Chapter 15

Valley of the Shadow of Death

Part 3 of Three

How long do we have to wait in here?

You have somewhere else to be?

I don't like not having my darts.

You do understand this was the only way I could get them to let you live.

You really think they would have killed me?

Fingers sure looked like she was ready to.

And you're fine with all this, how they do things.

Were you fine with how the boar ran things in Prim?

But you went along with them anyway.

I'm taking advantage of my situation.

How is this any different?

At least I didn't like it.

I see the look on your face.

You're enjoying this.

Don't confuse curiosity with enjoyment.

You'll be happy to know Fingers is already recovering.

Albeit slowly.

Uh-huh.

Your darts are truly unique.

Our armorer has seen just about every weapon you can imagine, but nothing like this.

What can I say?

They're special.

How does it work?

You load the dart in the blow gun, poof, sticks where you shoot it.

And as long as you get into the skin deep enough, they go down.

And the darts, they're dipped in different types of poisons, I'm assuming.

Where does that come from?

Do you make it?

You know, your stay here is contingent upon understanding how all this works.

Nakoma.

Frogs, okay?

Comes from frogs.

Poisonous ones?

Obviously.

These frogs live anywhere around here?

Columbia.

You don't travel there, do you?

No, I don't.

Then where do you go?

How are you able to keep replenishing your supply?

What does it matter?

Nakoma.

It does.

Okay, this is important to to me.

You get that, right?

Those darts keep you alive.

No, it's more than that.

These are part of who I am.

This is my family secret.

You should understand that.

I do.

And I have shared a great deal of mine already with you.

This way, we can be even.

Tell me.

And then you can add this bag.

The carvings on your tube, it was handmade.

Someone give that to you?

Yes.

Who?

My mom.

She gave it to me when I was little.

Back when I.

Back when we used to live together on the reservation.

Nicoma!

Nicoma!

Yeah, mom?

What is your mom's name?

Was

Leora Birch.

There you are.

Guess what?

I finished it.

Your very own Nakoma.

Here.

Test it out.

Steady.

Steady.

Yes.

It's perfect.

That's my girl.

She made the tube.

She made all of this.

And passed it on to me.

Does that mean I get my own darts now, Mama?

Only if you make your own.

And you promise to be safe.

Can we now?

I know what to do.

I'll be careful.

My mom was a toxicologist, helping indigenous people recover from chemical exposures.

She would develop things like antivenom from snakes and even brought in techniques refined by other cultures for creating new medicines.

Some of those were extracted from certain species of frogs that she raised and kept to study.

Okay.

All right, careful now.

I am, Mom.

Don't let it get away.

Hold it like I showed you.

Like this?

Mm-hmm.

Remember, the frog needs to be under distress to emit the toxins.

Not too hard, just a little.

I remember.

remember.

Then, roll the dart tip on the back.

Exactly!

Wow, I'm impressed.

Okay, that's enough on there.

Cure it with the smoke.

Once it's dry, put the finished ones in the holder and the extracted frogs in the tank on the left.

You didn't even need me.

So, you learned to weaponize what she already had.

Only after the outbreak occurred and out of necessity.

My father was in another town working when everything happened.

He never came home.

My mom and I had to fend for ourselves.

My mother created the darts and blowguns, learning the best ways to use the toxins from the frogs against the infected.

It was the only defense we had.

But it worked.

Kept us alive.

And all all those who lived close to us on the reservation.

There!

Another one's climbing onto the gate.

Daughter!

Yes!

That's my girl.

Oh, I've got that one right there.

Yes!

Hurry, Nakoma.

Get back inside before more come.

So you just continued to extract more toxins from the frogs?

Did you take them with you?

No.

They can't be moved.

The frogs have to live under special conditions.

They eat special bugs that have to eat special plants, otherwise, they won't be poisonous anymore.

It's a whole ecosystem thing my mom had developed years prior.

Self-sustaining, self-powered, but not mobile.

It was perfect.

Life wasn't easy, but we found ways to survive.

We lived with the land,

farming our own food in our own special little space.

But then

what happened?

Boulder happened.

Mom!

What was that?

I don't know.

Just please get in here.

The city was overrun by Inks infected, but I thought they blew it up.

There were still survivors from Boulder who were able to flee.

And with them, brought all new horrors.

Mom!

It's not working!

Their skin won't take the darts!

It's too thick, I can't stop them either.

