Speaker 1 So, I am a big fan of the It movies, and I'd be willing to bet that a lot of you are too.
Speaker 1 Well, there's a new series coming out made by the same director, and it takes place 27 years before the movies in the 1960s. It explores the origins of Pennywise the Clown.
Speaker 1 The new HBO original series, It Welcome to Derry, is now streaming on HBO Max.
Speaker 1 But if you're a real fan like me, you're looking for more, which is why I'm also going to be listening to the It Welcome to Derry official podcast.
Speaker 1 This is where hosts Mark Bernardin and Princess Weeks dive deep into each episode after it airs.
Speaker 1 They talk to the cast and crew, including the show's creators like Andy and Barbara Muscietti about the making of the show.
Speaker 1 And I'm looking forward to what they have to say about the little Easter eggs I'm seeing in the trailer, like the Shawshank State Prison Bus.

Speaker 1 In 1996, the quiet Brazilian town of Verzinha became the center of one of the strangest UFO cases in modern history.
Speaker 1 Nestled amongst the hills of Minas Yerais, Its residents reported encounters with a bizarre non-human creature, an event that would draw global attention, military involvement, and decades of speculation.
Speaker 1 Was it all an elaborate hoax to put this small town on the map, or did something truly extraordinary unfold in a case that would come to be known as the Alien of Virginia?
Speaker 1 Brazil has long been regarded as one of the most active regions on earth for reports of UFOs and unexplained aerial phenomena, second only to the United States in the sheer volume of strange encounters recorded over the decades.
Speaker 1 From the Amazon to the Atlantic coast, accounts of glowing craft, mysterious lights and otherworldly visitors have become woven into the country's cultural fabric.
Speaker 1 Its people, often described as both deeply spiritual and quietly superstitious, tend to take take such matters far more seriously than their American or European counterparts.
Speaker 1 In a land where folklore and faith frequently coexist, the notion of little green men descending from the heavens is not dismissed as easily as it might be elsewhere.
Speaker 1 In Brazil, the extraordinary is often treated with a kind of wary respect.
Speaker 1 Reports of extraterrestrial contact are not the sole preserve of eccentrics or storytellers. They come from farmers, police officers, pilots and entire communities.
Speaker 1 And while sceptics have always argued that these claims can be explained by misidentifications, hysteria or hoaxes, the sheer consistency of the accounts has kept the phenomenon alive in the national consciousness.
Speaker 1 Events of this nature seem to occur here with almost unsettling regularity, and they are rarely subtle.
Speaker 1 Some are fleeting glimpses of light across the night sky. Others, however, are far more intimate and far more disturbing.
Speaker 1 What follows is perhaps the most famous case of all, a series of incidents that would put one small Brazilian town on the global map of UFO law.
Speaker 1 Not only were there reports of a mysterious object seen in the sky, but also of someone or something
Speaker 1 that allegedly survived the crash. The case would become known around the world as the Varzhinya incident.
Speaker 1 It was January 1996 and the mood in the southeastern town of Varzinia was one of quiet optimism.
Speaker 1 The new year had arrived, the Christmas decorations were coming down and preparations for Carnaval were already well underway.
Speaker 1 For most residents, life was good, routine, predictable and comfortable.
Speaker 1 At the time, Varzinha was little more than a prosperous provincial town, nestled amidst the green hills and coffee fields of Minas Yarais.
Speaker 1 It sat roughly midway between São Paulo and Belo Horizonche, a region known for its agricultural exports and growing trade connections.
Speaker 1 Though modern development had begun to take hold, It remained a close-knit community where everyone knew their neighbors and crime was almost unheard of.
Speaker 1 The air carried the scent of coffee beans, the streets were lined with modest stucco houses, and the hum of small industry was just beginning to replace the silence of rural life.
Speaker 1 Still, compared to the sprawling restless cities of Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo, Varzinha seemed an oasis of calm, the kind of place where very little ever happened.
