Oh, man.

Sports, comma, man.

That's...

We should rename the show Sports Man.

Welcome to Heed the Call Thursday night football on

Sunday night football on Thursday night.

I still am not sure what it is, but what I do know is we just watched one of the best openings to an NFL season I can ever remember.

Final score, Chiefs 27, Ravens 20.

And let's get into all of it because this felt like, man, if we get the AFC Championship rematch, who's going to complain?

Dan Hansis, Mark Sessler, heeding that call.

Sess Dog,

you know,

I briefly flirted just now at the idea of renaming the show Sports Comma, Man, because sometimes it comes down to a toe.

And in this case, it was Isaiah Likely's big toe, out of bounds, back of the end zone.

Jim Harbaugh, excuse me, John Harbaugh already throwing up the two fingers, Marky, saying, I'm going for two.

We're looking to win 28-27, shocking the world.

But no, the call was overturned, game over, and the Chiefs survive.

And I think that's the way to explain it.

Yeah, I'm with you.

What a development.

Like, you know, for me, I've been

historically tough on the Ravens based on their origin story that clashed with my human interests.

But I came out of this game optimistic for this Ravens team.

I really did, like, feeling like, wow, like, I know, yes, you lost.

You lost to Kansas City on the road.

There's a couple throws at the end there where, like, come on, Lamar, like, you had a chance in the end zone.

You want it back.

And that's going to get talked about and it's going to be pinned on him.

But I also thought that this version of Lamar Jackson tonight, he did all he could.

And what a huge development when you've already got Mark Jackson or Mark Andrews to have Isaiah likely show up and be the most prominent playmaker for Baltimore this evening.

But I'd also flip it around and say that compared to a year ago, the Kansas City Chiefs who came out of that loss to the Lions with a

truncated offense that like a lot of drops, a lot of issues, a lot of questions about who was going to be a playmaker, Xavier Worthy, Rashi Rice, like, I mean, they're very lucky that that Rashi Rice was not, that was in this game, but like they absolutely, their speed, their playmaking ability, I think part of this is like, what can you look out over the next month, two months, three months, and say, who are these teams?

I'm really excited about what the Chiefs are on offense.

I thought they came out with a great plan for the rookie and also for Rashi Rice.

And

they could have, had a couple things been different, they would have taken this game over like a little bit earlier and it went down to the way it was.

But for me, Kansas City, their offense, I'm optimistic about the different look that they had from a year ago.

They're more dynamic, there's more speed.

And I don't know.

I have a feeling.

I mean, I hear you, Mark.

Everything you're saying.

I hear everything you're saying.

And I think we agree.

We're on the same page that, and Ravens fans don't want to hear this, or maybe they do want to hear it.

Like, I didn't come out of this feeling like the Ravens, you know, that maybe obviously you regret

as a fan, you're like, dang, one toe down.

And by the way, way, if they rule at a touchdown on the field, let's just be real about this.

And I know they did a great job with the NBC, NBC-it technology there.

Yes.

But do we really know?

Like, I know, I understand the curvature of a foot and how the ball, think about your own foot, okay?

The ball of the foot's in the ground.

The toe comes up a little bit, right?

How do we know that it's not a millimeter above the white?

I'm just saying.

And if you ruled it a touchdown on the field, that's all.

Maybe

there's a deep-seated Ravens fan in me.

I'm just saying it was ruled a touchdown on the field, but at the same time, yeah, they got the call right.

98% chance they got the call right.

And the two plays before both could have been touchdowns to Likely, who I thought dislocated his shoulder on that play in the back corner of the end zone, and then is back on the field two plays later.

Just a heroic effort all the way around from the guy that's going to be, I think, the biggest

waiver wire

frenzy in fantasy sports since, hell, I don't know, Anquan Bolden in 2003.

I mean, he had that type of impact.

But yeah, like what I was saying is like the Ravens fan probably doesn't want to hear this, or maybe they do.

Like, I feel great about the Ravens.

I thought Lamar looked.

unbelievable in this game.

And yes, he wants those last couple throws back, but the way he moved, 16 for 122 on the ground,

it reminded me of the old Lamar.

And sometimes the, the, and I'll bring in gravy on this.

