We're Alive: Descendants - Chapter 14 - Bloodborn - Part 1 of 2
Vera is faced with a truth she never expected, but answers often come with more questions. As she steps deeper into the world of the Families, the weight of legacy, power, and deception begins to take shape. What does it truly mean to be a part of something larger—and what will it cost her?
Meanwhile, Nicholas, Will, and Nakoma struggle to find their way through the Louisiana swamps, but survival isn’t their only challenge. The past lingers, trust is tested, and an unseen force watches from the darkness. As the trio edges closer to their next move, the question remains: are they walking into safety—or something far worse?
18 years after the original STORY OF SURVIVAL, a new generation is forced to grow up in the post-apocalypse. The Infected have evolved into new deadly varieties, and humanity’s efforts to reclaim our lost civilization have put us in conflict with our greatest enemy: Ourselves. Now the countdown begins as the children of the survivors work to make sense of this deadly new world before it consumes them and everything they know and love.

Speaker 13 Chapter 14:
Speaker 3 Bloodborne
Speaker 11 Part One of Two
Speaker 11 My Rame is Oliver Blackburn.
Speaker 11 I'm your father.
Speaker 14 You
Speaker 14 are my dad?
Speaker 11 That's right.
Speaker 15 Speechless.
Speaker 11 That's first.
Speaker 16 Crazy, right?
Speaker 11 Do you mind.
Speaker 14 Are you sure?
Speaker 14 How would I even know if you're telling the truth?
Speaker 16 Well, there's a slight resemblance.
Speaker 17 It's the nose, right?
Speaker 11 Vera, you were born on March 26th, 2011.
Speaker 11 There couldn't be anyone else. Your mother didn't tell you about me or any of this?
Speaker 14 I found a name on a letter once, but no, she never did.
Speaker 14 Okay.
Speaker 11 Why don't you sit back down?
Speaker 11 I know you must have lots of questions. I figured we could discuss them over dinner.
Speaker 11 You've been through so much to get here.
Speaker 3 I'm not hungry.
Speaker 11 Well, you'll be here when you are.
Speaker 17 I so have been looking forward to being back here.
Speaker 16 You so should have never left.
Speaker 18 Why did you leave?
Speaker 3 Me?
Speaker 14 Yes.
Speaker 14 But you, first, Oliver.
Speaker 14 If you are who you say you are, then you left my mother all alone, completely abandoning all responsibility you had to both of us.
Speaker 11
I didn't know about you until much later. Neither CJ nor I had any idea she was pregnant.
And it was never my plan to leave like I did. Everything just happened so quickly.
Speaker 14 Why did you have to go at all?
Speaker 11 So no one told you. You have no idea what I had to do.
Speaker 20 Had to do?
Speaker 14 Yeah, you killed a man and fled.
Speaker 11 My task was to take care of a lying murderer, Simeon Eklund, at the Twin Towers jail.
Speaker 11 That's why I was even in California to begin with.
Speaker 12 And then the outbreak happened.
Speaker 11
And everything went to hell. I was trapped in there.
It took everything I had just to escape that place.
Speaker 11 Only a few of us survived.
Speaker 11 And eventually I made my way to the colony.
Speaker 11 And that's when I met your mother.
Speaker 11 Never met anyone like CJ.
Speaker 11 Strong, resilient.
Speaker 11 Only person I would ever worry about going toe-to-toe with.
Speaker 3 We were building a life together.
Speaker 11 Everything was turning out better than I thought was
Speaker 11 Until he showed up.
Speaker 11 Simeon survived the jail as well and killed a lot of innocent people in the process. He would have done far worse at the colony if he was left to his own devices.
Speaker 11 I owed it to the family and everyone there to do what needed to be done.
Speaker 11 But your mom had strict laws in place about harming others.
Speaker 11 I would not have been exempt from those rules.
Speaker 11 You know how she is.
Speaker 14 But there could have been a way.
Speaker 11 I didn't have a choice.
Speaker 11 Staying any longer would have put me at risk. I couldn't let anyone discover who I was.
Speaker 14 Yeah,
Speaker 20 and who are you, really?
Speaker 11 I started out just a member. When I met your mother,
Speaker 11 I was an enforcer. After I returned, I became the head of the Blackburns.
Speaker 11 Now,
Speaker 11 I am the patriarch of all the families.
Speaker 16 That means he's the boss.
Speaker 14 You're in charge of all of this?
Speaker 14 What even is this?
Speaker 14 What are families? Why do you even call yourselves that? Why am I here?
Speaker 11 Well, I guess I'll start with the easy one. The family, or families, are nicknamed that in case anyone overheard something about us they weren't supposed to.
Speaker 11 Everyone has a family, so it's an easy cover.