Speaker 1 Children played football in the dusty streets, shopkeepers swept their front steps each morning and the most exciting news often came from the local radio station's weather report.
Speaker 1 But beneath that quiet surface, change was in the air, both literally and figuratively.
Speaker 1 Because on Saturday the 20th of January that year, Varzinha would find itself thrust into the center of one of the strangest and most hotly debated events in Brazil's modern history.
Speaker 1 It would be a day that shattered the town's tranquility and left an indelible mark on the collective imagination of an entire nation.
Speaker 1 What began as an ordinary weekend in a small up-and-coming community would soon give way to something far more unsettling. An encounter that would shake the residents of Vargina to their very core.
Speaker 1 It began in the early hours of the morning on a small farm situated just beyond the edge of town.
Speaker 1 At around 1.30 am,
Speaker 1 a farmhand named Eurico Rodriguez and his partner Aurelina Augusta were jolted awake by a sudden commotion outside their modest farmhouse.
Speaker 1 From the fields came the sound of panic, the bleating of sheep and the deep frightened bawling of cattle.
Speaker 1 The couple who lived and worked on the property were accustomed to the normal noises of livestock at night. But this was different.
Speaker 1 The animals sounded terrified.
Speaker 1 At first, they assumed something ordinary was to blame. Perhaps a stray dog had slipped through the fencing, or a thief had come to steal one of the calves.
Speaker 1 But as they peered out through the window into the darkness, that simple explanation quickly fell apart.
Speaker 1 Suspended low over the pasture was an object unlike anything either of them had ever seen.
Speaker 1 It was described later as a large grey submarine-like craft, roughly the size of a small bus.
Speaker 1 There were no visible lights, no engine noise and no indication of propulsion, yet the object hovered steadily just above the field, its dull metallic surface faintly catching the moonlight.
Speaker 1 Below, the livestock milled in confusion, stamping and colliding with one another as though disorientated by an invisible force.
Speaker 1 The couple watched in silence, frozen somewhere between fear and disbelief.
Speaker 1 Eureko would later estimate that the object remained in view for roughly five minutes, drifting slowly from side to side before ascending and vanishing beyond the tree line.
Speaker 1 When it was gone, the animals gradually settled down. though many continued to shiver and move restlessly for some time afterwards.
Speaker 1 Neither Yuriko nor Aurelina slept again that night.
Speaker 1 When dawn came, they walked the field finding no sign of disturbance, no burn marks, no broken fences, nothing to explain what they had seen.
Speaker 1 Despite the openness with which such encounters were often discussed in Brazil, after some back and forth, they agreed not to report the incident.
Speaker 1 Both were practical, hard-working people, and Eurico in particular saw little point in in attracting attention until he knew what they had witnessed.
Speaker 1 It would take several days for them to realize the significance of what they had seen.
Speaker 1 As word spread through the region of strange lights in the sky and mysterious figures sighted on the outskirts of town, Euriko and Aurelina recognized the pattern.
Speaker 1 Their quiet encounter on that January night was not an isolated event.
Speaker 1 Something extraordinary and deeply unsettling was happening in Varzinha.

Speaker 1 The Silva family lived in the Santana district of Virginia, a modest residential area surrounded by fields and wooded hills.
Speaker 1 Though only 14 and 16 years old, Liliana and Valkyrie Silva were known locally as sensible, dependable girls, the sort who helped at home and rarely caused trouble.
Speaker 1 On the afternoon of the 20th of January, just hours after the UFO sighting at the rural farm outside town, the sisters met up with their close friend Katya Andraji Chavier, a 22-year-old cleaner who worked in the Jaji Minderi district.
Speaker 1 The three of them often walked home together after Kacha's shifts.
Speaker 1 It was partly for safety, the outskirts of town could feel isolated in the late afternoon, but mostly because they enjoyed one another's company.