Sometimes, Gravedigger,

the summer storylines feel like tropes, but there are two potential tropes here that really I thought in week one was like, wait a second, maybe not.

One, that Lamar had shed some weight and was feeling more explosive than he did last year.

What do you want MVP, by the way?

And absolutely, I thought he looked more slithery and quick and fast on his feet.

And two, then the narrative, and I think we even had some fun with it:

the trope alert that Lamar is more driven and more focused, and there's more urgency.

And he's on the sideline in a way, and they did a good job in NBC calling that out.

He's on the sideline just imploring after that sack strip fumble.

And you could tell that this is a guy that's ready, and he's sick of being the bridesmaid.

So I saw a lot of good from the Ravens in general, Jason.

I kind of feel good about what I said on the Tuesday preview show that this would be a little speed bump, but that's all it would be for Ravens that I think are going to go on to have a good season.

But also, a lot of things I was kind of expecting came to fruition here with their offensive line in particular.

And you talked about Lamar on the sideline, and like, that's who he was sort of imploring to play better.

It was after the strip sack.

For some reason, the Ravens were rotating their right tackles.

They had Roger Rosengarten, the rookie, coming in and off, and Daniel Falala, I can't say his name, coming in and out.

Rosengarten, Rosengada, rookie of the year.

He got absolutely trashed on the Chris Jones sack strip.

So that was.

That was his first snap of the game.

He comes in for that drive.

Very first play.

And Lamar's on the side of them, like, what are you guys doing?

But so that was definitely an issue.

But again, I think it's one of those things that's going to take a little bit of time to gel.

And Lamar, the threat he's posing with his legs, like, it's not anything new we've never seen from Lamar.

Like, obviously, we know he's a great runner, but it felt like at points in this game, he didn't necessarily trust his receivers.

He was was letting them run those clear-out routes down the field and man coverage, which the Chiefs finally started spying him towards that drive where they ended up getting the field goal to cut it to seven.

But before that, it was like they're running man coverage with no spy, and the defensive backs have their back to the quarterback.

Lamar's letting them run the clear-out and then just taking up all that space that's there.

So, I think it's going to be dangerous.

I am a little bit concerned about this receiving core.

Like, I was not expecting Isaiah likely to be the Ravens, like, wide receiver one from the tight end spot in this game.

And Zay Flowers, like

barely any, if any, catches down the field.

I think Lamar's like average air yards at halftime was 0.8 yards per target down the field.

Like that is something that could be a concern, but then you have to weigh the context that like this Chiefs defense with Steve Spagnola, it's one of the toughest defenses the Ravens will face all year, if not the toughest.

So, I mean, there's a lot of tough defenses in their own division, but the Chiefs are going to be up there with one of the toughest in the league.

So with that that context, it makes me feel better.

Like, the Ravens are going to absolutely smash the bad teams in this league if they play like they did tonight.

And if they line up correctly

the entire game, do you think they maybe even win?

Like, how, like, those five-yard illegal formation penalties, just so frustrating to be set back over and over again.

Well, I think that was like, like, it felt to me like

here's the thing that refs have been told to focus on early, and they pinged it, they pinged it, the national audience sees it.

Point of emphasis.

Yeah, point of emphasis.

I mean, because it's like, give me a break.

Tell me, like, let's, if we were to, if we were to, like, truth serum an umpire or ref, like, they have seen this years in a row from all sorts of players.

It became a point of emphasis tonight.

You know, for me, though, like, when it comes to likely, it's like, yes, it's concerning that other players didn't step up, but what a great development to have him develop the way he has, like, to show up.

And I think, to me, the Ravens team, like, like stuff that was missing a year ago, like during some of their down moments, like it showed up tonight.

And this was a trope that got untroped with Lamar.

Like he looked to me,

when the quarterback loses weight scenario and like becomes quicker, faster, more expedient, like it showed up tonight.

Lamar was about as, and I've been, I have not been the biggest Lamar person.

I'm not part of the Lamar me, but like tonight it was like, I really feel like he is a different, he's talked about wanting to be a different person.

There's more urgency.

And like, I don't know why that is suddenly showing up in your sixth season, but I saw it tonight.

And I kind of feel differently about this Ravens team coming out of this loss than I have about the Ravens in half a decade.

I really do, and I can't put my entire finger on it, but I just do.

