Chapter 13

Coming Home

Part 2 of two.

Can't this thing go any faster?

We've completely lost them on the radar.

I uh

the manual says that this is as fast as it can go.

It's full throttle already, but but that that will decrease our fuel efficiency.

They're in a better plane.

We told you this.

What do you expect?

No, no, no, no, no, no.

Damn it.

The easy, easy now.

We're still on target.

I was tracking their descent, and if I'm right, they're going to be landing in this area here.

Give or take four square miles.

Wait, four miles?

That's not much, okay?

Considering they most likely have to land in an airstrip, we just need to find out which one.

So what?

We just fly around until then?

Well, that might be difficult.

Visibility is going to be low.

It's getting dark fast.

And for however long we have fuel.

Are we running out?

There might be enough in reserve to get us there.

You wanted to go full throttle.

Great.

Anything else?

Yeah, one of you will need to land.

My feeling's coming back, but wouldn't trust my arms just yet.

Then start running us through what we'll need to do to land.

Will, you got this?

Yeah,

don't know if you can trust these hands either.

Nick, hate to say it, but you are today's most capable.

Shit, me,

all this is relying on me now.

You did put us on the plane.

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

Fine, fine, fine.

Fine.

How long do we have?

Less than 45 minutes.

Well, then you guys better get me ready.

And

what?

What now?

There's one last thing.

Based on how fast their plane was going and their trajectory, Vincent and Vera would already be on the ground.

They've landed.

Oof.

All right, we're here.

And where is here?

Good old swamplands of Louisiana.

Bugs the size of your fist.

And mosquitoes that'll bleed you dry.

You're gonna love it.

Hurry up now.

We have to get moving before we lose the light completely.

Fuck you.

I'm not going anywhere.

You drugged and kidnapped me.

That's not.

I'm trying to help you.

That's what you're doing?

Helping?

Why do you think I volunteered to go into the last stadium with you?

Once I found out who you were, I had to protect you.

It's what we do for family.

Found out what?

What is this family you're talking about?

Like I said, yours.

There was no time to explain back in Prim.

This has to be done in person.

Dart's still doing its thing, huh?

You and I are not family.

You don't know anything about me.

I know more than you do, apparently.

In the arena, you and Lisa talked about your dad, Oliver.

It was enough to put the pieces together.

My dad?

Why does he matter?

I've never even met him.

He abandoned us.

Huh.

I wonder how much your mom kept from you.

One of the many reasons I needed to bring you here.

When you're ready, come on down.

We have a ways to go.

Might get a little dicey.

I brought along your katana.

Not really my thing, but you seem attached.

Fortunately, whoever owned this plane had a pretty nice stash of weapons in the cargo hold.

What happened in Prim?

Where are the others?

What did you do?

I didn't really do anything.

Infected got out, whole city went to shit.

Your friends made it to the airport.

Same as us.

We just went a different way.

How far are we from them?

Uh,

about 1,500 miles, give or take.

What?

No.

Why?

Take me back there now.

I want to go home.

You don't get it, do you?

This is so much much more important than all that.

Don't you tell me what's important!

Why would I risk everything to get you here?

The plane wouldn't make it anyway.

Not enough fuel left.

This was a one-way trip.

If it makes any difference, you may be able to call Westport once we get there.

How is that possible?

Where we're going is a bit special.

Been around a while.

We have resources.

I don't understand what the hell you keep talking about.

Who has resources?

Tell me what's going on.

Honestly, I shouldn't really tell you much else yet.

It's kind of how we operate.

But once you're there and find out who you really are, then you can know everything.

Why do I matter?

Haven't you always felt a little different?

Wondered where the other half of you comes from?

So why don't you pick that up and you can finally find out?

What do you have to lose?

What the fuck?

What do you have to lose?

Ah, damn it, Vera.

Don't you understand what I'm trying to do?

What I went through?

You wanna throw all this away?

Never know any answers?

Just to be lost in some swamp?

You are thousands of miles from where you think you want to be.

What choice have you left me?

Stubborn, aren't you?

Oh, damn it.

I need to wrap this.

You cut me deep.

Could have been worse.

What can I say?

Dart's still affecting my arm.

Well, lucky me.

Can you walk?

Barely.

You're not gonna try something else if I turn my back to you?

That's all

for now.

Better not.

I'm too tired to want to fight you right now, anyway.

There's a path north that will take us the rest of the way.

It's a couple of miles, and I don't want to carry you.

I'm starting to feel the toxin finally wearing off.

I can handle myself.

Good.

In that case,

this way.

