.

Speaker 59 The real question I have is: if you truly believed that's what occurred,

Speaker 49 why would you come work for such an aggressor?

Speaker 52 Well, what we didn't didn't know for sure.

Speaker 29 I mean,

Speaker 61 you're right.

Speaker 29 We hear all kinds of things too.

Speaker 20 Just the other day, I overheard someone say that an infected bite turned someone into stone.

Speaker 20 Stone.

Speaker 49 This world is a crazy place, isn't it?

Speaker 51 I don't know what to believe.

Speaker 51 Look, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to.

Speaker 53 Hey, no, no, no, no, no.

Speaker 47 No need.

Speaker 49 I would even encourage you to become more informed with what's happening, especially where you're headed.

Speaker 49 But do yourself a favor.

Speaker 50 Maybe leave the gossip in these UA newspapers behind you.

Speaker 49 Open yourselves up to a new perspective when you get to the Republic. Those from the outside like to paint us as something we're not.

Speaker 49 Pointing fingers, making accusations of this or that, but really, in the end,

Speaker 53 they'll be thanking us.

Speaker 46 For this war you mentioned.

Speaker 20 What does that even mean?

Speaker 54 That

Speaker 48 you will just have to wait and see.

Speaker 64 Here you are:

Speaker 17 three cooked medium and the red wine you requested.

Speaker 25 Oh, wow, this is what a filet is.

Speaker 61 I've always wondered.

Speaker 58 Life in the Republic has its rewards,

Speaker 52 Chancellor.

Speaker 30 you have a call from Kramer and Andreas in your cabin.

Speaker 59 Well, I hate to eat and run, or, well, get this to go, but duty calls.

Speaker 53 It always does.

Speaker 51 Yeah, yeah, no problem. You got big things to do.

Speaker 52 We get it.

Speaker 49 I'm still serious about your job prospects in Justice.

Speaker 56 Here,

Speaker 49 take this car and call that number once you get into town. I'll make sure they know to look out for you.

Speaker 45 Wow, um, um

Speaker 25 well, thank you.

Speaker 49 Always nice to meet good people.

Speaker 52 Jess, Chris.

Speaker 49 I'm sure you'll make the Republic proud.

Speaker 57 Enjoy.

Speaker 29 We uh we will

Speaker 52 and

Speaker 55 he's gone. Holy shit, I thought we were gonna die.

Speaker 40 Me too.

Speaker 57 Oh man, that guy.

Speaker 20 I can't believe he didn't catch on.

Speaker 51 Really, why would he?

Speaker 56 You were pretty smooth back there.

Speaker 51 He saved me. And I was so close to saying something that I definitely shouldn't have.

Speaker 62 Well, didn't you still?

Speaker 20 I don't think someone from the UA would know any of that stuff that you said about the train attack.

Speaker 46 Look, it was fine.

Speaker 51 But, I mean, damn, was he good at spinning shit? Making it all seem like it was all Westport's fault?

Speaker 27 Are you certain it's not?

Speaker 51 Really? Well, come on. I'm pretty damn sure.
I mean, CJ said it, and she would not lie about something like that. But this guy?

Speaker 51 that's what he's paid to do.

Speaker 27 Well, maybe they're both wrong.

Speaker 51 You never know.

Speaker 62 And what about these jobs?

Speaker 27 Not really gonna call that card, are we?

Speaker 51 I mean, look, you said it yourself. We have a ways to go still, and maybe this could give us that way.

Speaker 51 And I kind of want to know what war that this guy is talking about.

Speaker 60 I guess.

Speaker 27 If that's what you want.

Speaker 51 What if we need to warn Westward of something that they're planning? It'd be worth it.

Speaker 60 Yeah, yeah, I guess so.

Speaker 51 Anyways, look, we'd better eat this before it gets caught.

Speaker 25 And um...

Speaker 62 This

Speaker 41 is...

Speaker 25 What?

Speaker 52 Cow?

Speaker 59 Oh, yeah.

Speaker 51 There's tons of cattle in the Republic. They're known for this, actually.
Lots of open space there.

Speaker 41 Oh, just

Speaker 56 so

Speaker 27 squishy, kind of gross.

Speaker 51 Look, it's not.

Speaker 50 Well, just cut it and try it.

Speaker 59 I mean, hey, though, if you don't want to, I'll eat it.

Speaker 51 If you don't, could live off the protein for days.

Speaker 27 I don't know about this, Nick.

Speaker 51 Trust me, you're going to like it.

Speaker 43 I'm pretty sure.

Speaker 59 No, no.

Speaker 27 About the job and all these risks, we're not exactly flying under the radar.