I have, I mean, my theory is that, yeah, he's entering this point in his career.

And that 2023 Ravens team, which you talked about earlier in the week,

by many metrics and just by the eye test, was one of the best teams ever to not make a Super Bowl.

And Lamar's sick of that shit.

And I think

it was his first chance to get back on the field and be like, that's it, man.

We need to take advantage of that window.

Now, they didn't.

And that's important to point out.

I do watch, and nobody wants to hear it because who cares?

But I do.

As a sports fan, through the prism of my sports fandom, I did grow up.

I was lucky enough to grow up in the heyday of the Yankees dynasty with Jeter.

And I am not blind to the fact that during that run where they won four out of five titles, it always felt like things broke their way.

And

that would drive anybody that wasn't a Yankee fan crazy.

And you see that in a lot of sports, I feel like the teams that go on these long runs, you start to think like, why does it always seem that everything seems to go their way?

And look at the play at the end of the game with likely with his toe out of bounds, or, you know, even going back to the AFC title game, the late hit that the Chiefs allows them to essentially run out the clock

and punch the tick and beat the Ravens last year.

And in this game, there were a couple of different plays, including the last possession of the Chiefs, where Mahomes on third down and long with a chance to ice the game.

Passes deflected, shoots up in the air.

And our old colleague, Mike Giardi, who's really good and knows the game, did a great job pointing this out.

That Mahomes did a nice job instinctually.

He went up and got his own batted pass and then went down and they punted it away.

And Collinsworth, as he's wont to do, just was

all about

Mahomes there.

And maybe not enough about the Ravens defense stepping up in a huge spot there

and getting the ball back.

to Lamar.

It was Trenton Simpson who made the great play there to give the Ravens a chance.

So, like, was it the most dynamic Chiefs performance here?

No, but also there are things that I really like if I'm a Chiefs fan, and

my head is going through my head, the Barnwell comment that he sees them as maybe a historic team this year.

I love the way Isaiah Pachenko looked in this game.

He looked like a guy ready to take the next step at running back as a dual threat.

Rashi Rice, I mean, I really, this guy could be an all-pro.

That's the way this is set up.

Xavier Worthy, what else needs to be said?

His first touch ever is a touchdown, two touchdowns in the game.

And this was a game where it was a quiet Kelsey game, but I thought Justin Rice and Worthy especially stand out to me that this is not going to be the same Chiefs offense that you were driving you crazy last year, not putting the pedal to the metal.

They have some real juice.

Rice is a second-year guy making the leap, and Worthy is a guy that's a perfect fit for what they needed.

Yeah, and I think they even pointed out on the broadcast that the difference that Worthy makes and just the offense in general, when you have somebody stretching the field like that, it's not necessarily about hitting the deep shots, which obviously they hit the one on a busted coverage.

It's like it wasn't like Xavier Worthy's speed just beat somebody, it was a broken coverage.

But the idea that they're pulling those defenders back creates all that space for Rashi Rice, who basically ran slants like the entire game.

Like his route chart, if you look at it, was just slants over the middle of the field.

And they were just spamming this like quick RPO action right over the middle.

And the Ravens never really picked up on it or found a way to stop it.

There was the one play that

got the ball got knocked down

that was like a third down.

That was a pretty big stop for the Ravens.

But other than that, it felt like every time they went to this Rashi Rice slant, it was there.

And he didn't have to do anything else.

That's the only route he ran in this whole game.

So I think he's going to be insanely productive with that.

And you could see the Ravens defense just like...

putting so much attention on Kelsey after he torched them in the AFC championship game.

But that opened things up for Rice over the middle of the field.

And then Worthy Electric, I got a stat for you on Worthy.

This comes from Tony Holtzman Escarino on Twitter.

Xavier Worthy is the first player in NFL history with a 20-plus-yard rushing touchdown and a 20-plus-yard receiving touchdown in his NFL debut.

Wow.

All right.

Let's bring in now

perfect segue for our guest for the opener.

He is a

stalwart in terms of Chiefs coverage.

Pete Sweeney of

the Arrowhead Pride website, he joins us now, and he is at Arrowhead Field,

and he is going to give us a little boots on the ground perspective.

Pete, are you there, buddy?

I'm here, and much like you guys, I've broken away free from Andy Reid and the NFL press conference and joining you from the field right behind me.