Speaker 14 So you're not really blood-related?
Speaker 11 Well, actually, a good amount of us are. Various marriages and direct lineages trace all the way back to when we were founded.
Speaker 11
Who we are and what we do has to remain a secret, so trust is essential for us. Blood ties are usually the strongest bond.
Being my daughter gives you that connection.
Speaker 16 Wouldn't guess by looking, but Oliver and I are actually second cousins.
Speaker 17 But we do have multiple different households and last names. You're making it sound like we're inbred.
Speaker 3 Well, you might be.
Speaker 7 Hey, she's joking.
Speaker 17 That's not a thing
Speaker 11 anymore.
Speaker 14 So, you're like some high-class mob or secret society?
Speaker 17 Oh, come on now, that just makes it sound cheap.
Speaker 11 Admittedly, there are some similarities. The mafia arose in Italy during the Middle Ages, dedicated to overthrowing foreign conquerors.
Speaker 11 They were formed out of a need to maintain order under lawless conditions. And in a way, we did the same thing here in the early days of the United States.
Speaker 3 Jeez.
Speaker 14 How long have there been these families?
Speaker 3 A long time.
Speaker 11 These four were our founders. Emmanuel Amsell, Mary Beth Blackburn, Terrence Chisholm, and David Dawson.
Speaker 14 Why are there paintings of only three of them?
Speaker 11 Well, I'll get to that.
Speaker 11 The original families, they all saw the opportunities at the birth of our new nation and began organizing just before the start of the Revolutionary War.
Speaker 17 Here comes comes the history lesson if I wasn't already half asleep.
Speaker 15 Oh, you shut up.
Speaker 16 I never get tired of the story.
Speaker 11
There were a few well-known societies that played their part in our nation's founding. The Sons of Liberty, the Freemasons.
Now, they're already fairly well-known.
Speaker 11 But those were individuals who wanted the spotlight, to become part of the history books, the politicians that tried to make a name for themselves.
Speaker 11 But the real power and control always came from those who remain hidden in the background.
Speaker 11 Our four families figured out ways to collaborate in secret, growing stronger through coordination with one another.
Speaker 11 One of our founders was even involved in the Culper Ring, spies that subverted the British occupation. Another would be responsible for preventing the assassination of high-ranking military officers.
Speaker 11 while the others, Amsul's and Dawsons, would divert supply chains to loyalists. Their combined efforts are one of the reasons we eventually won the war in 1778.
Speaker 14 You've been around since the 1700s?
Speaker 14 You're serious.
Speaker 17 We even have a few artifacts from the Revolution scattered around the house.
Speaker 16 You walked by one on your way here.
Speaker 14 It's just hard to imagine that you've been around that long and no one has noticed.
Speaker 16 Not without sacrifices.
Speaker 17 And some people have come close.
Speaker 11 We've only been able to keep ourselves a secret by working together, establishing simple and firm rules, and maintaining a strict balance.
Speaker 11 Inevitably, when one part of the family would have to get their hands dirty, another would find a way to make them clean again.
Speaker 17
Look, dinner was getting cold. I'm starving.
You know how long it's been since we last eat?
Speaker 11 There's still a lot more to discuss, but Chef did prepare this specially for your arrival. It would be a shame to let it all go to waste.
Speaker 3 Oh my god.
Speaker 17 I know, right?
Speaker 11 You still not hungry, Vera?
Speaker 10 I'm.
Speaker 14 I'm having a hard time accepting this. And you.
Speaker 14 Do you know how many nights I lied awake, lost in my own head, wondering why you would leave us or who you even were?
Speaker 17 Bet you were never expecting any of this, huh?
Speaker 3 Shush.
Speaker 14 Hearing all this now may answer a lot of my questions, but
Speaker 14 it doesn't begin to erase any of the pain.
Speaker 11 I can't tell you how many times I rehearsed what I would finally say to you, if or when we ever met.
Speaker 11 To try and explain all the reasons why I was never there for you in the ways I wanted to be.
Speaker 11 But now that you're here,
Speaker 11 I'll finally have that opportunity. If you let me.
Speaker 11 There's no way I can ever expect to reverse the years of damage overnight.
Speaker 11 But I'd like to try and make things better.
Speaker 11 I only ask that you don't close me out. Or turn your back on the opportunity to know what this all is.
Speaker 11 And keep an open mind to who we truly are.
Speaker 11 Would you at least give this a chance?
Speaker 11 I
Speaker 14 might be able to do that.
Speaker 11 Thank you.
Speaker 11 Now I know you have to be starving. Please.
Speaker 3 It does smell good.
Speaker 16 Oh, yeah, it is.
Speaker 11 Life here definitely has its rewards.
Speaker 11 This is only the beginning.