Speaker 55 I thought that's what the plan was.

Speaker 51 The closer you are to the people in charge, the easier it'll be to get real shit done. That's what my life was like back in Westport.
Just look at what we already got. This beats any type of soup.

Speaker 27 Okay, I'm

Speaker 27 sure I hope you're right.

Speaker 51 Every step that we take west is closer to home and to my mom.

Speaker 51 I don't know, but I have a good feeling about all of this.

Speaker 39 Now,

Speaker 39 to the west.

Speaker 61 Uh, to the west,

Speaker 60 and uh, just

Speaker 41 okay,

Speaker 59 now you're getting it.

Speaker 41 Oh my god, that's so good.

Speaker 51 Let me get a taste of yours real quick. No, no, stay away.
I'm just trying to make sure it's not poisoned or anything like that.

Speaker 47 Descendants will continue after a word from our sponsors.

Speaker 59 And now, back to descendants.

Speaker 27 breathe, Vera. You can do this.

Speaker 41 On second thought, I can wait a little bit longer, right?

Speaker 27 No one will notice if I'm not there.

Speaker 62 Cool feet?

Speaker 41 Oh, jeez.

Speaker 27 Fingers, don't sneak up on me like that.

Speaker 64 Oh, what can I say? It's what I do. So, you headed in, or what?

Speaker 59 You know, we're kind of late.

Speaker 27 Eventually

Speaker 27 How are you doing?

Speaker 64 Oh, you mean after your friend darted me and dropped me like a sack?

Speaker 62 I'm fine.

Speaker 27 Should I say I'm sorry?

Speaker 25 I can't blame her.

Speaker 64 When you think you're gonna go out, you go out swinging. Surprised the hell out of me is all.
Truth be told, I haven't slept like that in years.

Speaker 64 May need to get some of those darts for myself, if you know what I mean.

Speaker 27 Ugh, not me.

Speaker 60 I hated feeling out of control.

Speaker 64 Kinda like now, huh?

Speaker 64 Gotta say, though, you are still rocking that blue dress.

Speaker 27 It's the only thing I had.

Speaker 43 You want some help?

Speaker 27 With a new dress?

Speaker 64 No, going in.

Speaker 64 Here, take my arm.

Speaker 27 I'm not exactly ready.

Speaker 18 It's too late.

Speaker 45 Wow.

Speaker 27 I didn't think there'd be so many people.

Speaker 64 Honestly, I didn't either. Few family members wandered in from surrounding areas, the rest are just a bunch bunch of hermits that stay in their wings of the house.

Speaker 61 Where I can't go?

Speaker 43 Exactly.

Speaker 64 People here like their privacy.

Speaker 41 They all look so

Speaker 52 normal.

Speaker 64 What were you expecting?

Speaker 52 I don't really know.

Speaker 27 You never pick any one of them out of the crowd.

Speaker 64 Well, that's the point, right? But, you know, don't be deceived. There's some heavy hitters here.

Speaker 62 Like who?

Speaker 41 Uh,

Speaker 64 oh, by the bar in the red leather boots, that's Francis Amsel.

Speaker 64 Look familiar?

Speaker 52 Not really.

Speaker 64 I guess you're too young. But his alias was a famous politician.
Used to be a governor, even.

Speaker 52 Wow.

Speaker 67 Who else?

Speaker 64 Yeah, I mean,

Speaker 64 everyone's got their own merits in here. Some more than others, but...
Oh, oh, Green Dress by the dog painting? Lauren Black. She orchestrated the Knox heist in 09.

Speaker 27 You mean Fort Knox?

Speaker 64 Big job. Lots of family members conspired in on that one.
You know, opportunists. But she made it happen.

Speaker 64 They didn't get away with much of what they took, but the gold they were able to secure bankrolled the family for years to come.

Speaker 64 Got this place through some tough times. You know, she was up for a matriarch position before your father, but turned it down.
Didn't much like the spotlight. Huh.

Speaker 27 There's kids here?

Speaker 64 Only three.

Speaker 26 The triplets.

Speaker 64 Quentin, Eli, and Sam. Before you came along, they were the last Bloodboard members here.

Speaker 27 Where have they been?

Speaker 64 Running around the East Wing. I'm surprised you haven't heard them screaming up and down the halls.

Speaker 26 Then again, the house is pretty big.

Speaker 55 If you all wouldn't mind taking your seats...

Speaker 2 Where do I... It's all assigned.

Speaker 64 I'm sure you'll find your spot over there near the head table.

Speaker 27 I figured, right by the tenutos.

Speaker 64 You met, Isaac?

