Chapter 3:

The Other Side of the Wall

Part Two of Two

All right, all right, make a hole.

That means out of my way.

Move.

Oh, might have some rotten meat this time, huh?

Move!

Easy!

Fuck you!

Alex, don't!

Alex!

You just don't learn, do you?

You're in for it now.

Alex!

For shit's sake, keep your mouth shut.

Anybody else want some?

Hey!

Hey!

Do not damage him.

Those are mine.

Yours, huh?

You sure about that?

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Alex, are you okay?

Kinda.

Where are you taking us?

You sure any of these are fit for the arena?

Look at this pretty one.

Could be used elsewhere.

Hey!

Hey, don't touch her!

Oh, is that how it's gonna be, huh?

Go!

You watch the fuck you say.

Cause I touch what I want.

Shit!

And that's not.

Yeah.

We got a bunch of fighters here, don't we?

Exactly, so get your hands off them.

I picked these for a reason.

Look at the wrists.

Barcodes.

These are guardians from Westport, and they're mine.

What's your name?

Nicoma Birch.

Don't see you anywhere on the hand, receive.

Got no claim here.

What?

Where?

Right there.

Signed on delivery.

Deringer?

He sold to us, nor the names on the contract.

And I do what the paper says.

Derringer!

What can I say?

Fucking backstabbing after everything!

Things are different now.

Don't worry, I'll be sure to cut you in as well.

I'm gonna need someone to, you know, rally up and, you know, get everything.

Change it.

Change it now.

I'm sorry.

Too late.

It's official.

Signed, sealed, delivered.

Change it

before it is really too late.

This is the boar's paper.

And

his name's on it.

Nothing I can do.

What if he's dead?

Does that matter?

But the only thing that would, actually.

The hell you saying?

Shit.

What the hell?

I never use those.

I try to save my special red darts for when I have to deal with some big pieces of shit.

But being stabbed in the back by you, Derringer.

It's fitting.

Stop it.

Take it out of something.

Can't.

It's too late.

Already in the bloodstream.

There are only about three minutes left for him.

What did you do?

These neurotoxins come from special yellow frogs of mine.

I keep them in a perfect, comfortable place no one will ever find, but they thrive there.

Keeps their toxins very potent.

Shit works great on big infected-most anything that breathes.

Takes down an elephant, even

kills by blocking the nerve signals and the muscles.

You can't move.

Oh, yeah.

The last two minutes are not very pleasant at all.

Violent arrhythmia as your heart quivers to the point it practically explodes.

Why would you ever fucking stab me in the back?

Not cool.

Fine.

What?

I'm not a monster.

That was...

better for him in the end.

Sign here.

You want me to just write over his...

Yeah, why not?

Fuck it.

Does this happen often?

People work getting messed up.

People try to take what's yours.

Is that pretty common?

Not now, it won't be.

We good?

We'll be back after a brief word from our sponsors.

It's that time of year again, back to school season.

And Instacart knows that the only thing harder than getting back into the swing of things is getting all the back-to-school supplies, snacks, and essentials you need.

So here's your reminder to make your life a little easier this season.

Shop favorites from Staples, Best Buy, and Costco all delivered through Instacart so that you can get some time back and do whatever it is that you need to get your life back on track.

Instacart, we're here.

A little play can make your day.

And now we continue with Descendants.

Walk.

And if you don't want to walk anymore, let me know.

I have a brown dart that will make sure that you can't walk anymore.

Disgusting.

At least there's some dignity in a bully.

There's no dignity in any death.

Now march.

A real soldier knows different.

Uniformed men have bigger weapons only to make worse atrocities.

Trust me, I've seen it.

You just follow under a different flag.

Just shut up.

Anything you say they can use use against you.

Very wise.

Hey!

Jacoba!

I got some more papers for you to sign.

Coming!

Jack,

get photos of the new contenders.

Nick, they don't know who we are.

They can't.