Speaker 11 Welcome home, Vera.
Speaker 7 Here, here.
Speaker 17 I'll drink to that.
Speaker 3 Okay.
Speaker 18 I still can't find a way through to the house yet. There are traps everywhere.
Speaker 9 Yeah, someone's trying real hard to keep us out.
Speaker 20 Well, not just us.
Speaker 3 Those things, too.
Speaker 9
Fuck it. Set off the traps.
I need to get in there already.
Speaker 18 Some are lethal.
Speaker 19 This one's covering a bit of spikes below.
Speaker 18 You really want to rush through and get get stuck in that.
Speaker 10 And I'm sure there's more I haven't found.
Speaker 3 Fine, fine.
Speaker 9 Keep moving.
Speaker 15 There has to be at least one clear path through, right?
Speaker 16 If anyone's in there, they'd have to have a way in and out.
Speaker 22 So we keep circling.
Speaker 16 Eventually, we will find a...
Speaker 9 Oh, shit! Okay, get back, get back.
Speaker 3 Well, that's it.
Speaker 23 That's that's that's definitely a luck breaker.
Speaker 3 Slow, but strong.
Speaker 9 Fuck, fuck. Can we shoot it?
Speaker 23 If you want everyone to know where we are.
Speaker 22 Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit.
Speaker 3 All right, all right, move this way.
Speaker 9 Stay ahead of it. Hopefully, there's.
Speaker 3 Another one.
Speaker 9 Your darts used him.
Speaker 3 I don't have many left. And look at the skin.
Speaker 23 It won't go through anyway.
Speaker 4 Shit, shit, shit, shit.
Speaker 9 All right, all right, back out. Turn around.
Speaker 9 We're so damn close.
Speaker 4 That was delicious.
Speaker 11 Tell chef thank you from all of us.
Speaker 14 Is everyone here part of the family?
Speaker 17 Not the staff, their associates.
Speaker 14 Why would they be working for you if they're not members?
Speaker 16 A lot of benefits, protection, or financial. It may not look like it, but they live better than most.
Speaker 22 So, this Mary Beth Blackburn, she's like my great-great-grandmother.
Speaker 3 Mm-hmm.
Speaker 16
A lot of greats. And she really was pretty great.
We come from good blood.
Speaker 14 So you and I are like third cousins?
Speaker 16
Yeah, I kinda get lost in all those seconds, thirds, or twice removes, whatever. But we had the same great-grandpa.
Practically twinsies.
Speaker 17 Why don't you tell her your real name?
Speaker 16 She doesn't need to know that.
Speaker 11 Okay, Darai.
Speaker 14 Darai?
Speaker 16 Yeah, that's only because my daddy wanted to keep the lineage of the name.
Speaker 16 I'm the fourth Darai, Blackburn. Just keep it to fingers.
Speaker 14
Such a unique name. It's weird, though.
I think I remember someone else named Derai.
Speaker 16 Really?
Speaker 16 Wait, what'd you hear about them?
Speaker 14 Can't remember from where exactly, but it just sounds familiar.
Speaker 14 If you're the fourth, there must be others around?
Speaker 3 Not exactly.
Speaker 16 I'm the only one left.
Speaker 11 We lost a lot of members members during the outbreak in 2009, and the years following.
Speaker 11 The family has had to consolidate. Iram is the only residence in use now.
Speaker 11 There were three, but the other two are currently vacant. All three households have to operate from here now.
Speaker 14 So there's one family, but three households?
Speaker 14 How does that even work?
Speaker 11 Well, each plays a special role. It's part of how we stay hidden and maintain a careful balance.
Speaker 11 See, the AMS here are the political influencers seen in public more than anyone else. Ambitious, charismatic, intelligent.
Speaker 11 They protect the other families by holding positions of power where they can remain clean.
Speaker 16 Yeah, like they never do any of the messy work.
Speaker 7 Yeah, kind of uppity about it, too.
Speaker 9 Right.
Speaker 11
Then on the opposite side of the spectrum are the Blackburns. Adaptable, disciplined, self-reliant, committed, observant.
The ones that always remain in the shadows. My household.
Speaker 14 How is that not surprising?
Speaker 11 We rely on our anonymity to get into places that others can't, and specialize in acquiring information that isn't meant to be known.
Speaker 14 Spies and thieves.
Speaker 17 Oh, boy, she's got you pegged.
Speaker 16 Hey, hey, watch it.
Speaker 11 I mean, sure.
Speaker 11 You could look at us that way.
Speaker 14 I'd add liars to that list, too.
Speaker 11 Regardless of the household, everyone here has had to lie at some point to keep all this from being known.
Speaker 12 Yeah, but you are better at it than most.
Speaker 16 That just leaves your people.