Speaker 64 Angel Senior is something else, right?

Speaker 25 Sure is.

Speaker 64 Kinda glad I'm at that end.

Speaker 18 Come up.

Speaker 18 This fucking thing is modeling me.

Speaker 46 Look at this. Hey, what the f?

Speaker 56 Come on. Associate!

Speaker 46 What the hell is this shit? Can't even bring me a clean glass? It's a special occasion. Can't we act like it?

Speaker 46 Jesus.

Speaker 27 Is this supposed to be my seat?

Speaker 46 Oh, yes, it is, little miss. Vincent, get on your feet.
Show a little fucking respect here, will you?

Speaker 41 For her?

Speaker 46 You better, or you're too sore from the ass-kicking she gave you.

Speaker 39 Told you I'm fine. Only a few stitches.

Speaker 31 But yeah, who wouldn't be pissed?

Speaker 3 Mm-hmm.

Speaker 46 Still, respect. You never know.
She may be running this show someday.

Speaker 27 Yeah, I don't know about that.

Speaker 46 Well, maybe. Stranger things have happened.

Speaker 59 Speaking of,

Speaker 46 I wanted to apologize for how I reacted before.

Speaker 46 What could I say? Um, I'm

Speaker 46 I'm protective of my boy.

Speaker 27 I'm sure

Speaker 46 So uh Vera, right?

Speaker 41 Mm-hmm.

Speaker 46 I wanted to know

Speaker 41 oh

Speaker 46 I guess it'll have to wait.

Speaker 56 Thank you all for coming out.

Speaker 59 I know many of you have traveled a long way to be here tonight. Some just happened to stumble down the hall.

Speaker 68 Even though we often share the same house, it's not often we all come together anymore. And what better time than to welcome back an old friend?

Speaker 45 Friend?

Speaker 46 Aren't you the one that's supposed to be good at lying?

Speaker 56 Because we all know what you're good at.

Speaker 46 Fucking guy, comedian over here.

Speaker 56 We also welcome a new face.

Speaker 68 If you've already had the privilege to meet her in training, then you witnessed the fire in her that every family member should strive for.

Speaker 59 My daughter, Vera.

Speaker 46 Go ahead, stand up, Missy. Go ahead.

Speaker 52 Oh,

Speaker 27 hi.

Speaker 56 Okay, I'll keep this short.

Speaker 68 I know you're all ready to see what Chef has prepared for us this evening.

Speaker 52 Down street, hurry it up.

Speaker 68 I just wanted to say that with everything we've been through and all that has happened over the years, I'm proud we're all still able to come together like this.

Speaker 46 Aside from those who never came back.

Speaker 68 And I'm hopeful we'll continue to grow in the coming years, welcoming new family members, like Vera here, and maybe even bringing back some old ones.

Speaker 68 That is unless Tenuto here doesn't kill them first.

Speaker 46 Can't make no promises.

Speaker 68 Dig in, everyone.

Speaker 46 Hey, Oliver, you sure do know how to make a man feel welcome in his own home, don't you?

Speaker 68 Well, I try.

Speaker 3 Yeah.

Speaker 39 So, uh, Vera,

Speaker 46 where do I even begin?

Speaker 46 You know, your dad is partly right. I can't tell you how nice it is to have a new fresh face around here.
Get new perspectives and new stories.

Speaker 46 I tell you, I've heard everybody else's over and over and over again.

Speaker 27 I don't know if I have all that many.

Speaker 41 Oh, I don't know.

Speaker 46 Benson tells me you two just went through some serious shit together. Back in Prim, right?

Speaker 27 I guess.

Speaker 46 Well, you know what happened, right, Oliver?

Speaker 68 I'm aware.

Speaker 46 He said something about some no-good trapper got the better of you two.

Speaker 39 She had darts, dad.

Speaker 56 We were paralyzed.

Speaker 46 Well, still got the jump on you. Lucky that's all it was.
A little scratch, right?

Speaker 46 But I also hear that this trapper, Nakoma, was it?

Speaker 46 Is actually still here in my house.

Speaker 46 That can't be true, can it?

Speaker 27 You hear a lot of things.

Speaker 53 We made a deal.

Speaker 68 She remains in Vera's room under our watch.

Speaker 46 Oh, so that's how it is now. Room and board to our enemies.

Speaker 27 Why does it matter to you?

Speaker 59 It doesn't.

Speaker 46 I'm just trying to get the lay of the land, is all. How Oliver's running things, see? I've been gone for a little while, so just uh, you know, catching up.

Speaker 27 Oh, really?