If they find out, this could get worse.

Don't need to tell me.

I won't say a word.

First name is only right.

Right.

Enough of the chatter.

What about.

What about this guy?

Hey.

what's your name?

Vincent.

He's mine, too.

No guardian, Mark.

You sure he shouldn't be sent to the camps?

I'm only here because I want to be.

Hey, what about that one?

Hey, get out here.

Quit hiding.

Oh, but please, please, I can't.

Where are you taking?

This one, sure as hell, ain't no fighter.

We should feed him to them.

I really am not.

I'm not supposed to be here.

What the hell's in the case, huh?

This?

Give me that!

It's nothing!

Give me a suitcase!

No!

Please!

It's just my papers, please.

They're all I have left.

They mean nothing to you.

I'll give you whatever you want.

You can't take them from me.

They do now.

Please.

No.

They're mine.

No!

My papers, please.

It's all I want.

A fighter now?

Fuck it.

No one's gonna miss this one.

It's not our fight.

No, stop.

Back the fuck off.

He's mine.

On receipt, same as the rest.

You don't need all of them.

Two working hands are better than one.

This ball fucking baby's bleeding.

Then I'm burning his papers.

No!

Stop the papers!

Not here, he isn't, and no, you aren't.

I brought him in.

That includes everything in his possession.

Or you and I can have a conversation of our own.

Oh, damn it.

He's pissing himself again.

You're lucky the boy likes you.

You're lucky I like you.

You don't like me.

How do you know?

Whatever.

Take it.

I got other shit to deal with.

Oh, God.

Wonderful.

You pissed yourself?

Well, you live like that for now.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Shut up.

You're gonna make it worse for yourself.

What is all this garbage?

Just my papers.

my journal.

Whatever, just grab them so we can get going.

Boy, he can keep his shit.

What about mine?

I had a journal too.

If it was important to you, you should have held on to it.

That is some bullshit.

Ugh, you should have let it happen.

Had to listen to this bald twat since we got on the train.

I'm tired of it.

Dude, the fuck is your problem?

Stay in line.

Not one word.

I mean it.

Go on, you too.

What?

You think you're special or something?

Why Why the hell should we do a damn thing?

Huh?

Call O'Wally back.

Rather be dead than your slave.

Just because I saved him doesn't mean I'd do the same for you.

We're always in need of more fertilizer.

I hate this place.

I can give you other options.

Same that were given to me when I was in your shoes.

What does that mean?

Keep your head down.

Do what I say, and I won't let anyone here harm you.

Well, not human anyway.

Told ya.

They're little games.

That's your only option.

Even if you found a way free from your chains and somehow got over the wall, there's still 50 miles of desert in every direction.

Nowhere to go.

Sure, you can fight everyone here if you want, but you might as well save your strength for when you really need it.

All right, follow me.

Infected fighting pits?

That's what they run here?

I've seen those before.

Not like this, you haven't.

Holy.

Damn.

They have a monorail?

Yeah.

Like I said, you've never seen anything at this level.

But these games, you can win, right?

I did.

But few ever do.

Hey.

It's not like we haven't done this exact thing before.

Alex, three times.

Fuck you, Nick.

Fuck you so very much and fuck those fucking pills.

Ah, for training.

I heard you guardians had an arena.

So you did well.

You win?

Well,

we killed all the infected.

Then I got some winning horses.

That's it.

We survive.

We get out.

All of us.

If you survive and get out, that's how it goes.

There's an exit in every game.

Pre-chosen tunnel hidden somewhere inside each arena.

Door in the basement of a a house or the back of a semi-truck.

They're designed to be hard to find but accessible.

And they lead out of the arena.

That's how you win?

Every time.

The exit tunnel will take you back to the starting point, the winner circle, where you'll be made a citizen.

Spectators wouldn't pay money if there wasn't an honest chance.

That's it?

And they'll let us out of the city once we get there.

How do you know?

I did.

