Speaker 5 I'm your host, Payne Lindsay.

Speaker 6 In the last episode, I dropped a few bombshells on you there at the end. The two main suspects in this case are now deceased.
Dreddy Brian, aka Brian Otten, has died, and Catfish John,

Speaker 6 has also died. On the evening of May 16th, 2020, a man named Lance walked up the winding staircase of the starlit hostel just 15 minutes outside Creststone.
That's when he saw him.

Speaker 6 Brian Otten, better known as Dreddy Brian, was lying on the roof deck. His body was still, his skin was purple, and he wasn't breathing.

Speaker 6 There was a dog leash wrapped around his wrist, Lance's dog, and next to him, a mix of orange peels, vomit, and a strange white foam seeping from his mouth. Immediately panic set in.

Speaker 6 Lance bolted down the stairs, yelling for someone to call 911, screaming, I think he's dead. The hostel owner, named Doug, eventually made the call.
Another guest also went up to check on him.

Speaker 6 Around 20 minutes later, an ambulance arrived, but it was already too late. Two sheriff's deputies showed up soon after, and EMS confirmed that Brian was gone.

Speaker 6 At 7.52 p.m., the time of death was officially called. Three days later, the autopsy report came back.
Heroin, oxycodone, kratom, nicotine, and marijuana.

Speaker 6 No fentanyl, no meth, no signs of choking or asphyxiation. The official cause of death, heroin, and metraginine intoxication.
It was a cocktail of depressants. and a mix that can be lethal.

Speaker 6 And that's when all the speculation began. Brian wasn't just some guy in Creststone.
He was one of the key figures in Crystal Reisinger's disappearance.

Speaker 6 One of the last people known to have seen her alive. And now, he was dead.
Just two days earlier, Brian cashed his $1,200 stimulus check.

Speaker 6 Typically broke, he had been working odd jobs at the hostel, mopping floors, washing dishes, just to have a place to stay. But when he got that money, he went on a bender.

Speaker 6 He and Lance had driven to nearby Salida. Brian drank heavily, rum, beers, 40s, more than usual.
He got belligerent, kicked in a windshield, and eventually passed out in a sleeping bag.

Speaker 6 The next morning, hungover and sick, he needed something to, quote, feel better. That's when he got on Facebook Messenger, using his friend's phone, and messaged a guy for heroin.

Speaker 6 The next day, Brian stayed behind. while his friends went to town.
From morning until late afternoon, he was alone. No one checked on him.
Then around 6 p.m., Lance returned.

Speaker 6 At first he just thought Brian was laying there, but something fell off. He stepped closer and realized his dog was still tied to Brian's wrist.

Speaker 6 Then he saw that Brian's skin was purple and he wasn't breathing. Later that night, after the sheriff's deputies and EMS left, Lance and a friend went back upstairs.
And that's when they found it.

Speaker 6 Brian's heroin spoon and his needle, still sitting in the bathroom. Somehow, the deputies had missed them.
Then Lance checked the old phone Brian was using his cell phone, and he was still logged in.

Speaker 6 The one that Brian was communicating with me on, right when I thought I was about to meet one of the number one suspects in this case, just like that, he was gone.

Speaker 6 Brian Otten, one of the last people to see Crystal Risinger alive, was dead.

Speaker 6 And whoever sold him that heroin was still out there. there.

Speaker 6 And Jody Bryan isn't the only person to die in this case. For years, John Keenan, better known as Catfish, was the shadow lurking behind the disappearance of Crystal.

Speaker 6 He was a known drug dealer, a violent presence, a man accused of holding women captive, and now he's dead too.

Speaker 6 On September 22, 2022, the police in Raleigh, North Carolina found Catfish John unresponsive in an apartment. His friend Tyler was on the scene.

Speaker 6 According to witnesses, the place was littered with drug paraphernalia. Lieutenant Morrison of the Raleigh Police Department officially confirmed his death.

Speaker 6 There weren't many details, just that it ended the way a lot of people expected it to.

Speaker 6 Six months earlier, on March 29th, 2022, Catfish was arrested in Raleigh. Possession of a stolen vehicle, felony drug charges, with intent to distribute.

Speaker 6 The drugs likely included cocaine, meth, fentanyl, Xanax, ambien, valium, all things Catfish was used to using. And this wasn't his first run-in with law enforcement.