Speaker 17 Someone's gotta get their hands dirty to balance you all out.
Speaker 16 What do you have to say about us?
Speaker 11 A great many things.
Speaker 11 Lastly, and certainly not least, are the Chisholms.
Speaker 11 Versatile, relentless, cunning, experienced, perfectionists,
Speaker 11 and often hold a lack of conscience.
Speaker 3 Hmm.
Speaker 11 Like Vincent said, they tend to deal with some of the darkest sides of the family duties. Things that require rougher skills or attention.
Speaker 11 Sometimes handling people that need to be dealt with.
Speaker 14 That makes a lot of sense.
Speaker 7 You left out charming.
Speaker 16 And it also apparently comes with a certain amount of ego as well.
Speaker 11 It's deserved.
Speaker 17 The messes we've had to get you all out of, please.
Speaker 11 Now, there are some variations and exceptions. Like each family has their own enforcer.
Speaker 11 And most of the last names in their lineage have changed over time between marriages. Really, most of us go by aliases in public anyway.
Speaker 11 But that's everyone who makes up the family.
Speaker 14 And they all live here?
Speaker 11
Don't know. Many are scattered out in the world, operating autonomously, checking in when they can.
Only a small group live here at Iram.
Speaker 11 And this residence is actually...
Speaker 7 Ours.
Speaker 17 Those under the Chisholm's house.
Speaker 16 Iram means Wrath, if that gives you any hints about the type of people they are.
Speaker 3 You complain now, but. Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Speaker 14 That's three. What about the missing portrait? You said there were four to begin with.
Speaker 11 The other three didn't agree with how the Dawsons were operating.
Speaker 16 They deserved to die out.
Speaker 17 They were mainly involved in
Speaker 17 indentured servitude.
Speaker 16 Just say it.
Speaker 16 Slave trade.
Speaker 11
Our households firmly established rules about that practice. They didn't want to follow.
It was one of the few times things got bloody between us.
Speaker 14 Is that what this painting is?
Speaker 3 Are they dueling?
Speaker 16
Oh. It used to be a very old family tradition.
Last time it happened was against the Dawson's head of household. Dawson lost.
Speaker 11 And like that, their branch of the family tree was dissolved. Root and stem.
Speaker 11 Well, over 150 years ago, things changed a lot after that.
Speaker 16 It needed to.
Speaker 17 Outside of vendettas, it was one of the few times a family member was ever allowed to kill another.
Speaker 14 Vendettas?
Speaker 17 Um.
Speaker 17 You want to respond to this one?
Speaker 11
We protect the lives of our family members. It's one of our core values.
And if ever a life is taken from us, a vendetta is established. And we cannot move on until it has been resolved.
Speaker 14 Which means you murder someone.
Speaker 3 Right?
Speaker 16 That sounds harsh. There's a bit more to it.
Speaker 11 My last vendetta was for Simeon Eklund at the jail, who I already told you about. He not only killed two of our cousins, but he then proceeded to slaughter more innocents.
Speaker 11
People I would consider friends. I had to make things right, even if it cost me dearly.
Had to? It's how we always worked.
Speaker 11 How would you react? What would you do if some thug killed your friend in cold blood? Or do you even know?
Speaker 11 I hope you never have to be in that position.
Speaker 3 And what if you were wrong?
Speaker 14 Or made a mistake?
Speaker 16 We make sure.
Speaker 11
Vengeance isn't random in the family. There are strict rules against anything unsanctioned.
As much as we've had bad dealings in the past, we still strive for the greater good.
Speaker 16 Heavy, right?
Speaker 17 I thought you were going to ease Vera in, not dump all of it on her at once.
Speaker 11 That was.
Speaker 11 This is only the start.
Speaker 11 Every bit is important to fully understand who we are and why we do what we do.
Speaker 14 And the reason you can tell me all of this now
Speaker 14 is because I'm one of you too.
Speaker 14 Since I'm blood.
Speaker 16
But you're more than that. Like I said, you're royalty.
Practically a princess.
Speaker 17 You mean technically?
Speaker 3 Shit.
Speaker 16 If you'll excuse me, I gotta go take care of this.
Speaker 11 I often debated whether or not to try to find a way to tell you before, when you were in Westport.
Speaker 11 But I knew your mother wouldn't want you to have any part of this.
Speaker 11 Given what's happened, and what could come next,
Speaker 11 I thought it would be best to give you a choice.
Speaker 3 What do you mean?
Speaker 14 What choice?
Speaker 11
To become one of us. To learn, to train, to find your place in the family.
And if you succeed,
Speaker 11 receive a ring of your own.
Speaker 14 Given what I've seen of your members so far, I don't know if I'd really want that.
Speaker 17 Because of me?