Okay, look, low fuel, low fuel.

Yeah, thank you, Will.

I may not know much about planes, but I get what a warning means.

I can't see anything out this window.

Just lots of trees and scattered houses and shit.

There's no lights, nothing to get our bearings.

Oh, man.

I think I'm gonna be sick.

Withdrawals or air sick?

Both.

Hey, suck it up, man.

I need you with me for this.

Should we find a field or a highway?

Maybe any place that's flat.

There, I see it.

Big open clearing up ahead.

That has to be the airport.

Hell yeah.

I told you I needed you, man.

All right, now level off.

Run through all the steps like I told you.

Okay, I got it.

Got it.

Got it.

I'll handle the switches.

Nick, you got the.

The six.

The six.

I got it.

All right.

Gears down.

I can't.

I can't see much.

A little more to the right.

There, straighten out.

Yeah, keep that nose up.

I'm trying, I'm trying.

Ease down the throttle nice and steady.

It's coming up.

It's coming up.

Start to bring the sticks towards you.

Ease back down.

Down, down.

I am.

I am.

Pull back on the throttle.

Oh, shit.

Too late.

Break!

Break!

There's no landing here!

We're not on the runway anymore!

I know, I know!

Reverse the clusters!

Well!

Well

at least we're on the ground.

Oh no.

Something tells me this plane's flying days are over.

Hey, um,

what was it that Guardian pilots always say?

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

Grab your gear.

Can you walk yet?

I mostly feel my legs.

Feet are a maybe.

Alright.

Grab on.

I can't.

Can't really carry you, but...

Which arm is the bad one?

It doesn't matter.

Like I said.

Matters to me.

It matters to most people.

It's wrapped, okay?

Now come on.

We have to hurry.

Sorry about that.

Hey, don't be.

You did great well.

I'm proud of you, man.

Oh.

Are you okay?

Are you gonna puke again?

N n no, it's just...

No one's ever said that to me before.

Proud of me.

It's...

Is that strange?

No.

Not for someone from Prim.

We'll work on that, okay?

No, you mind opening the door?

I'm getting a coma.

Okay.

Oh, there it goes.

Patrick was stuck.

Alright, you first, then help me move her out.

Easy.

Help me out, Will.

whoa

wow

well i think he may have touched the runway at some point look oh i i got her

any sign of them

there's another jet over there that has to be theirs right that one's in a lot better shape well considering that was our first time flying we're fucking aces in my book you're here

the right brothers masters of flight

damsters

no uh I don't.

I don't see anyone.

The plane's warm, but not hot.

They must have landed some time ago.

Then hopefully they didn't hear us crash.

Right now, I only care about finding them.

You'll care if we lose the element of surprise.

Right now, Vincent doesn't know we're coming.

Look, if we don't move fast, we'll lose them anyways.

Come on, look on board for anything that might lead us to them.

I think you can let me off for a bit.

You can walk?

A little wobbly, but yeah.

Hey, check the cargo hold of Vincent's plane.

There could be something in there.

Um, this thing right here?

Yeah, pull the handle.

Holy.

Hell yeah.

Weapons, M16, MP5.

Yo, this thing is loaded.

I'll take that MP5 and that knife.

Plane's empty on the inside.

Not a thing left behind.

Shit.

I did find this, though.

Nokoma?

My dark gun, seriously?

You're excited by that?

Not by all of this?

This has more sentimental value.

And also, this is a hell of a lot quieter.

Not that it matters after that landing.

Look, none of this helps us know which way they went.

You guys think there was a car waiting here or something?

They would have had to know they were coming here ahead of time.

Seemed like

all this was kind of last minute, don't you think?

Yeah, you're right.

So so so then they'd be on foot.

So, so look for signs that might tell us where they went

like blood.

I mean, I mean, sure, if there was any, but that'd be right there on the ground.

You got a flashlight or something?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

There's there's one on the right.

You're

you sure that's what that is?

Yep.

Well, can you tell whose it is?

Can you calm down, lover boy?

I just need to make sure

we know

we get it.

Find her

broken record, man.

There's another drop over here.

A few more.

The trail's leading off this way.

Wait,

why would there be blood?

Were they attacked?

Did Vincent hurt her?

I can't tell.

It's not much to go off of, but

they were headed for the trees.

Bingo.

Now this I can work with.

You can?

I was a tracker, remember?

Yeah, how could I forget?

Yeah, Yeah, well, it's gonna come in handy for you now.

Okay, leaves have been disturbed here.

Broken branch up ahead.

Huh?