Speaker 1 On that particular day, they decided to take a familiar shortcut through a patch of rough ground that separated their neighbourhoods, a narrow footpath flanked by scrubland and half-built walls.
Speaker 1 As they passed through a small wooded area near Jaji Minderi, something caught their attention ahead.
Speaker 1 About 10 meters in front of them, crouched near a wall, was a strange figure.
Speaker 1 At first, they assumed it must have been an injured animal, or perhaps even a person hiding.
Speaker 1 But as they drew closer, it became clear that what they were looking at was unlike anything they had ever seen before.
Speaker 1 The creature appeared to be humanoid, yet its proportions were all wrong.
Speaker 1 Its body was thin and glistening, almost oily in texture, with long limbs and dark mottled brown skin.
Speaker 1 Most unsettling of all were its eyes. Large, round and an intense shade of red, glowing faintly, even in the daylight.
Speaker 1 The entity seemed to be trembling or swaying slightly, as though unsteady on its feet.
Speaker 1 For a few seconds, the three friends stood frozen in disbelief. Then the creature slowly turned its head towards them.
Speaker 1 The moment their eyes met, panic set in.
Speaker 1 The girls screamed and bolted back the way they had come. sprinting the entire distance home, without looking back.
Speaker 1 When they burst through the front door of the Silver household, they were hysterical.
Speaker 1 Their mother, Louisa, tried to calm them down, but they were shaking and in tears.
Speaker 1 Liliana in particular was inconsolable, repeating the same word over and over between sobs.
Speaker 1 When Louisa finally managed to ask what had frightened them so badly, The only answer she received was a trembling whisper.
Speaker 1 The devil.
Speaker 1 At first, Louisa Silver dismissed her daughter's story as childish exaggeration brought on by fear.
Speaker 1 But the sheer terror in their eyes and the way their friend Katya trembled beside them convinced her that something serious had happened.
Speaker 1 After a few minutes, she decided to see for herself.
Speaker 1 Accompanied by a neighbor, Louisa retraced the girl's route towards Jarji Minderi, following their shaky directions until they reached the patch of waste ground near the wall.
Speaker 1 The air was still heavy and humid, and the only sounds were the distant buzz of insects and the rustle of grass.
Speaker 1 When they reached the spot described by the girls, they found no sign of the creature.
Speaker 1 However, both women later claimed to have noticed a strong unpleasant odour hanging in the air, a mixture of sulphur and rotting eggs.
Speaker 1 and an area of flattened grass that suggested something had been there.
Speaker 1 Nearby, they also spotted what appeared to be strange footprints, unlike any human or animal tracks they had ever seen.
Speaker 1 Louisa felt a chill run through her despite the heat of the afternoon. Whatever her daughters had seen, it had been real enough to leave a trace, and real enough, perhaps, to still be close by.
Speaker 1 It wasn't long before word of the strange encounter began to circulate through the small community.
Speaker 1 By the following day the story had reached the regional press and before the weekend was over it had exploded onto national television.
Speaker 1 Brazil's most watched Sunday program Fantastico broke the news that an alleged extraterrestrial being had been sighted in Virginia.
Speaker 1 The headline was sensational and it quickly captured the nation's imagination.
Speaker 1 Yet, even before the broadcast, rumours had already begun to spread amongst locals that there had been more than one creature wandering the town that weekend.
Speaker 1 Witnesses spoke of military vehicles seen moving through back streets, of officials in plain clothes ordering residents indoors, and of strange activity in the wooded hills around the edge of the city.
Speaker 1 The atmosphere in Virginia that week was one of unease and speculation. The sense that something extraordinary had taken place, though no one could quite agree on what.
Speaker 1 In interviews given to both press and television, Katya Chavier described in detail the entity she and the Silver Sisters had seen.
Speaker 1 It was, she said, a small, emaciated non-human form with brown glistening skin and an oversized head.
Speaker 1 Most distinctive were the three rounded protrusions that jutted from the top of its skull, perhaps bone, perhaps horn-like growths.