Speaker 7 Hey, I pulled you out of prim.
Speaker 14 Away from my friends, taking me even further from my home against my will, betraying my trust. Why would I want to be more like you?
Speaker 9 You don't understand how lucky you have it, do you?
Speaker 11 Vincent, you mind if I speak with Vera alone?
Speaker 17
Whatever. She's in your hands now.
I'm exhausted. I'm going to bed.
Speaker 11 Look, Vera, I know this wasn't the best way for us to be introduced. Especially with how Vincent brought you on the plane.
Speaker 11 Honestly, I didn't know you were even coming until he sent us a message a few hours ago. But it doesn't change the fact of how grateful I am that you are here.
Speaker 11 Keeping an open mind, right?
Speaker 14 Do you know what's going on at home? My real home, Westport.
Speaker 11 Well, a few things here and there.
Speaker 14 Are they being attacked? Is my mom okay? Did my friends make it back?
Speaker 11
As far as I know, your mom is just fine. There have been some incidents, but Westport is secure and in a holding pattern.
Nothing's happened since the train attack.
Speaker 14 And my friends?
Speaker 11 After you left Prim, there hasn't been much information on that place.
Speaker 11 So, I'm sorry.
Speaker 11 I have no idea where they might be.
Speaker 4 They're still back there.
Speaker 9 The Amukbreakers aren't giving up.
Speaker 23 With as much noise as those two are making, we might as well just shoot them.
Speaker 9 Not yet, but you're right. We have to think of something.
Speaker 23 What about the traps?
Speaker 23 Can't we use one of those?
Speaker 9 I mean, would they even do any good?
Speaker 23 Amoks seem like big trolls.
Speaker 23 Not much is stopping them, but with the gravity of the fall into the pit with the spikes, that'll use their mast against them.
Speaker 9
Spike pit. Spike pit.
Will, that was all you needed to say, man. Where was that again?
Speaker 23 Over here, it was over here. Is it big enough for both? I guess we'll find out.
Speaker 9 Here, here it is.
Speaker 3 Cover the whole backup.
Speaker 23
Get behind the tree. Watch your step.
We'll still need to flush them this way.
Speaker 9 Alright, make room, make room, get in tight. They have to come directly at us.
Speaker 18 Oh man,
Speaker 18 this is gonna be close.
Speaker 23 Our backs are to the other traps.
Speaker 9 We're not gonna have any place to run if at that point you open firework, okay? Aim for the soft spot under the neck, like my grandma said.
Speaker 9 Shit.
Speaker 11 Does it see the pit?
Speaker 16 I don't know.
Speaker 3 No, no, no, no. No! Hey, Agly, go around! Over here! Come on!
Speaker 23 Nice shot!
Speaker 3 Oh, yeah.
Speaker 9
Yeah, yeah, yeah, grab another rock. It's working.
Keep pissing it off.
Speaker 3 Just a little further. Eat me.
Speaker 3 Right in the eye. Oh, you really pissed it off now.
Speaker 3 Ah! Ah! There it goes!
Speaker 9 Yes! One down.
Speaker 9 All right, next one coming.
Speaker 3 Oh, shit.
Speaker 9 It definitely saw the pit.
Speaker 3 This one's not dumb.
Speaker 3 Oh, oh, no.
Speaker 23 We need to find another hiding spot to spot.
Speaker 9 Yo! Nice shot!
Speaker 3 Good job, Nakoma!
Speaker 16 That wasn't my knife.
Speaker 3 Oh, don't look at me.
Speaker 16 Don't move an inch, or I'll drop you just the same.
Speaker 4 Weapons on the ground.
Speaker 23 Now!
Speaker 23 Fuck.
Speaker 21 I didn't even see her.
Speaker 9 Me, neither.
Speaker 16 Wasn't hard with as much noise as you were making. I- No, I see you reaching for your little tube.
Speaker 23 Drop that too.
Speaker 23 Damn it.
Speaker 16 Okay, does anyone else want to try something? Is that all the weapons you have on you?
Speaker 3 Yep.
Speaker 11 That's it.
Speaker 5 Good.
Speaker 16
Now go. Head back to wherever you came from.
This land is occupied.
Speaker 15 Without her guns?
Speaker 9 I'm not going anywhere.
Speaker 16 Nick, is that... We always handle your little intrusion in other ways.
Speaker 20 You already opened up a hole.
Speaker 16 We can keep filling it.
Speaker 4 I'm here for Vera.
Speaker 16 For who?
Speaker 9
I know she's in there. Probably with that asshole, Vincent.
You know him?
Speaker 9 Something tells me that you do.
Speaker 4 Don't you move.
Speaker 9 He took her from us. I'm here to get my friend back.