I can tell where they're going much easier in this environment.

No one else has come through this area in a while.

Should be no problem.

Okay, okay.

Now we're getting somewhere.

Um, there's infected out here,

Yeah, this is this is the red zone.

So yeah,

never been anywhere near this part of the red zone before.

I have no idea what may be out here.

There's a chance that I might

you still have that?

What even is it?

It's my my grandma's journal.

She used to study them out in the field.

Wanted to help people know what they were up against.

And she could only do that because she was immune.

Not exactly.

Being immune doesn't mean they won't kill you.

She put herself at risk to do all of this.

Does it say anything about the infected in this region?

Southeast Red Zone.

Deciduous woodland.

The dominant species in this biome are the muckrakers.

Solitary species and incredibly territorial.

Will lethally defend its hunting grounds even against other muckrakers.

Known for burrowing and hiding just below the surface in the swamplands and ambushing as prey.

Slow, but strong.

As long as you survive the initial attack, you have a good chance of getting away.

Soft hide, usually under the neck, very thick everywhere else.

The older they are, the more resilient their skin becomes.

Resembles something like a cave troll from fictional materials.

Whew.

Okay,

then we watch where we step.

Uh, could those tracks we're following be infected?

No, they're definitely human.

I can tell.

These say a lot.

Weight, height, direction.

But that's not all.

Hmm.

Interesting.

What?

The two tracks here, the way the steps are laid out, they're both moving free, spaced apart.

I I don't get it.

Why does that even matter?

This is Vera and Vincent, I'm sure.

But as far as I can tell, she's not captive or anything.

She's going willingly.

Wait, wait, wait, what?

What?

Why the hell would she be doing that?

Are we even going in the right direction?

We're close, I'm sure.

A few miles, my ass.

Okay, maybe it's a little further than I remembered.

Never had to walk from the airport before

for being so

special.

This family could have chosen a better location.

We're remote for a reason.

Just need to find the right path.

I swear, if you're leading me off to some wait,

freeze.

Don't move another inch.

What?

What is it?

A trap.

One of ours.

How can you tell?

I've had to make them before.

They were once used to keep people away.

Now they're mostly for infected.

What do we do?

Just move backwards, slowly.

And come around this direction.

Good.

Good.

Okay.

I think I found the route through.

We're definitely close to the house.

The house?

That's where you're taking me?

Some cabin in the woods?

Kinda.

But some describe it more like

a mansion.

Whoa.

I know, right?

How does no one know that this is here?

It's as big as a castle.

We have our ways.

It's not that difficult.

Not under any flight path or near any main roads.

And even if someone got past the traps, they'd never get through the gate.

Not without one of these.

A ring?

What's so important about that?

A lot.

Most of the time, it's a status symbol.

But in this case, it's the key.

Literally.

Okay, that's a little weird.

I'd say cool, but that's just me.

Du Does everyone have one of those?

Once you earn it.

What's with the nasty pighead above the gate?

Sort of like an old mascot.

Kind of long story.

Doesn't look like anyone's here.

That's intentional.

Trust me.

Our people are inside, waiting.

I don't like this.

You won't need your katana anymore.

I told you.

You're safe now.

Doesn't feel like it.

If holding that makes you more comfortable, do whatever you want.

After you.

No.

After you.

Descendants will continue after a word from our sponsors.

The lights are on in here, but you can't see anything from the outside.

It's designed that way.

This is.

Wow.

It's something, ain't it?

Like it was pulled out of a fairy tale.

Well, in a way, it is for royalty.

What?

You're here!

Holy shh!

You scared me!

Took you long enough, Vincent.

Do you know what we've been through today?

You could have had a car at the airport?

I wasn't able to get one together in time.

They're all in use.

Maybe, if you'd given us more notice.

What can I say?

I got delayed.

I don't mind you walking,

but for you, my dear, I am very sorry we didn't have better arrangements.

It's a pleasure to meet you.

You wanna put that down, maybe?

Not really.

Vera, this is fingers.

Obviously, a nickname?

Yeah, that would be pretty cruel if it wasn't.

Watch your pockets, hence the name.

Not like I have anything on me.

I know.

I checked.

What?

Hands?

Mine?

QI test time.

You know the drill.

Here.

Now you.

Fine.

Come along.

I already prepped your rooms, working on getting you some clean clothes as well.

Unless you want to keep wearing those god-awful nasty things.

We were given these jumpsuits in prim.

We've been through a lot.

Well, we have plenty of hot water, and chef's preparing a late dinner for afterwards.

How does this make any sense?