Cross that finish line, and you're free.

It's one of their rules.

And they're all about those.

Wait, so you got out, and in turn, went and captured some more slaves for their camp?

I didn't make this world, I just live in it.

And so do you.

Even in my position, there is no such thing as being truly free.

We all need to live.

Well, it sounds like no is always an option.

Sure.

Why don't you tell that to to one of those?

Whoa.

Pacifists usually stain the entrance walls.

What the hell is that?

Something new.

There's an infected in that pen?

Yeah, the further you get outside the city, States, the bigger the...

Oh, damn.

I can't see it.

It's right between the trees there.

Look.

You keep it caged up?

Like this is some zoo?

Until they release them into the larger arenas, these are their holding pens.

Hey, Seal!

What'd you get?

Ah, Seals at lunch.

You got me again.

You got here in a hurry.

Which animal were you?

Oh, Wombat.

Real funny.

It's fucking walrus.

Just wanted to make sure that I got it right.

Looks like you have a lot of jobs around here.

Yeah.

That sounds big.

How'd they get this one?

Took a hell of a lot.

That's all I know.

So, uh, which one of you's fishes gonna end up fighting Buffalo Bill?

I mean,

which one of you fishes is gonna die to Buffalo Bill?

I still can't see it.

Look deep.

Past all the leaves.

It's magnificent.

Get your rocks off to infected?

God, you're a weird motherfucker.

I saw it.

That's gotta be the biggest infected I've ever seen.

Came from somewhere deep in the frontier.

Where the food grows big, so do they.

The crazy thing is, this one right here, he's got one cloudy eye and one green.

What?

Really?

It can't be the one we saw before.

Can it?

No.

The one I saw had two.

And that one was no bigger than Alex.

You fucking listening?

Did you hear what I said?

This ain't from where you're from.

This one came in heavily sedated on a fucking plane.

And trust me, we had to get it in here in a hurry.

I can't see anything.

Do you still have eyes on it?

I think it's hiding now.

Why is it called Buffalo Bill?

Wearing some skin like a mask over its face.

I guess somebody called it that from some old movie.

It's most likely removed from a previous alpha, an old leader.

No one's talking to you, no.

Watch it!

Let him speak.

Why?

Good information doesn't matter the source if it saves lives later.

Speak.

Exactly.

Hurry up.

Alvin, it's okay.

Just please tell us.

There are

alphas that sometimes has a show of dominance.

Will wear the skin of a previous leader.

It shows others their force.

Infected hierarchy is all about strength.

In mind and body.

Alright.

I see your use now.

How far?

Who comes to watch?

You'd be surprised if we've seen find their way here.

Neanderbelly stretches much farther than goodmen dare go.

Come on, isn't that close enough?

I want to see.

Yeah, me too.

If we have to do this, we should at least know what we're up against.

I knew this was a special group.

Well, she's not our fucking friend.

She's our captor.

I

still don't see it.

The enclosure's pretty big.

Well, it had to be to hold it in.

Holy shit.

Feel that?

Yeah.

How

big is it exactly?

Someone said 15 feet.

No way.

How?

They adapt to their environment.

Large amounts of food, quick reproductive cycles, and if there's mega fauna, they grow to the size of their meals.

Oh, yeah.

This is a smart one, huh?

Look at him.

Trying shit.

It just said something.

It's been roaring all morning.

Those are words.

Interesting.

I've never heard anything like that before.

I don't even.

Where is it?

I see him now.

How is it talking?

Get back!

Wait.

That's enough, that's enough.

Hey, take her to be processed.

He's looking at you.

Me?

Impossible.

Anything past first generations,

they don't have residual memories.

No way it could.

Enough side zone!

Get the hell out of here!

You heard him!

Move!

Go on!

Nicholas, come on!

Move him down!

I hear it, Nicholas.

Nicholas!

Swing!

He ain't listening!

Back up!

Back up!

again

what should you award?