Speaker 1 Its eyes were large and red, and its movements were sluggish, as if it was injured or disorientated.
Speaker 1 The description was both vivid and unsettling, and it became the template by which later witnesses would identify their own encounters.
Speaker 1 Within days, dozens of residents came forward with similar claims.
Speaker 1 Some described seeing figures darting between alleyways. Others reported low-flying objects hovering silently above the outskirts of town.
Speaker 1 In the months and years that followed, more than 200 people would ultimately provide statements describing UFOs or alien entities in and around Varzinha during that week.
Speaker 1 What made the case even more compelling were the whispers from inside the Brazilian military.
Speaker 1 Although officially denied, several individuals claiming to be servicemen later spoke anonymously about the events.
Speaker 1 According to these accounts, a military detachment from the nearby base at Tres Corosues, located roughly 16 kilometers from the town, had been dispatched in response to an emergency.
Speaker 1 The operation, they claimed, involved both soldiers and military firefighters, who had allegedly tracked and captured one or more of the creatures during the night.
Speaker 1 One of these unnamed sources told reporters that the entities were rounded up like wild animals, cornered in the undergrowth and restrained before being loaded onto military vehicles.
Speaker 1 Witnesses who lived near the outskirts of town supported this claim, saying that they had seen unmarked trucks moving through the area after dark, their headlights covered, their engines idling quietly.
Speaker 1 The same source went on to say that when the beings were captured, they emitted a strange droning sound, reminiscent of a hive of bees.
Speaker 1 What became of them afterwards remains uncertain. But some reports suggest that the captives were taken first to the Tres Corosuis base and then transported by road to Brasilia, the nation's capital.
Speaker 1 From there, it is said, they were discreetly flown out of the country, allegedly to the United States, where they were subjected to dissection and analysis.
Speaker 1 Whilst these claims remain unverified, they were given further weight by a rumor that emerged later, that the North American Aerospace Defense Command had issued a warning to its Brazilian counterpart, Syndacter, approximately an hour before the first sighting at the farm.
Speaker 1 According to this version of events, American radar systems had detected an unknown object descending rapidly into the state of Minas Gerais, prompting a quiet alert to Brazilian authorities.
Speaker 1 If true, this would lend credibility to the account given by Eurico Rodriguez and Aurelino Augusta, who claimed to have witnessed a silent cigar-shaped craft hovering above their farm that same morning.
Speaker 1 It would also align with an alleged testimony from a former government official who insisted that a UFO had crash-landed near Tres Cora Suis and that he himself had assisted in a clean-up operation to remove the debris.
Speaker 1 A crash, after all, would provide a far more plausible explanation for why non-human entities were reportedly seen wandering the countryside than the idea that a craft had deliberately dropped them off and flown away.
Speaker 1 And if that was the case, then the incident in Varzinha may represent not just a fleeting encounter, but a catastrophic accident from another world.
Speaker 1 One that Brazilian authorities moved swiftly to cover up.

Speaker 3 Blue sky.
Speaker 1 Some people think nature is like this, but actually, it's like this.
Speaker 1 Mother Nature is not all sunshine and rainbows. Nature can be hotter than a sauna and colder than an Arctic skinny dip.
Speaker 1 That's why Columbia engineers everything we make for anything nature can throw at you. Columbia engineered for whatever.
Speaker 1 Of course, most of these reports are unconfirmed, and it remains difficult to separate what is true from what is fabricated.
Speaker 1 Many of those who came forward did so only after the televised report of the sighting by the three women, leading skeptics to suggest that they were simply jumping on the bandwagon for financial or social gain.
Speaker 1 Yet others maintain that something extraordinary really did occur in Virginia that night, that a craft either landed or crashed, and that the beings described were the survivors of that impact.
Speaker 1 Perhaps best place to answer that question is Ubi Rogaro Rodriguez, a long-term resident of Virginia and coincidentally a part-time ufologist who was living in the area in 1996.