Speaker 27 Where have you been

Speaker 46 around?

Speaker 27 And what were you doing?

Speaker 46 Just, you know, settling some affairs on the east coast. Family business.

Speaker 25 Like?

Speaker 46 Like family business. Who wants to know? You're not even wearing a ring yet, miss.

Speaker 27 Then give me one of yours. You've plenty to spare.

Speaker 56 A little firecracker here.

Speaker 46 Sparks in

Speaker 59 So you say.

Speaker 46 Yeah, must take after a mother. Now, who is that exactly?

Speaker 68 Tenuto.

Speaker 46 Well, I'm just trying to get to know our newest member here.

Speaker 46 Now, your mom lives in Westport still.

Speaker 46 Vincent tells me that's where you're from, right?

Speaker 27 Really?

Speaker 59 I uh

Speaker 30 may have briefly mentioned it.

Speaker 46 Yeah, what's what's wrong? Secrets stay within the family, right? I'm only curious.

Speaker 27 You know what I'm curious of?

Speaker 46 Oh, let me guess. My rings, of course, huh? Everybody wants to hear that story.

Speaker 27 No, I was told that one.

Speaker 27 But there's a lot I'm still curious about. A bit of your history.

Speaker 27 Makes me wonder: how is it that you, with everything you've done, aren't at the head of the table where my father is?

Speaker 28 I understand you were next in line.

Speaker 27 Did he take your place?

Speaker 68 Vera, that's not something we should.

Speaker 46 No, you're right. You're right.

Speaker 56 I would be.

Speaker 46 But there was a series of unfortunate events.

Speaker 27 Oh, really?

Speaker 25 Like what?

Speaker 68 Denuto, you want to? It's not my story to tell.

Speaker 46 Oh, God, not again. Well, it's a long one.

Speaker 46 It's also the reason I got this nasty scar on my arm here.

Speaker 51 Oh, god, dad, I've seen that enough. Thank you.

Speaker 67 Who did that?

Speaker 45 No, not who.

Speaker 46 No one would ever get the chance to do that.

Speaker 46 It was November 2008, during some of my last enforcing days. I was running a deal down in Puerto Rico.

Speaker 27 What kind of deal?

Speaker 46 Same old, same old. Kill the head of a narcotics ring encroaching in another's territory, one that we already had dealings with.
You know, it's just the usual.

Speaker 27 But something went down?

Speaker 46 Yeah, me.

Speaker 46 Not during the hit, mind you. That never happened, but after.

Speaker 45 so,

Speaker 46 I was flying home through a storm, right? Fucking plane stalled out over the ocean. It was all that I could do to make it to this tiny little island in between.

Speaker 46 It was Little Iguano, Inagua, or some shit. It's completely uninhabited.
Crashed hard into the shore. Tore my arm fucking wide open trying to land.

Speaker 27 Crashed in 2008?

Speaker 46 Yeah.

Speaker 27 Dad, you got back from Twin Towers jail in 2009.

Speaker 68 Then I didn't return to the family until August of 2010.

Speaker 46 Well, let's just say I was on that goddamn island for a long fucking time.

Speaker 39 We thought you were dead. Whole family did.

Speaker 27 How did you survive?

Speaker 46 Wasn't easy.

Speaker 46 Wasn't much on that godforsaken island. Had to stitch myself up using a fishing line and a hook I found on shore.

Speaker 46 And at the same time, I had to make sure no one found me that I didn't want to.

Speaker 46 I left Puerto Rico before anyone discovered the hit, but by this time, I needed to be very careful. Cartel members did runs in those waters constantly.
And on top of that, I was beat to shit.

Speaker 46 I wouldn't have been able to put up a fight with anybody, right?

Speaker 46 To finally get out of there, I had to figure a way to cross five miles of ocean to reach any kind of civilization.

Speaker 46 Yeah, I had to work up to it, too, piece by piece.

Speaker 46 There were times I thought I'd never make it back.

Speaker 39 Oh, that would have been a shame.

Speaker 46 Who the fuck asked you?

Speaker 27 I smacked a taste out of your mouth, you looked how did you eventually get off the island?

Speaker 46 I built a fucking raft like the movie castaway style, you know.

Speaker 46 But it was a complete mess. There ain't no big trees on that goddamn island, nothing but crabs and brush.
Seven months alone by myself, progressing like a fucking snail.

Speaker 46 And that's not the worst of it. The whole time, I figured the difficult part was getting to the big island.

Speaker 46 But

Speaker 46 by the time I made it ashore, there

Speaker 46 strangest thing had happened.

Speaker 67 Seven months.

Speaker 27 So that would mean... Mm-hmm.