Speaker 9 And you know what? And no swamp-infected, snare traps, or little knives are gonna stop me from doing that.
Speaker 16 God damn it.
Speaker 13 Descendants will continue after a word from our sponsors.

Speaker 3 Coach, one more question.
Speaker 6 Play the new Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, and Los Angeles Rams Scratchers from the California Lottery.
Speaker 7 A little play can make your day.
Speaker 6 Please play responsibly. Must be 18 years or older to purchase, play, or claim.
Speaker 3 It's third down.
Speaker 11 Did you see the game last night? Of course you did, because you used Instacart to do your grocery restock. Plus, you got snacks for the game, all without missing a single play.
Speaker 11
And that's on multitasking. So we're not saying that Instacart is a hack for game day, but it might be the ultimate play this football season.
Enjoy $0 delivery fees on your first three orders.
Speaker 11 Service fees apply. For three orders in 14 days, excludes restaurants.
Speaker 13 Instacart, we're here.

Speaker 13 And now we continue with Descendants.
Speaker 11 I admire the loyalty to your friends, putting them before your own aspirations and potential. But wanting to go back there, to help,
Speaker 11 I don't think you fully understand the opportunities we're offering here.
Speaker 14 That I'd become one of you.
Speaker 18 So what?
Speaker 22 Why would I want that?
Speaker 14 What would that even mean?
Speaker 11 Well, like I said before, protection, resources, training.
Speaker 14 Westport already offers all of those to me as a guardian.
Speaker 11 Well, not like this, they don't. We have deep connections, and what you learn here is definitely not standard military procedures.
Speaker 3 So,
Speaker 20 what does that mean exactly?
Speaker 11 Ah, I knew that would pique your interest.
Speaker 14 I just want to know what would be different.
Speaker 11
How to manage this world in ways you never thought possible. Dealing with those infected out there, that's relatively simple.
But people, that takes an entirely different set of skills.
Speaker 11 You need to know how to get into the heads of those around you, understand what motivates them, what their vulnerabilities are.
Speaker 11 How to lie, when to lie, and to know when you're being lied to. Tactical driving, flying, boating, and all sorts of transportation that might help you escape a dangerous situation.
Speaker 11 How to get into places that you're not meant to go, bypass locks or alarms. Learning how to blend in, disguise yourself, and if you ever needed to, disappear.
Speaker 11 And that would be just the start.
Speaker 14 I would be trained in all of those skills. Here, you would teach me?
Speaker 11 Among others, when you're born into the family, you normally start this process young. Some of us have been mastering these abilities our entire lives.
Speaker 11 I honestly never really used most of these skills until the old world died. But what I learned from the family saved my life many times over.
Speaker 11 You should take advantage of all we have to offer, especially if events continue on the path they're going.
Speaker 14 Like what?
Speaker 14 You're expecting something worse to happen?
Speaker 3 Like a war?
Speaker 11 Maybe.
Speaker 11
Maybe it's something else. It's hard for me to say, but change is coming.
From my position, I hear rumors of what's going on. Whispers from members in the deep pockets.
Speaker 11 Little things by themselves may mean nothing. But together,
Speaker 11 that has me concerned.
Speaker 14 You have spies out there?
Speaker 22 Reporting to you?
Speaker 3 We're everywhere.
Speaker 14 In Westport?
Speaker 11 Well, how do you think I've kept tabs on you from afar for all this time?
Speaker 14 You do have someone there. That's how you know so much.
Speaker 3 Who?
Speaker 14 Who has been spying on me?
Speaker 11 It hasn't just been one person.
Speaker 11
You being born into this family and me in my position as the patriarch unfortunately makes you a target. I only did this to make sure that you were safe.
Who?
Speaker 14 You want me to trust you to understand all this? Then I need to know.
Speaker 11 Their alias was the Mullen family.
Speaker 1 All three?
Speaker 1 We...
Speaker 14 Dean is one of you?
Speaker 11 Technically, he's not a full member, but still part of us. You're both considered bloodborn, meaning you haven't earned your rings yet.
Speaker 14 So this whole time, our so-called friends have been spying on us, then sending reports back to you?
Speaker 11 Your mother would never let me come close. What else could I do?
Speaker 9 You said I abandoned you, but I would never do that.
Speaker 23 I was forced to find another way.
Speaker 9 You're my daughter, my only daughter.
Speaker 14 No, stop calling me that.
Speaker 9 Please, Vera, you said you'd give me a chance.
Speaker 14 I've given too many.
Speaker 15 Wait,
Speaker 18 is that
Speaker 18 Nick?
Speaker 18 Nick! Nick!
Speaker 3 Wow!
Speaker 3 Wow.
Speaker 20 How fancy is this place?
Speaker 16 She was taken here?