Speaker 6 Back in 2019, he was also arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and meth possession.

Speaker 6 And in 2020, during my own bizarre confrontation with him where I met him at a bar, The man threatened me, tried to attack me, literally threw a punch. Missed though.

Speaker 6 Crystal Reisinger had told several people that she was drugged and raped at Catfish John's house in Crestone in July of 2016. And just a few days later, she vanished.

Speaker 6 And Catfish, well, he was always at the center of it. Then, there were more women.
After my investigation into Catfish, another survivor came forward.

Speaker 6 I'm going to keep her name anonymous, but she had filed a police report in Raleigh, North Carolina, back in 2013.

Speaker 6 Rape by force. She didn't know his name then.
She had met him at a bar, didn't drink, was completely sober, but she kept seeing him at every bar she went to that night. Catfish was following her.

Speaker 6 Later, when her friends went back to her place, Catfish tried to tag along. He offered to make her a drink.
It was the only drink she had that night.

Speaker 6 The next thing she remembers, she woke up in her bed. Catfish was on top of her, naked and raping her.
She fought him off, screamed at him for 15 minutes on the balcony before he finally left.

Speaker 6 She called the police, but like so many cases, it went nowhere. This sparked a snowball of more women coming forward.

Speaker 6 Other women who said that Catfish had abused them, held them captive, drugged them. One of them told me that Catfish had locked her inside his house for three days.

Speaker 6 And when she finally got out, he bragged to her boyfriend that they had been together sexually.

Speaker 6 She had no memory of that at all. And two other women described similar experiences, being trapped inside Catfish's house, even held at gunpoint.

Speaker 6 For years, the people of Creststone truly feared Catfish John, and, well, for pretty good reason. This guy was awful, evil.

Speaker 6 And all these years later, Even though Dreddy Bryan and Catfish John are dead, the most important question still remains. Where is Crystal?

Speaker 4 What was it like confronting a person of interest or just going into these different communities?

Speaker 7 I'll be honest, like every single time it was pretty scary because you just don't know what's going to happen. Just the sort of the element of surprise kind of gets your adrenaline going.

Speaker 4 Was there a lot of people that were willing to talk, willing to speak out?

Speaker 7 Surprisingly, yes. I actually think that some people knowing the podcast made them a little more comfortable with us as a team.
In a lot of ways, people were open to talking.

Speaker 9 That's true. It's just my

Speaker 9 surprise side of the road friend. Like I am that I'm a price of the road person, but I'll be on the shady side too, right?

Speaker 6 There's something very unsettling about reading a dead man's messages, like a ghost reaching out from beyond. Just a couple days ago, I got access to something that I never expected.

Speaker 6 Direct messages from Dreddy Brian.

Speaker 6 Not just old screenshots, but his real conversations, exactly as they were, completely untouched. A local woman, someone deeply embedded in this community, reached out and gave me her Facebook login.

Speaker 6 She wanted me to see what she saw. And what I found was chilling.
In these messages, Brian wasn't just talking.

Speaker 6 He seemed to be confessing, lashing out, threatening, and hinting at at something much darker.

Speaker 6 Something only he and a handful of other people probably knew. And now, for the first time, you get to hear them too.

Speaker 10 How you holding up?

Speaker 11 I'm good. I'm in Crestone now.

Speaker 10 I'm at Nate's house. Don't remember much of last night.
Got a fat lip, gnarly nose, slightly crooked smile. But life goes on.

Speaker 11 How funny. I'm in Moffett, heading to Crestone later.

Speaker 10 Josh is getting a place in Salida, and he's making payments on my RV. Once he moves in, I can get my RV back.

Speaker 10 You looking for a temporary roommate?

Speaker 11 Did you just message me?

Speaker 12 Yeah.

Speaker 10 Did you

Speaker 10 read it?

Speaker 10 Should I have my secretary fax it to you?

Speaker 11 LOL.

Speaker 11 You still in Creststone?

Speaker 10 Yeah.

Speaker 10 Not enough work here. Wish I had wheels.

Speaker 11 I got a place in Salita. It's temporary until HUD helps me get something bigger.
By the library. Small, but I like it.

Speaker 10 I could probably grab your stuff when I make it to the hospital.

Speaker 11 You at Nate's now?

Speaker 11 I can't go there. Got a restraining order on James.
Don't know if he still hangs around, but I'm not taking chances.