If you're on a visual, that's where Isaiah likely had his his foot

just to toenail out

to give the Chiefs the win.

Pete, you've been covering the Chiefs for a long time, and you know, you've seen it all.

But that, in terms of early season drama, especially when you take last year's opener,

the Kadarius Toney game, as I recall,

to the way this one ended, it's got to be had to be a lot of jubilation.

I know you were down there at the Andy Reid press conference.

What did you hear from him?

Yeah, typically, anything can happen in a game.

I've been covering Andy Reid since 2014.

Anything can happen in the game.

And he kind of stays measured, right?

Like, nothing really makes him laugh almost at the situation.

But he came in, and I'm sure you guys will see it on videos, and it was kind of like laughing.

Like, man, sometimes it comes down to an inch.

It was really, you know, if you're on the right side of it, an amusing ending to the game.

And it's strange.

I mean, I'm sure the rest of the NFL is sick of it.

It just

always seems to go to the Chiefs' way.

I was just saying that, Pete, before you came on.

Yeah, it that you know, one thing happens or another, and there are these strange wins, and it does seem like Kansas City always seems to get a bounce, and it's just a huge win.

I mean, you think about not only this team, I mean, the Ravens are going to be there, right?

They look, you know, good tonight.

I think they need to figure out the downfield stuff, but they look pretty good tonight.

And so, you got the Bengals next week, and so that's a huge win.

I think if you look at this two-game set,

you know, you start with the Ravens, you get the Bengals next week, you want to go one and one there, right?

Like, I mean, you always want to go 2-0, of course, but you want to make sure you at least get one of those.

So now it's like a little bit of house money, especially in this early in the season, I think.

Yeah, they just seem so comfortable, uncowed, completely comfortable in the moment.

This was a huge game and against a dangerous opponent.

I wanted to ask because I think sometimes you spend all offseason saying, you know, look at the Bills were dumb enough to allow the Chiefs to come up in the draft and take Xavier Worthy.

Nice job, Buffalo.

The Chiefs inherit Xavier Worthy.

And it's like, cool.

We'll just like, in theory, as we're creating these rosters in our minds, plug him in as the guy that adds speed and, you know, a dangerous element.

But then tonight, it completely materializes.

Like, what have you seen or what have you learned about how they developed him into this offense and meshed him in so quickly to have this performance tonight?

Because he was effective right away and it changes everything you think about this offense.

Well, we'll see how the snap counts come out, but just from watching the game here, it seemed like they were, in a sense, easing him in.

You know, I noticed number 84, Justin Watson, who's been this role player for them for a couple of years, was with the Bucs and then came over to Kansas City.

It seemed like he was getting more of the regular reps and they had a couple things designed for Worthy, especially making sure that they have a deep threat.

And I think some of that end-around stuff where

you see these clips during training camp, camp, and we saw it, you know, it is a guy that's a little bit undersized.

He's going to struggle sometimes with pressed man, but the pressed man doesn't matter when you run him on an end around.

And it's like you have Andy Reid, who's one of these GOAT offensive coordinators, scheming him up.

And what I like about Andy Reid, and especially with these rookies, and you saw it with Rashid Rice last year, they don't put a ton on him to begin.

you know, their careers in the NFL.

And that allows them to gain confidence.

And I think you see Worthy now, regardless of how they used him, whatever, he leaves the first game of his career with two touchdowns.

And now he has ultimate confidence as he builds and continues to develop, I think, as the season goes along.

And so, yeah, just another weapon for the Chiefs.

This is now a funny relationship with Buffalo.

They are grand enemies, right, in the scheme of things.

But they trade and get Mahomes from Buffalo.

They trade now and get Worthy.

And the rest of the NFL and the AFC, especially, is like, what are you doing?

And then less talked about the Chiefs actually jumped Buffalo because they thought that they were going to take Trent McDuffie potentially, who looks to be, you know, after Patrick Sertan this week, probably the next quarterback in line to get a big extension.

And so, yeah, they keep on infusing talent.

And I think the key for Kansas City in this run, and you saw it with a lot of those Patriots teams, I think in the early 2000s, is like it's just not satisfied by success.

It's like, well, what was our weakness last year?

We were great.