Speaker 1 Since the event, he has worked tirelessly to gather testimony, document new leads, and visit key sites connected to the case.
Speaker 1 Rodriguez quickly became one of the most recognizable civilian investigators associated with the Virginia incident, earning both admiration and criticism in equal measure.
Speaker 1 Working alongside fellow researcher Vittorio Pacaccini from nearby Balo Horizonche, Rodriguez interviewed dozens of locals, including primary witnesses such as Katya Xavier and the Silva family.
Speaker 1 Some of his sources, including individuals allegedly linked to the military, chose to remain anonymous, but claimed to have first-hand knowledge of operations to contain or remove non-human entities from the area.
Speaker 1 It later emerged that in February 1996, only a few weeks after the initial sighting, The Silver household received an unexpected visit from four unidentified men in dark suits.
Speaker 1 The girl's mother, Louisa, returned home to find the men already inside her property, speaking quietly with her daughters.
Speaker 1 According to her statement, the men behaved formally but firmly. They asked the girls to deny what they had seen in the woods, to retract their story and to stop speaking to journalists.
Speaker 1 They offered a substantial sum of money as compensation, but refused to identify themselves or say who had sent them.
Speaker 1 When Rodriguez revisited the area with the family years later in 2003, the sisters were reportedly visibly shaken by the memory of that moment.
Speaker 1 Could this have been the legendary men in black, the mysterious figures so often linked to UFO incidents around the world?
Speaker 1 If Luisa's account is genuine, their appearance in Virginia certainly fits the pattern. an anonymous delegation, a bribe for silence and a warning unrecorded by any official agency.
Speaker 1 The question then is whose orders they were following. Were they part of a covert government operation, an intelligence service or something altogether more secretive?
Speaker 1 To this day, Rodriguez maintains that the men were not local authorities but outsiders, possibly even foreign.
Speaker 1 He noted their distinct lack of regional accent and the way they avoided direct eye contact, describing their behaviour as calculated, almost rehearsed.
Speaker 1 He also found it curious that none of the neighbours remembered seeing the black vehicle the men allegedly arrived in, suggesting they may have been driven in via the service roads behind the Silver Residence.
Speaker 1 Rodriguez's investigation wrestled with several key problems.
Speaker 1 How had the supposed extraterrestrials managed to move around the city without mass public exposure?
Speaker 1 How were they captured by the military and removed without photographs, video or physical evidence surfacing?
Speaker 1 His conclusion was that many people may have seen something, but that each had only witnessed a fragment of the event. A military convoy here, a strange figure there, never the full picture.
Speaker 1 Not all of Rodriguez's claims were universally accepted. Some critics accused him of sensationalism, pointing to inconsistencies in early reports.
Speaker 1 One particularly controversial assertion was that the autopsies of the captured beings were carried out by Dr.
Speaker 1 Badan Paglaris, a prominent forensic pathologist who had previously been involved in the investigation of the Tancredo Neves and Ayrton Senna cases.
Speaker 1 Pagaris publicly denied any involvement in 2012, calling the story complete nonsense. But by then, the rumour had already cemented itself in UFO folklore.
Speaker 1 Reports that firefighters assisted in the capture of the alleged creatures have also raised eyebrows.
Speaker 1 However, as Rodriguez and others have explained, in Brazil, the fire service operates under the jurisdiction of the military police, functioning as an auxiliary branch of the armed forces.
Speaker 1 This means that military firefighters could indeed have participated in a coordinated response without it being extraordinary.
Speaker 1 Rodriguez also pointed out that during the 1990s, cooperation between local local police and military units was common practice in Minas Gerais, particularly in cases involving public panic or media interest.
Speaker 1 Despite the apparent weight of testimony from Virginia's residents, the Brazilian government has consistently maintained that no extraterrestrial activity occurred.