Speaker 1 Good call.

Speaker 10 Fuck all the violent, toxic bullshit. Love and light.

Speaker 11 Who's Catfish?

Speaker 10 Catfish. He stalks people on Facebook.
Dude needs needs a hobby.

Speaker 1 Oh.

Speaker 10 Catfish was the last person Crystal talked about before she disappeared. She told me and others she thought he drugged and raped her.
Still don't know if it's true, but that's what she said.

Speaker 3 Hmm.

Speaker 1 Yeah.

Speaker 11 Jesse's staying with me.

Speaker 1 Fuck.

Speaker 10 So that's a no-go for me staying with you.

Speaker 11 James said I'd end up homeless in Salida with you if I left him. Not letting him be even half right.

Speaker 10 Yeah, I hear you.

Speaker 11 Been testing people, feeding misinformation to see who it gets back to. Shauna blocked me real quick.
That's all I needed to know.

Speaker 10 I don't talk about you.

Speaker 1 Don't worry.

Speaker 10 Tell James to call me.

Speaker 3 What?

Speaker 10 Tell that bitch-ass pussy f ⁇ to be a man and own his shit. He threatened my family.

Speaker 11 Excuse me?

Speaker 10 Tell James to hit me up. Now.

Speaker 10 I swear, if he's hiding, I will find him.

Speaker 11 You're threatening me now?

Speaker 1 No.

Speaker 10 Just need to talk.

Speaker 11 Try calling Nate.

Speaker 10 Nate lied. Said James was with you.

Speaker 11 We are not together.

Speaker 10 Fuck him. Tell him I said he's a f.

Speaker 11 You are threatening my life.

Speaker 10 You're expendable. I'll end you.

Speaker 11 Brian, stop.

Speaker 10 Biker gangs collect on this shit. I will ruin you.

Speaker 11 These messages will be used against you. I'm forwarding them.

Speaker 10 Go fuck yourself, Hillbilly.

Speaker 1 Fuck James.

Speaker 13 Fuck you.

Speaker 11 Brian, you need help.

Speaker 10 I will murder you.

Speaker 10 I don't remember last night at all. Apparently, you and James are part of a white power biker gang.
But if you were, you'd never call the cops. Good to know you're both full of shit.

Speaker 11 You need help.

Speaker 10 Tell the cops to call me. I'll tell them everything I know.

Speaker 11 You have a warrant now.

Speaker 10 You're just a junkie meth dealer.

Speaker 11 Josh is probably getting evicted because of you.

Speaker 10 I'm clean as a janitor. You?

Speaker 11 Good job, Brian.

Speaker 6 If you thought Dreddy Brian's messages were disturbing, these are something else entirely. This same woman...

Speaker 6 who gave me her Facebook login also had messages with Catfish John, the man at the center of everything.

Speaker 6 Now, Catfish wasn't just paranoid. This guy was unraveling.
His words read like the ramblings of someone who knew their time was running out.

Speaker 6 Someone who knew way too much, and yet he still couldn't stop talking.

Speaker 6 What he says in these messages is the kind of thing that makes you stop scrolling, makes you reread it, makes you wonder: is he confessing? Is he warning us? How many things are wrong with this guy?

Speaker 6 Either way, it's dangerous.

Speaker 1 Want company?

Speaker 13 I handled the car and flight change.

Speaker 11 Are you okay? You got quiet.

Speaker 13 I went to see my kid.

Speaker 1 She wouldn't see me.

Speaker 13 Then I saw Brie. She was kind to me.
So were you.

Speaker 13 And then suddenly, I'm alone again. Every time I get happy, I get slapped down, like I'm banned from Disneyland, without love.

Speaker 13 Without real friends.

Speaker 13 Is this even a life worth living?

Speaker 11 I don't know what happened. I didn't turn on you.
You flipped on me.

Speaker 13 It's not about blame. Just trying to find my people again.

Speaker 11 Me too, John. Me too.

Speaker 11 Fucking Katie's mom came banging on my door, freaking out.

Speaker 11 Everyone is afraid of you.

Speaker 11 Why am I not?

Speaker 11 Have you even asked yourself that?

Speaker 13 I know why Crystal had to run. I could expose it, but that wouldn't help anyone.

Speaker 1 Wait, what?

Speaker 13 Do not make me state the adjacent street name, IP address, and proof of her life today.

