This is a CBC podcast.
I'm Stephen Shua.
In 2017, I started a newspaper job in the mountain town of Squamish, British Columbia.
Local news, civic politics, small town stuff.
Just a few months after I got here, a rock climber named Dessey James was found dead in his truck on a remote logging road.
He was shot in the middle of the night.
His truck burned beyond recognition.
Jesse James was murdered.
It is truly a mystery.
It is truly a case of who done it.
Not only was Jesse's death a mystery, so was his life.
And the discovery of his true identity would trigger a landslide.
He was fundamentally a Nazi.
Jesse James was actually Davis Wolfgang Haock, an American neo-Nazi on the run from his past.
But that's not all.
He grew up under another name, Andrew Britt Greenbaum.
He believed explicitly and out loud in white supremacy and was also Jewish.
Jesse, the vegan van life rock climber, was a Jewish-born neo-Nazi.
And there was even more.
AOL had just won a massive judgment because he was one of the leading spammers in the world and he was selling penis enlargement bills.
He was burying old bars.
He had close to a billion dollars in crypto.
A white supremacist, an internet spammer, buried gold, and a crypto fortune.
Who was this guy and who killed him?
I bet he provoked lots of people and whoever killed him was first in line.
From CBC's Uncover, this is Dirtbag Climber: the story of the murder and many lives of Jesse James.