Speaker 1 In official statements, both the Army Command and the Aerospace Defence Command Syndacter dismissed the story as a misunderstanding, fueled by rumours and misidentifications.
Speaker 1 Yet for many, that denial only adds to the mystery. If the government was truly uninvolved, why were military vehicles and soldiers seen throughout the town in the days following the incident?
Speaker 1 Why were civilians allegedly told to stay indoors?
Speaker 1 If no supernatural incident took place, and if this is all merely a product of mass hysteria, hearsay and urban legend, then what was it that the girls saw that day in the woods?
Speaker 1 Katya and the Silver Sisters have remained steadfast in their recollection, repeating the same details over decades with little variation.
Speaker 1 Their testimony feels earnest, delivered without embellishment or opportunism.
Speaker 1 Even so, the official explanation provided by authorities paints a far more mundane picture.
Speaker 1 According to that theory, The figure the girls encountered was a homeless man, suffering from both malnutrition and a severe physical deformity.
Speaker 1 In some versions of the story he is described as having darkened skin due to prolonged exposure to the sun and grime.
Speaker 1 In other words he is said to have been covered in mud, which could have given the impression of brown oily skin.
Speaker 1 The creature's protrusions may have been matted hair. and its sluggish unsteady movements consistent with exhaustion or illness.
Speaker 1 Local sources have attributed several names to this man, amongst them Little Louise and Muginho, a nickname meaning little mute.
Speaker 1 Photographs purporting to show him have surfaced intermittently online, though their authenticity remains unverified.
Speaker 1 For sceptics, this explanation is perfectly sufficient. For believers, it is little more than an attempt to rationalise an event that defies explanation.
Speaker 1 Adding further weight to the believers' camp is the strange death of Marco Eli Shirezi, a young military policeman allegedly involved in transporting one of the captured entities.
Speaker 1 Shirezi reportedly fell ill within days of contact, developing a sudden infection that baffled doctors.
Speaker 1 He died shortly afterwards with his family later claiming that military officials confiscated his medical records.
Speaker 1 Whilst officially attributed to sepsis from a hospital-acquired infection, many locals see this as the darkest and most convincing link in the chain, a possible fatal consequence of exposure to something not of this earth.
Speaker 1 When all is said and done, one cannot ignore the economic impact the incident has had on Virginia in the decades since.
Speaker 1 Whether by accident or design, the story transformed the once-quiet municipality into a tourist hub for UFO enthusiasts.
Speaker 1 Alien murals adorn shopfronts, souvenir stores sell sell green figurines, and guided tours retrace the witnesses' steps.
Speaker 1 The city council itself has embraced the legend, even approving the construction of a 20-foot water tower in 2001 shaped like a flying saucer, the Nava Espacial y Virginia, or Virginia spaceship.
Speaker 1 Illuminated at night, it stands as a permanent reminder of the event that made the town famous.
Speaker 1 In 2004, Virginia hosted the UFO Congress of Brazil, drawing researchers and enthusiasts from across the world.
Speaker 1 For some, this commercialization undermines the credibility of the original witnesses.
Speaker 1 For others, it is simply proof that the story continues to resonate, a symbol of how myth and mystery can coexist within modern life.
Speaker 1 The truth, as always, lies somewhere in the grey.
Speaker 1 Whilst many accounts may have been exaggerated or even fabricated, it seems unlikely that every single witness was mistaken.
Speaker 1 Something happened in that small town in January 1996.
Speaker 1 Whether it was extraterrestrial, military or psychological remains open to interpretation.
Speaker 1 Only Katia, Valkyrie and Liliana truly know what they saw that day. For them, the image of the creature in the woods has never faded.
Speaker 1 For the rest of us, it endures as one of the most compelling enigmas in modern UFO folklore.
Speaker 1 A story that continues to haunt the hills of Minas Sharais, and a chilling reminder that even in the most ordinary of places, extraordinary things can sometimes walk amongst us.
Speaker 1 Better
Speaker 1 than Jesus.