It's really cute how she doesn't know.

Right?

Like, I can't even imagine what it'd be like all of this at once.

I was promised answers.

And you'll get them.

Wasn't sure if I was the right person to tell you.

Don't you want to get cleaned up first?

I mean, yes, but I still don't.

I can take that too, if you want.

Your katana would get cleaned and sharpened in the armory.

I'd rather hold on to it for now.

She doesn't fully trust us.

Didn't you say in your message that you drugged her and put her on a plane?

Of course she wouldn't.

Ooh.

You do that to him?

Yeah.

Ow, yes, and I'm gonna probably need stitches.

Well, then you probably deserved it.

Whatever, I'm not taking this.

I did what I needed to.

Now I'm gonna go get clean.

You have no idea how gross this feels.

Here, you can at least take mine to the arms room.

I'm exhausted.

Oh, hey, my offer was for her.

Walk your own happy ass down there.

Thank you.

I appreciate it.

Because it's his house.

He thinks he can do what he wants.

Okay.

You'll understand what that means soon enough.

Hey, Vincent told me I could call home once I got here.

Uh, that that will be tricky, okay?

Not like, you know, picking up the phone in the old days, but I'll ask.

First, and I'm gonna be real honest with you, you know, girl to girl, you should really rinse off.

Yeah, I could smell you both coming through the door.

That's what I'm saying.

Look, all I care about right now is that call.

None of this feels right.

It will.

Gonna take a while to arrange with comms anyway.

One step at a time.

And that first step you need to take is hosing your funky ass down.

Alright, now, this way, your room's upstairs.

My room?

Wait, how many floors are there?

Three above and some more below.

Ask me about those later.

Mine is in the west wing.

I'll see you both soon.

This all seems so crazy.

This is just the beginning.

Any signs of them?

Are we even going the right way?

You sure they went this far into the forest?

I'll pick up the trail again.

Give me time.

Whoa, you see that trailer back there?

It was completely taken over by the trees.

They'll do that.

And the land is taking back over.

The marks we've left here are finally starting to heal.

Speaking of marks.

What?

You found something?

Moss has been scraped off these rocks over here.

It definitely came this way.

This was recent.

How can you even see?

Can you turn on your light?

Do that, and it'll take even longer for our eyes to adjust.

Leave it off.

Okay, fine.

Yeah, she's right.

Just keep a lookout for anything out of the ordinary.

I've never even seen any of these kinds of plants before.

Never even been around this many trees.

I don't even know what would be different.

It's all just making me real nervous around here.

Just stay close, alright?

She knows what to look for.

How are you feeling, Nokoma?

Fine.

Dark completely wore off.

Well, that's good.

Huh.

There's a clearing up ahead, but I don't trust this place either.

Feels off.

What?

Why?

I need to get a better view.

You go right on ahead.

I am so done climbing trees.

Stay down here.

Thank you very much.

You hear that?

Is that normal?

No, no, no, no.

That was definitely weird.

Nakoma, hurry it up, alright?

Give me at least two seconds.

Come on.

You see anything?

What the fuck is that?

Oh, no.

What?

What?

What is it?

It's like a big-ass estate.

Giant brick palace.

Wait, seriously?

Got an outer stone wall?

Huge gate.

Running fountain and everything.

Anyone in there?

Don't see anybody, but...

It's definitely not abandoned.

Someone keeps this place up.

You think that's what Vincent took her?

There's no other place we've seen around here.

This has to be it.

Tracks lead in that direction.

Alright.

Well, hurry up and get down here.

We'll need to figure out the best way to go.

For all of you!

Traps.

No shit.

Well,

don't move.

I'm not.

Nick, you okay?

Yes, but...

Ah.

Damn, I hurt my leg.

Can someone cut me down?

You're lucky that was just a snare trap, not something lethal.

Oh, I am so glad.

Can you please do something for all the blood rushes to my head?

You say so.

Ah,

not exactly what I had in mind.

You're welcome.

Someone made this trap, so there has to be more.

I see another one right now, up ahead.

They're probably all around the perimeter.

We'll have to find another clear way through.

You really okay, Nick?

Yeah, I'll be fine.

I mean, this is a good sign, right?

It means there's gotta be people living here.

Oh, for sure.

This trap isn't that old.

Its trigger was cut recently.

We have to find our way inside.

Who knows what kind of sick shit Bear is going through right now?

Oh my god.

This is amazing.

Relax, it's just me.

Hey, I found something that should be your size.

The outfit's on your bed, and dinner's almost ready.

You don't have to carry that thing around, you know.