We won the Super Bowl.

We managed to do it.

We haven't been able to throw the ball downfield since Diary Kill went to the the Dolphins.

Let's go and get somebody.

And they went and did that.

And I think this is just the very beginning.

And they'll expand his role as the year goes along.

Yeah, and Justin did a great job as you were giving that answer, Pete, that he was on the field for 62% of the snaps.

It's the second most among the KC wide receivers.

61% routes were run out wide, 29% in the slot.

And he, you know, he only, he had three targets, turned that two for 47 and a touch, and he had the one carry for 21 yards and a touchdown.

It was just, that was electrifying.

And like, for me, like as just a football fan, there was a lot of frustration, Pete, watching this offense last year.

And they found a way to get another title out of it, but like having Mahomes in his prime and then what a grind it was.

I just wonder, yeah, what is Worthy's role?

You imagine it's going to continue to grow.

The touches will continue to grow.

And is this offense going to get to a place where they become unstoppable?

It's too early to say, obviously, but it does feel like they have more pieces in place.

This is a game where you had Travis Kelsey only targeted four times and finished with 34 yards.

It feels like they're just scratching the surface of what they can do.

First of all, Graver with the instant NFL

next-gen set.

God damn.

Graver's had a nice day, by the way.

Guys got it going on.

Shout out to our old colleague Michael F.

Florio, who tweeted out those numbers.

Very good.

Perfect.

Yeah, no,

I think they're going to just continue to try to give Mahomes more options.

And I think, you know, when you think about this game and just this idea that like Hollywood Brown had this marked, you know, he wanted to play his draft day team, wasn't even involved.

And I think ideally by the end of the season, like they did with Rashi, like they used Rasheed in toward the beginning, put him in situations where he could thrive early, gain confidence.

And then by the end of the year, I think he was a huge part of the game plan.

I think you're going to see that with Xavier Worthy.

You know, before Brown went down in training camp in the 11 personnel, these three wide wide receiver sets, it was Rice, Brown, and Worthy.

And I think when you look at this game, and I think the offense has some kinks to work out.

There were certainly some disappointments.

I think they went one of three in the red zone, and so you got to figure that part out.

I just think once you have these three receivers on the field at the same time, that idea of the 2020 offense that

really, you know, could with Tyree Kill throw the ball downfield, or even before that in like 18, getting back to, and in Kansas City, they called it the Legion of Zoom.

You know, this could even be, because of the amount of speedy receivers and just the quality of them, this could actually be a more explosive offense than maybe even the ones with Tyreek Hill.

We're very early here.

Brown is yet to take the field.

You know, we see a glimpse of Worthy.

We know what Rice can do, but I think getting all these guys together will be fascinating to watch.

I guess that leads me to a two-part question.

For all these Jabronis that, you know, drafted Travis Kelsey very high in their fantasy drafts, and maybe we're getting a little bit less Travis Kelsey.

How do you feel about what his role might be?

I drafted Travis Kelsey.

You're calling me a Jabroni?

Well, not a one-week sessed off.

Joe, Justin, if you're projecting him to be the Kelsey of three years ago, but secondly, I thought he came out tonight with a very different look from the neck up in terms of the hair.

What was the general stadium response to that as well, if you could comment on that?

Yeah, I mean, I generally think he needs to get the beard going.

And

when it's time for the season, it doesn't matter what your pop star girlfriend wants.

You got to go with the hair that works.

So completely agree on the hair point.

But no, I think in general coming into the season, so there's a positive and negative to this.

I think in general, coming into the season, I saw that this was going to be a changing of the guard year where they realized Travis Kelsey is old.

And not to say he's not going to be an impact in plenty of games this year, but I think where for years and years and years, you've run the offense through Travis Kelsey and to to an extent Tyree Kill when he was still here, I think now it's Rashi Rice and everything.

And from what you can tell from the indications are from the league, he's not going to be suspended.

It doesn't seem like anytime soon.

We'll see how that goes.

Maybe it's next year, but I think they're going to really lean into Rashi Rice as the primary target.

We saw that tonight, these quick slants where he's able to get all these yards after the catch.

And Kelsey is more of a compliment, but you're also seeing them mix in Noah Gray.

And they just signed him to an extension right before the game and came out with rap sheet and stuff.