Speaker 13 Respectfully, fuck the global powers. If I die, contingency files drop across every major server.

Speaker 11 What are you talking about?

Speaker 13 They told me to stay quiet. FBI said don't mention her real name.

Speaker 11 John, slow down.

Speaker 13 Payne's friends killed her. But south of Mexico, they think she took the weight.

Speaker 11 Wait, what?

Speaker 13 They are watching me. Watching you now, too.
I have names, but you don't need to know them. If they kill me, I promise you, I'll still get the truth out.

Speaker 13 I shot the deputy, not the sheriff. And he covered for me.
That's real love.

Speaker 11 Jesus, John. Do you hear yourself?

Speaker 13 I know my people. I know my enemies.
And I see you choosing sides.

Speaker 11 I haven't chosen anything.

Speaker 13 You're either with me or you're against me.

Speaker 11 You need help.

Speaker 13 I need revenge.

Speaker 13 I am a soldier with no gun. They don't understand me.
I am the last line of defense.

Speaker 11 Who is they?

Speaker 13 The ones who took Crystal.

Speaker 13 The ones who took everything.

Speaker 13 They think they're safe. They're not.

Speaker 11 You're scaring me.

Speaker 13 You should be scared.

Speaker 13 I'm done.

Speaker 6 Catfish is dead. Dreddy Brian is dead.
For some people, that might seem like the end of the story. But for me, for Crystal's family, for everyone still searching for answers, it's the exact opposite.

Speaker 6 Because if their deaths proved anything, it's that the people in this town knew something.

Speaker 6 And some of them are most certainly still alive and capable of talking. Back in 2017 and 18, when I was deep in this case, I had phone calls with dozens of locals, and two men in particular stood out.

Speaker 6 They weren't just speculating. They weren't just repeating rumors.
They claimed to have direct knowledge of Crystal's murder.

Speaker 6 And when I finally got the chance to speak with them, I thought I was about to hear everything, finally get to the truth. But let's just say that didn't go as planned.

Speaker 8 Can you tell me what you know about how she was killed?

Speaker 8 I don't know. I don't know.

Speaker 8 Like,

Speaker 15 ready to talk about it over the phone, kind of like I told you last time, yeah.

Speaker 1 He said, What?

Speaker 15 I said, I don't really want to talk about it on the phone, like I said last time.

Speaker 8 I know that

Speaker 8 your brother was taken advantage of in some way, and I know more about Catfish's involvement in that.

Speaker 8 And I also know that you had nothing to do with this, and so I have no interest in trying to bring anybody else into this, just trying to figure out how to close this thing out. And so

Speaker 1 it would help me.

Speaker 15 Why don't we start with like, why don't you tell me what you know,

Speaker 15 and then we'll see if I

Speaker 15 feel comfortable enough to tell you whether you're right or wrong.

Speaker 8 Captains dosed your brother.

Speaker 16 Yeah.

Speaker 16 They did that to a lot of people for the past 20 years

Speaker 8 It's fucked up man.

Speaker 1 Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 16 Well I mean that's that's what they would do and fucking

Speaker 15 cashier could pay people to dose people

Speaker 15 or he'd you know set things up

Speaker 16 Set like he would dose like some pills or something and leave them out and then someone would take those pills from him

Speaker 16 'cause his loss was a a fucking mess.

Speaker 16 And

Speaker 15 basically, you know,

Speaker 16 fucking people would find shit

Speaker 15 and take it

Speaker 15 because he he wouldn't know the fucking difference.

Speaker 8 Yeah, exactly. He wouldn't fucking know shit.
But he's laced that he's laced those drugs with, I mean, all kind of shit. And like, it's permanently fucked people up, man.

Speaker 15 And so yeah, they were they were poisoning people for a a long time

Speaker 15 and it wasn't just with like acid.

Speaker 15 You know, there's other chemicals they use.

Speaker 16 I mean, I know the story.

Speaker 8 Could you tell me your version of the story? I'll tell you m I'll tell you if it if it differs from mine.

Speaker 8 Nope.

Speaker 6 Why not?

Speaker 15 Because, man.

Speaker 1 Like, I'm listening

Speaker 1 to myself, bro.

Speaker 15 My story, my story is

Speaker 15 people already know my story. And that's why I'm asking you what you gathered.