I can't stop them either!

Listen, take the escape bag and run, Nakoma.

Run, mom!

I'm not leaving you, please.

I can't, I can't go.

Listen to me.

I gotta run.

Mom.

Mom.

I did what my mom asked.

I ran,

and I've never stopped running.

The entire reservation was lost.

As far as I know, I was the only one of my people who survived.

The few times I ever returned to that place were to make more darts.

The frog habitat was designed to last.

Plenty of water, power, it's well protected and hidden.

It hasn't been easy on my own.

The only reason I've been able to survive at all is because of my mom.

And this gift

she left me.

Nakoma, I.

I didn't.

I...

I never...

Uh-huh.

Where is this place?

What reservation?

Why?

This is an exchange, Nakoma.

Your secret is safe with me as long as ours is safe with you.

It's the only way this works.

I tell you, and I'll be able to leave.

Not right away, but yes.

In the meantime, you'll reside here, under my protection.

Colorado.

Directly east of Black Ridge Mountain.

In the Ute Reservation.

That's where we lived.

Okay, then.

You can stay here in in Irim as long as you like.

With Vera.

But when you leave, that's it.

There's no coming back.

Agreed?

Whatever.

Here's your tube, like I promised.

We'll have to hold on to the darts until you go.

If all that's settled, Vera, I want to begin tomorrow morning.

Will you be prepared in time?

What about my call home?

I was told that.

I'm working on that.

It's not as easy as just picking up the phone.

We have to make arrangements, but it will happen.

I promise.

Then I guess

I'll be ready.

Good.

Am I done here?

Nakoma,

I.

I can't imagine what you had to go through, living on your own like that for so long.

I don't need your pity.

There are a lot of people that had to grow up the same way.

Still,

I'm sorry.

Thanks.

And for what it's worth,

I'm glad you brought Nick here.

Yeah.

Well,

maybe I should have stuck with him.

What are you gonna do now?

I was thinking about waiting until they get fuel for the plane.

Not the one we crashed.

I'll take Vincent's and I'll go home.

Which home?

I'll have to figure that part out.

Can we go back to your room now?

I'm done with today.

Of course.

So, you start your spy training tomorrow.

What's that gonna be like?

I have no idea.

I'm a bit nervous to find out.

As long as I'm still here, you mind passing on a little bit about what they teach you.

Could come in handy.

You're curious now?

They made me give up my way of surviving.

Only fitting they give up some of theirs.

Seems only fair.

Holy shit.

You think they know we're serious now?

Seal, hand me the radio.

Are you still there?

Aww, too bad.

Hello?

You made it, huh?

Well,

lucky you.

Is that all you've got?

Really?

What?

Big bad boar.

Came all the way from Prim just to end up empty-handed.

This is your last chance.

Turn back and go home where you won't be able to.

You little shit.

Level the town.

Aim for the interior of the city.

Don't let them hide any longer.

Ma'am, we're burning through a lot of ammo.

I can always get more from the Republic.

They need to learn.

There ain't gonna be many people left to learn, ma'am.

Good.

You think that's enough already?

Fine.

Cease fire!

Damn.

Well, uh, that'll teach him.

You just don't get it.

Still you.

No way!

Lost.

Hi!

The fuck are you talking about?

Who is this?

Alex Brown Robbins.

That's who the fuck I am.

Why is that name familiar?

That was one of the contenders, right?

Waterworld was Alex?

He was the one that mouthed off to me before the game.

He's supposed to be dead.

But it sounds like the game was rigged from the start.

How?

What the fuck is going on?

Move!

Back, Sniper!

Get down!

Fuck!

Where the hell is that coming from?

There's no rooftop standing!

Shoot them again!

Ma'am!

We only have so many shells left!

I don't care!

Fire!

Hit every elevated position!

Sniper fire is not coming from the town!

Then where the fuck are they?

The tanks are out!

We're dry!

God damn it!

This coming from behind us!

Oh, God, turn everything around!

Turn around!

How the hell are they doing this?

I'll tell you how we're gonna do it.

The tunnel entrance in Hackbury.

That's the other way to get into the Atlas.

Dot?

The one at the bar?

Exactly.

That's where you took my dad and Puck when they were here.

It's still an option, right?

Ah, the subway track isn't working anymore.

It's why I didn't bring it up before.

Could we walk the tunnel?

Might be tricky.