And so I just think, let's make sure.

This is a 35-year-old man now.

He's at the tail end of his career.

It seems like it's going to be a year.

If they were to do it, I wonder if he retires this year, maybe next year, has two years left.

I tend to think these are the final two years of Travis Kelsey's career.

His role might be a little bit different, where there's only going to be certain games where we're used to, hey, five, six catches, 100 yards, and a touchdown.

But there'll be games like this where I think it's the Rashi Rice show and you're looking at other pieces.

Isaiah Pacheco is another one.

And then I think you've got to look at this game individually too.

And I'm going to have to go back and give it a second look, but I feel like when you're going against someone like Kyle Hamilton, you know, sometimes that's a tough ass to have production against.

So it might be an isolated game, but I do think Rashi Rice is now your primary receiver in Kansas City.

There you go.

Pete Sweeney, he is the guy.

to go to.

Arrowhead Pride, editor-in-chief, giving us a little bit of time down on the field.

What do you do now, Pete?

what do you what does a pete sweeney do you got the glow up going on you the the the lettuce looks great i love these glasses the beard beard over mustache big take there now what do you do yeah no uh i will write stuff till 2 a.m local time and then get up and do 6 a.m local news uh so it's it's usually i i i get to about 7 30 a.m local time in kansas city tomorrow and i feel hungover and i've had maybe like a glass of milk so that's usually how primetime games go for me.

But yeah, no,

get stuff up for ArrowheadPride.com if you want some Chiefs stuff.

You know, we try to keep the website active.

So if you're ever looking for a Chiefs angle, I know everyone's sick of the Chiefs, so I know no one is going to it.

But I would appreciate any support.

He's a working man.

Yeah, you're hard working, Pete.

Thank you so much, bud.

We'll be in touch.

Thank you, guys.

All right.

Thank you.

There he goes.

You know, that was a, Dan, that was a very interesting.

I loved seeing him down on the field.

What a, that's a true journo down there.

And at one point, um, a lonely field worker walked by with like a 14-foot ladder behind him that I thought was going to strike him right in the temple, but walked by.

I was like, that's not the job I'd wanted.

Like, of all the jobs you could have at the football game, like, I got to carry a ladder after the game by myself.

Not the job.

Well, that's working class to do.

It is.

That's a working-class man characteristic.

Do I seem like a working-class man?

I'm not.

I'm not going to pretend that I am.

I don't pretend that I am.

Have I seen you do a lot of kind of manual like lifting and labor and things in the years that I've known you?

No.

Do I think it's something that's in you?

No.

No, but

could you potentially do it if your life was on the line?

Perhaps.

Yeah, like if Russia took over and they just started to tell me what to do, that's possibly something I'd be doing, and I wouldn't have much say in it.

You carry ladder 100 yards now.

Something like that.

Yes.

All right.

Let's get out of here.

So that is the first game of the season.

And if they're all like that, we're in for a treat this year.

Just a reminder, you have the full week one preview with me, Mark, Gravy, Mike, and Jordan.

That's available to you right now.

And in case you missed it, the Patreon, Heed the Call, Patreon.

is live right now.

And Mark, we've already, as the game was going on, we saw people are getting involved.

And we can't wait to show you everything that we have cooking over on the Patreon, patreon.com slash heed the call

to sign up and be part of that little thought experiment in our universe.

And of course, the next time you hear from us is, well, tomorrow night, because, you know, it's a whole thing now.

It's every night, Friday night from Brazil, Packers, Eagles.

And after that, of course, it's the big one.

It's the flagship show week one where we recap every game that we previewed with Mike and Jordan.

Cannot wait, Mark.

How do you feel about that?

Well, I feel wonderful.

And when it comes to the Patreon, it's more of an invitation.

It's like, if you're too cool to, you know, not sign up for it, that's fine.

But, like, what it is, it's a secret, beautiful world.

And, like, do you want to come into that world?

The door is open.

The door is wide open.

Come on in.

And just to put a button on what we talked about tonight, as someone who's been there,

I've been part of the dynasty as a fan.

It doesn't last forever, Chiefs fans.

It only feels that way.

Enjoy it.

Enjoy it, because it's a special moment in time.

And the toes won't always land on the white.

But right now,

they do.

Until next time, heed the call.