Speaker 3 Dang. Vera!
Speaker 16 Hands! Now, QI tests.
Speaker 11 Um, ow.
Speaker 3 Now you.
Speaker 3
Wait, wait, wait, wait, really? Well, I mean, why you gotta... Look, we're clean.
We're clean.
Speaker 16 You don't have a choice.
Speaker 3 Oh, boy. Ah!
Speaker 3 Here, whatever.
Speaker 9 You good? now?
Speaker 3 Huh?
Speaker 9 Vera!
Speaker 16
Would you stop shouting? People are sleeping upstairs. Don't go any further.
Wait right here till these are done.
Speaker 9 Where is she? Take me to her now. You better let her go.
Speaker 16 Vera isn't a captive. I told you.
Speaker 9 Yeah. Well, I'll believe it when I- Nick!
Speaker 3 Oh my god.
Speaker 3 Nick!
Speaker 3 I was so worried about you! You you?
Speaker 9 You were worried about me?
Speaker 14 How did you even get here?
Speaker 19 We followed Vincent's plane.
Speaker 3 But
Speaker 3 how?
Speaker 14 Why is Nokoma here?
Speaker 9 Well, she's the only one who knew how to fly.
Speaker 19 And I also wanted to help.
Speaker 3 Don't leave that part out.
Speaker 14 QI tests are clear.
Speaker 9 Yeah, of course they are. I told you they were.
Speaker 3 Always good to hear it anyway.
Speaker 3 Hi, Vera. I'm...
Speaker 21 Will. You remember me from Prim?
Speaker 14 Of course I do. Where's everyone else? Alex, Bert, and the others?
Speaker 9 Well, Alex got the old-timers out. We saw them take off at the airstrip heading back to Westport, and Dot probably went with them, too.
Speaker 3 They made it, thank God.
Speaker 3 What the hell are you wearing?
Speaker 4 Is that a dress?
Speaker 20 What the hell were you worried about?
Speaker 16
She seems fine to me. Look, you've had your little reunion.
Now isn't the best time to...
Speaker 11 What are these people doing here?
Speaker 16 Caught them outside the perimeter, sir. Apparently, they followed Vincent's plane here.
Speaker 11 All the way from Prim?
Speaker 12 Are you serious?
Speaker 20 It wasn't easy.
Speaker 9 Where is Vincent, actually? I got a few bones to pick and break with that guy.
Speaker 11 No, you don't.
Speaker 3 Look, whatever.
Speaker 9 She was all that mattered, anyways.
Speaker 3 Vera, come on. Let's get out of here.
Speaker 11 Gladly. No one is going anywhere.
Speaker 9 Oh, well, then you better bar the door because you're not stopping us.
Speaker 11 If it comes to that.
Speaker 3 Uh-huh. Yeah.
Speaker 9 And who the hell is this guy?
Speaker 3 Oliver Blackburn.
Speaker 11 I'm Vera's father.
Speaker 3 Wait.
Speaker 4 What?
Speaker 9 That's bullshit.
Speaker 16 Family drama? You don't know the half of it.
Speaker 21 I am so confused right now.
Speaker 9 Who are you two exactly?
Speaker 21 Uh, hi, uh, William Walden. I-I lived in Prim.
Speaker 19 Nakoma Birch.
Speaker 16 From the same sort of.
Speaker 3 Um, hello?
Speaker 12 What about me?
Speaker 9 Not curious? Pops?
Speaker 3 You?
Speaker 11
You, I already know. That temperament and attitude.
You're Nicholas Tink.
Speaker 3 How'd you...
Speaker 9 Wait, what did you tell him, Vera?
Speaker 14
Nothing. I...
I didn't.
Speaker 3 He's.
Speaker 14 How do I begin to explain any of this?
Speaker 16 Let's just say he knows things. He's in the position to.
Speaker 21 That doesn't make anything clearer.
Speaker 16 There's only so much we can say to outsiders, but you better show him some respect.
Speaker 11 Thank you. That's enough.
Speaker 16 Just want to make sure they know you're in charge.
Speaker 9 You're in charge? Of what?
Speaker 9 Like you got some type of special club or something?
Speaker 11 All that matters is this is our home, and you shouldn't have been allowed in here.
Speaker 16 I'm sorry, sir. They were making a lot of noise outside of the gate, bringing infected in, and then they knew Vera already.
Speaker 12 Yeah, I get it.
Speaker 11 But now I have to find some way to deal with this.
Speaker 4 I already gave you the answer.
Speaker 9 Let us go, and we'll leave you alone. I mean, you walked out on Vera a long time ago, right? Should have no problem with us doing the same thing to you.
Speaker 11 Are you just gonna run off in the middle of the night? In the heart of Louisiana's swamps? You wouldn't even last till morning.