There's countermeasures we'd have to get around, but I mean, it's possible.

Then we funnel everyone through there.

There's no no way the boar would know where we went.

No tracks to follow, and she wouldn't risk going into the town for another ambush.

What she would do is try to soften up the targets.

You'd run her little army dry shooting from the outside.

All the while, we're running people back to the Atlas, arming them, and then sending groups back up through the elevator in the stable.

I have enough munitions down there.

This could work.

And we have a lot more people than her.

The refugees are exhausted, but given the chance to go against the boar, I'm sure they'll take it.

Uh-huh.

This is our best option.

We go under the boar to get around, and we hit her from behind.

But we have to make it to Hackbury in time.

And the boar has to take the bait.

Oh, she will.

I'll make sure of it.

Why would you want to add any more?

This is your last chance.

Come out of the city with your hands up.

Hurry up.

Come on.

Move, move, move.

Well,

what about a counteroffer?

Oh, this is going to be rich.

We're bartering now.

You think you're in a position for that?

Alex,

we almost got everyone inside and down into the tunnel.

Moving them as fast as we can.

Dot, go with the others.

I'll meet you at the elevator.

Dot?

I'll be fine.

Go!

I need to keep pushing her further over the edge.

Good luck.

You two.

Go home.

Take your tanks and animals, whatever the fuck you brought with you, and go back to Prim.

Leave now, and we'll let you live.

Oh,

that's gonna do it.

She's not gonna like that.

You have got to be kidding.

This is a joke, right?

You're not holding any cards right now.

You have nothing.

Okay, okay.

Get down to the lower level.

Move now.

Go on.

Then why don't you come in here and find out?

That's not going to happen.

Off and puff all you want, little piggy.

You're not getting in.

Everyone's through, Alex.

Come on.

Okay, get ready.

Here it comes.

Oh, shit!

The kid!

Alex, he's still in the bank!

Grit, go!

I'll get him!

Stay there!

Stay there!

I'm coming!

I had to go, Pauli, and then the horse ran off.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

It's okay, I got you.

No!

No!

No!

No!

You can't stay here.

This place is coming down.

The bomb!

I can't.

Get on my back and close your eyes.

Can you do that?

No!

I don't know!

Just grab on!

Piggyback!

Okay, piggyback!

Okay, hold on.

I got you.

Okay, okay.

Hold on.

Buddy, not in my ear.

Okay?

Hold on!

Hold on!

Oh, God!

Don't judge!

Close the tunnel door!

Won't be able to get out through the bar now.

Cutting it a little close, don't you think?

You okay, Gus?

I'm okay.

Hey, Grant, you mind looking after him?

Stick with me, okay, kid?

I'm not going anywhere else, I promise.

I need to catch up with Gloria and the others.

Alex!

Oh, you made it.

I was starting to get worried.

I went as fast as I could.

The tunnel was pretty long, and I had to make my way through the Atlas.

But everyone got inside just in time.

Whoa.

Okay.

yeah, don't worry about me.

I'm I'm fine.

Still a little nauseous from the earlier been shelling the town off and on for about 15 minutes now.

She sure is pissed.

I knew she would be.

Can't see us from back here.

This is perfect.

All right, next team, move forward.

Join the others.

Don't shoot it till I do.

Quiet.

Quiet.

Hello?

You made it, huh?

Well,

lucky you.

Is that all you've got?

Really?

Big bad boar.

Came all the way from Prim just to end up empty-handed.

This is your last chance.

Turn back and go home, or you won't be able to.

You little shit.

Keep moving up.

Let them burn through whatever ammo they can, right?

They have no idea we're behind them.

Keep it that way.

Don't let them see us.

Stay below the sandberm.

The refugees are armed.

They're ready.

And itching for payback.

Hey, hey, you in the red hat.

Yeah.

Head to the stable and direct the next two groups from the elevator to go left and right.

Flank them.

Okay, I'll go tell them.

No

more.

It's working.

They're running out of shells.

But they could always have a little less.

You just don't get it.

Do you?

You've lost.

The fuck are you talking about?

Who is this?

Alex Brown Robbins.

That's who the fuck I am.

Uh-oh.

I think that one in the back just spotted us.

Can you shoot them from here?

Oh, I guess I can.

Oh shit, there's another

Got him.

They can't tell where it's coming from.

Keep it up.

I'm on it.

Out.

They out.