Having a big ol' open blade in the bathroom is definitely not the safest idea.

I'm keeping it with me.

Suit yourself.

I hope you like this dress.

It's the best I could do on short notice.

A dress?

No, I'm not wearing that.

Just some pants and a pants?

No, absolutely not.

Not to this.

Why does it matter what I wear?

I don't even know why I'm doing this.

You ever have events in Westport where you had to gussy up a bit?

Someone important around you want to impress?

I'm not here to impress anyone.

I want to get this all over with as quickly as possible and just get back home.

Well, like I said, this is the first step.

Or the second step now.

Jeff prepared special gumbo and even fresh beignets.

The food here is about as good as you're ever gonna get, and I mean that.

We all want to make sure you feel welcome.

And who knows, you may actually start to enjoy yourself.

It is a nice dress.

Yeah, I love that color blue.

It's actually mine, but I think you should have it.

Um,

thanks.

I'll be waiting for you down the hall.

Trust me,

this is going to be a night you'll never forget.

I hate wearing this suit.

It's so itchy.

Well, you lost a little weight.

That was the only one that I could find at fit that wouldn't make you look like you're wearing Big Brother hand-me-downs.

Thanks, but no thanks.

You sure she knows where to go?

Uh-huh.

She should be just another minute.

I told her where the dining room was.

You don't think she left?

I have someone watching the cameras.

She wouldn't get very far.

But I don't think it'll come to that.

I could see it in her eyes.

You sure?

I am.

See?

I was hoping you didn't get lost.

This place is big enough to.

I'm sure it'll happen.

And that

is a big ass table.

How many people are here or live here exactly?

Say told you.

She's dying to know more.

Wow.

You look amazing.

Fuck off.

Can we eat already?

Devil in a blue dress.

Can I take your katana?

I

don't think it'll look good laying across the nice tablecloths.

No, I told you I want it close.

Hey, look, I get it.

Keeping a weapon nearby for comfort.

But maybe you might consider something a little smaller for the occasion?

Like this one?

Easy to conceal in a dress.

Oh.

She just likes to show off her fancy kunai knife.

Bit of a family relic.

You know it.

You carry that around, but still want to take away mine?

And you wonder why I don't trust you, people.

Oh, come on.

I was only playing.

I'm just trying to get you to relax.

That isn't playing.

I'm keeping this with me.

Thank you.

I don't care how it looks.

Suit yourself.

It's not like it would matter anyway.

That katana's big and slow.

It's better to be quick and quiet.

And you are neither.

Stick to picking pockets.

It's what you're good at.

Vincent, don't try me.

I would hate to have to cut a bitch twice in one night.

You're just like him, aren't you?

Like Vincent?

No, absolutely not.

Luckily, no one's like this asshole.

Aw, thank you.

But I will say, being part of the family comes with a certain amount of expectations.

This

being one of them.

Being part of what?

Are you finally gonna tell me?

Can we get this over with?

We're about to.

He's here.

Who's here?

Vera, your seat is in the middle of the dining table on the left.

I don't care where you put your blade.

Just stand when he comes in.

It's a sign of respect.

Who?

Oh, I can't wait for this.

Shh.

But I know me too.

I don't like this.

You will.

Good evening, sir.

Hey, hey, we made it.

I'm back.

What?

It took a lot to get here.

You have no idea.

Look, I don't know who you are, and I I don't fucking care.

I want to go home right now.

And if I have to cut my way out of here, I will.

Vera.

I am so sorry, sir.

She doesn't mean that.

We cannot.

I mean every word of it.

I'm sure you do.

Honestly, I wouldn't have expected anything different.

You really do have so much of your mother in you.

What?

I'm sorry.

I know this is all very sudden and new to you, but I already know so much about you, Vera.

You have no idea how long I've waited for this moment.

That makes one of us.

Have you figured out who that is yet?

No.

I'm the patriarch of the family.

Used to go by an alias years ago, Jeremy.

So?

Is that supposed to mean something to me?

It should,

Vera Zhang.

My real name is Oliver Blackburn.

I'm your father.

Coach, the energy out there felt different.

What changed for the team today?

It was the new game Day Scratchers from the California Lottery.

Play is everything.

Those games sent the team's energy through the roof.

Are you saying it was the off-field play that made the difference on the field?

Hey, a little play makes your day, and today, it made the game.

That's all for now.

Coach, one more question.

Play the new Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, and Los Angeles Rams Scratchers from the California Lottery.

A little play can make your day.

Please play responsibly, must be 18 years or older to purchase, play, or claim.