Speaker 9 Yeah, you don't know that. Nick,
Speaker 20 he may be right.
Speaker 11 Why don't you stay in the guest house until morning? By then, I'll have decided what our next steps should be.
Speaker 3 Really?
Speaker 11 Well, these are your friends.
Speaker 3 Right, Farah?
Speaker 11 The ones you spoke of?
Speaker 3 Mostly just Nick.
Speaker 3 Gee, thanks. I get it.
Speaker 12 We barely met.
Speaker 11 Now that you know they're okay,
Speaker 11 doesn't that change your position?
Speaker 3 It
Speaker 21 might.
Speaker 9 What is he talking about?
Speaker 14 Oliver wanted me to come here.
Speaker 21 So Vincent brought Vera to become one of you, that's it.
Speaker 16 Excuse me? We never said.
Speaker 11 Look, it's getting late. Why don't we talk more in the morning? You must be exhausted from a very long day, all that traveling.
Speaker 9 You have no idea what today's been like.
Speaker 16 Not to mention, these people are filthy.
Speaker 3 Vera.
Speaker 11 Look, I don't trust this guy. She is my daughter.
Speaker 12 And you are her friends.
Speaker 11
Which makes you my guests. And you'll be treated like it, with all the amenities we have to offer.
Gourmet meals from our chef, laundry facilities, clean bedding, medical aid, even hot showers.
Speaker 19 I mean, if we have to stay,
Speaker 11 you got a library?
Speaker 16 Did you just hear him say we got a gourmet chef? And Belle here is asking about books?
Speaker 21 I went through practically everything we had in Prim. Would be nice to read something new for a change.
Speaker 11 We have plenty, and you're welcome to them. Not like anyone else here besides me touches them.
Speaker 9 Look, I'm still not buying any of this.
Speaker 19 Does seem too good to be true.
Speaker 21 Tomeo Danios atonafrentis.
Speaker 11 Aeneid. Wow, you weren't lying about your interest in books.
Speaker 18 Yeah.
Speaker 11 I swear, as long as you are in our house, you are safe.
Speaker 16 Well, is that good enough? Can we go to bed finally?
Speaker 14 Nick, I know this all seems crazy, and I'm hesitant too, but they have taken care of me.
Speaker 16
She doesn't look like a captive. Not in that fancy dress anyway.
Thanks. It's mine.
Speaker 3 Um, are we good now?
Speaker 21 Can I use your bathroom? Still not feeling so good.
Speaker 16 The guest house has one, extra clothes to change into, and it's stocked with whatever you might need. I'll take you there and make sure you get settled.
Speaker 14 Nick, are you okay with this?
Speaker 9 You sure that he's really your dad?
Speaker 3 But we don't look alike.
Speaker 18 He is.
Speaker 14 It's complicated. Very complicated.
Speaker 9 I mean,
Speaker 9 Look, only if you say so, Vera.
Speaker 9 You're the only one that I trust here.
Speaker 9 I'm just honestly glad that you're okay.
Speaker 16 Is that it? Can we go?
Speaker 9 You know what?
Speaker 11 No.
Speaker 9 I'm not done. Where are you hiding that backstabbing fuck, Vincent? Where the hell is he at?
Speaker 3 Nick, Nick.
Speaker 11 I've been wanting to bring Vera here for some time. Vincent may not be the most pragmatic, but but he knew it was best to come here.
Speaker 9
Uh-huh. Okay, pops.
I'll be pragmatic right to his face.
Speaker 16
Oh, I want to see that. Let me know when it happens.
But for now, would you just follow me? I need to escort you to the guest house. It's detached from the main building.
Speaker 3
Oh, I really need to go to the bathroom, Nick. All right, all right, all right, all right.
Fine.
Speaker 9 I'll beat Vincent's ass in the morning then.
Speaker 11 I'm sure you will.
Speaker 3 Good night.
Speaker 11 Oh, and Nick,
Speaker 11 I'm very sorry to hear about your father.
Speaker 3 Him?
Speaker 9 Yeah, that's all good. It was a long time ago.
Speaker 11 No.
Speaker 3 I meant Michael.
Speaker 3 What?
Speaker 3 Oh, shit.
Speaker 3 Wait, what?
Speaker 12 What about Michael?
Speaker 9 Michael Cross? We're talking about here?
Speaker 11 You didn't know?
Speaker 9 Oh, God. Wait, what happened then?
Speaker 9 What happened to my dad?
Speaker 11 I shouldn't be the one to tell you this.
Speaker 3 Nick, I.
Speaker 9 Someone tell me something.
Speaker 11 I'm sorry, Nick.
Speaker 15 He died.
Speaker 12 He
Speaker 15 he, what?