They're gonna see us real soon.

Now or never.

Charge!

What the hell?

Where are they coming from?

And where the hell did they get all these guns?

Turn the tanks around!

God damn it, run them over if you have to!

Back up, back up!

Bullets off!

No!

Look!

That was too close!

More on our flank!

How is this happening?

I don't know.

Tell the tanks to fire!

They can't.

They are out of rounds.

I told you!

We're getting out over here real fast!

You've been trained for this!

They're only workers!

Push them back!

Too worried!

They've surrounded us!

We need to get the hell out of here!

Fuck this, fuck this!

I am gone!

Damn it again.

Come on.

This

is impossible.

Ma'am, I know you don't want to hear this, but we got to go.

They're closing in fast.

Our window is shrinking.

It's now or never.

You know what they would do to you if they capture you?

Fine.

Get me out of here.

Retreat back to Prim.

Give the call.

What about Seal?

He's done.

Please, no, I'm begging.

You believe him.

Jackal, please, come on, man.

I don't want to die out here.

Mount up.

Get out of here.

I don't want to die out here, Jacko, please.

You heard her.

We gotta go.

Come on, Leon.

Leon, please.

God damn it.

Fuck it.

You two.

Grab Seal and take him to your truck.

Come on.

Go, go, go.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Going!

The Borse trucks are starting to run.

They're falling back!

Tell the others to stop coming up the elevator.

They can't discover the source as they retreat.

Stop coming up the elevator.

Don't let them see you.

We won.

I can't believe it.

Nice work, kid.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Oh, whoa.

Okay.

Only lost my footing.

Uh I'm just really tired.

Are they they're leaving?

Wait, where's the little kid?

Gus,

you didn't know what I found a safe spot for him down there in the Atlas.

Poor little guy, he fell asleep.

He was exhausted.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

This is about as much as I've done all year.

Or years.

Tired.

Me too.

But we're not done yet.

We still need to tend to the wounded in the attack.

Not to mention those who were injured while coming here.

Oh, Jesus.

Look, the Atlas is overflowing.

It's gonna take a lot to get it all back up again.

And to support this many people.

Oh, you have help, though.

I mean, we have some engineers in the bunch.

Farmers.

They help build Prim.

I'm sure they'll be able to do the same for you here.

You're not gonna be without problems.

But we'll figure them out.

They're safe now.

We all are.

Oh,

I'm I'm okay.

Ah!

No, you're not.

You've got a concussion.

We need to get him inside.

Oh, got you.

Alex says he'll be fine.

I know a bit about treating this.

Got my head knocked around real hard filming a really intense fight scene for Darkfears 4.

Is that what's wrong with you?

Funny, kid.

Real funny.

Or

back?

Do I think they'll be back?

I don't know.

If she can ever find us,

one thing's for sure:

the boar is gonna be pissed.

That was a fucking disaster.

It's all right, ma'am.

We've made it home, at least.

Jeez, Fran looks deserted.

They think this is over.

It's not.

We'll gather up the rest of the animals and return.

I will not let them just walk away so easily.

If I did, I'd never be able to...

rebuild rebuild this place.

Ma'am, where is everyone else?

Are they inside the barn?

It doesn't look like anyone's in there.

Radio check.

We are back in Prim.

What's the status?

We left half our forces behind.

They should have been able to retake the city.

I don't hear nothing.

No gunshots.

I that.

It ain't secure.

Get back in the truck.

Right, get inside the bar.

Jackal, in here,

Jackal.

I thought you didn't make it.

We need to get to my penthouse.

We'll be safe there.

Did you see the infected's eyes?

What the hell is going on?

What?

What is it?

They were completely black.

I never seen that shit before.

You're bleeding.

Are you?

Your eyes.

You too.

Oh no.

I'm sorry, Jackal.

No,

no, ma'am.

No, please.

No, no, no.

No.

I'm so sorry.

My animals.

my prime

Coach, the energy out there felt different.

What changed for the team today?

It was the new game day scratches from the California Lottery.

Play is everything.

Those games sent the team's energy through the roof.

Are you saying it was the off-field play that made the difference on the field?

Hey, a little play makes your day, and today, it made the game.

That's all for now.

Coach, one more question!

Play the new Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, and Los Angeles Rams Scratchers from the California Lottery.

A little play can make your day.

Please play responsibly.

Must be 18 years or older to purchase, play, or claim.