Speaker 46 Finally made it to where people would be.

Speaker 46 And guess what?

Speaker 30 They're infected.

Speaker 46 Bingo. As if my life wasn't complicated enough at that fucking point.
The whole island was running for me.

Speaker 46 Someone upstairs really didn't want to make it easy for me to come home.

Speaker 46 But I did.

Speaker 46 I found the last working boat, and I put those godforsaken rocks behind me.

Speaker 46 I sailed from place to place after that.

Speaker 46 Took a hell of a long time to finally come back here with all the shit going on in the rest of the world.

Speaker 46 But damn,

Speaker 46 if it wasn't the best feeling stepping through those front doors of Iram.

Speaker 68 September 2010. I remember because it was only a month after I returned.
That was a whole two years from when you first left.

Speaker 68 And you look like hell.

Speaker 3 Yeah.

Speaker 46 By that time, your old man had already taken my place.

Speaker 46 What would have been mine if I didn't fucking go down like I did?

Speaker 68 We barely had enough members together by that point to even be able to take a vote.

Speaker 59 And how are we supposed to know?

Speaker 48 We thought you were gone.

Speaker 52 Mm-hmm.

Speaker 46 And you know what, Vera?

Speaker 46 Didn't matter to me at the time. All I was ever thinking about was coming home, seeing my family.
Not the big one, mind you, but my own.

Speaker 46 Only to find out my wife Rachel was gone.

Speaker 46 Those fucking things took her.

Speaker 46 She was my better half.

Speaker 46 Then I'm told my firstborn was taken from me, too.

Speaker 46 Before I left, he joined the army and went off to California to live his life. Tried to get away from all of us.
And this.

Speaker 46 What good did it do?

Speaker 46 He was left to die by the people he thought he could trust.

Speaker 46 My little angel.

Speaker 39 Hey, you still got me, pops?

Speaker 46 Yeah, that's right. I do.

Speaker 27 I've heard that story, too. About your other son.

Speaker 46 Oh, you have now, huh?

Speaker 43 But I heard it told differently.

Speaker 52 Oh, really?

Speaker 46 And what did you hear?

Speaker 27 That this family life did eventually catch back up with him. And that's how he really died.

Speaker 46 What's that supposed to mean, huh?

Speaker 31 The hell do you know?

Speaker 46 You weren't even born yet.

Speaker 27 I grew up in Westport. I know the stories from the people who were there.

Speaker 27 So, really, what the hell do you know?

Speaker 46 Dad,

Speaker 46 you know.

Speaker 46 If it's all the same, I think I'm gonna take this meal to go.

Speaker 39 We got time to catch up later.

Speaker 68 Now, come on, Tenuto.

Speaker 36 Say, I'm taking off. No, come on, don't.

Speaker 41 You don't want me here, trust me.

Speaker 31 We're just getting started.

Speaker 68 We'll talk about something else, okay?

Speaker 50 Why don't we refill his glass? And I'm sorry.

Speaker 45 No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, please.

Speaker 46 That's fine. Fine.

Speaker 46 This place always carries a lot of weight when I come back here. You know, it sneaks up on you.

Speaker 46 You guys enjoy, celebrate. Have a good evening, everybody.

Speaker 46 And welcome to the family, Vera.

Speaker 60 Thank you.

Speaker 46 Yeah, Yeah, my pleasure.

Speaker 46 I'm uh gonna go with him.

Speaker 68 Probably the right idea. Night, Vincent.

Speaker 59 And he calls me a good liar.

Speaker 27 Sorry if I pushed too hard. It's just after what you said, I couldn't let him keep talking like that.

Speaker 68 You did well. You didn't back down when he challenged you.
You turned it around on him, made a crack in his defense, Told you, it's in your blood.

Speaker 68 Now we just need to move fast.

Speaker 43 What do you mean?

Speaker 41 Move?

Speaker 68 Move where? I think it's time for your last test. The final step to prove yourself and earn your ring.

Speaker 25 What? Now?

Speaker 68 Never pass up an opportunity that's presented itself only once. Tenuto's off balance.

Speaker 35 He feels defeated and alone.

Speaker 68 This is when he's going to slip up.

Speaker 27 Wait, wait, wait. I don't understand.
What am I supposed to do?

Speaker 68 You're going to sneak into the furthest part of the West Wing.

Speaker 27 What's there?

Speaker 68 Where the Tenutos live in Irim.

Speaker 27 Wait, you actually expect me to spy on members of your own family in their house who have a track record of killing many, many, many people, including other members.

Speaker 68 That is exactly what you're going to do.