Speaker 15 I mean,

Speaker 15 if you want to hear what happened,

Speaker 1 then, I mean,

Speaker 15 tell me what you got.

Speaker 15 That's basically it, man. Like, tell me what you got.
I'll tell you if you were right or wrong. And if I feel comfortable enough.

Speaker 1 Okay. Okay, okay.
Okay, okay.

Speaker 8 I've heard that there was some sort of incident where she was shot

Speaker 8 and

Speaker 8 in some way or another they burned her body.

Speaker 1 Yeah.

Speaker 15 Um what what caliber you take all that gas, man.

Speaker 15 Uh what cali what caliber have you heard?

Speaker 6 I heard it was a revolver. I don't know.

Speaker 1 You don't know

Speaker 1 it

Speaker 15 probably wasn't even a fucking real gun.

Speaker 8 Was it a

Speaker 8 high caliber airsoft gun?

Speaker 15 It could be.

Speaker 8 Like a $1,700 nice one?

Speaker 15 Yeah, more than likely. Sounds about right.

Speaker 8 Okay.

Speaker 8 Did it occur at Cathys's house?

Speaker 15 Maybe. um what else so what else you got you said her body got burnt huh

Speaker 5 that's what I heard

Speaker 5 yeah

Speaker 8 is that true or no

Speaker 15 who knows

Speaker 15 who knows

Speaker 8 I mean like is that what you is that you heard or no

Speaker 15 that kind of that kind of leaves room for fucking you know finding bones and ashes

Speaker 8 I also heard that something about a hot tub.

Speaker 15 Hot tub?

Speaker 15 Oh, no, yeah, I don't think anybody around here has a hot tub, huh?

Speaker 8 Robert, can you help me or can you not?

Speaker 15 Yeah, I can, but I mean, like I told you a couple times already.

Speaker 8 We've been talking for like 30 minutes and you haven't told me anything.

Speaker 8 What do you know what what's the story that you know about what happened to crystal?

Speaker 15 Come on, you know, I have told you things

Speaker 1 indirectly.

Speaker 6 Who killed Crystal?

Speaker 8 Just tell me,

Speaker 5 please.

Speaker 15 Who killed her?

Speaker 6 Yes.

Speaker 16 No, see, that that'll get me paid.

Speaker 15 We're fucking murdered.

Speaker 8 Which one do you want?

Speaker 15 Fuck you, mean, homie.

Speaker 8 I mean, do you what do you need for this information?

Speaker 8 I need money

Speaker 6 Every time I've ever thought this case is over, something pulls me back in. Every time I feel like I've hit a dead end, someone new comes forward.
And that's exactly what happened next.

Speaker 6 A local reached out to me. Someone who wasn't just repeating hearsay, someone who I very much trusted.
This was different. This person made some of the boldest claims I've ever heard in this case.

Speaker 6 And all these years later, being able to scan back through everything I I know, listening through all the tape, it's starting to paint a pretty clear picture.

Speaker 6 Allegations that could change everything we know about what happened to Crystal. And the moment I heard them, I knew I had to record it.

Speaker 12 I had heard the rumors about Catfish at this point.

Speaker 12 And they were all rumors to me.

Speaker 12 this guy ever hurting a fly.

Speaker 12 So, you know, I thought, you know, the rumors were just rumors at that point.

Speaker 12 Normal day, doing my shit.

Speaker 12 I get a call from Cap.

Speaker 12 Normal erratic.

Speaker 12 I really need you over here, man. Like, I know this, that, you know, I need you over here, this, that, that.

Speaker 12 Fox News did a report again a year after her missing. Uh, so, which might have, you know, got his uh

Speaker 12 conscience kicked it kicking in again or or I don't know what.

Speaker 12 Really need to talk to you about something, man.

Speaker 1 Blah blah blah.

Speaker 12 His normal rambling.

Speaker 12 Didn't make it over there until probably

Speaker 12 later that evening.

Speaker 12 He had just seen more

Speaker 12 mellow, calmed down,

Speaker 12 but still all over the place.

Speaker 12 Five minutes being there, you know, we s I I smoke weed and I drink beer. That's my fix.
So he did his thing, you know, cracked open his, you you know his famous stella artois

Speaker 12 I packed a few bongs and we sat down where we usually sit I grabbed one of his laptops started fucking around and he started talking to me

Speaker 12 and then out of nowhere he he

Speaker 12 opened up with a question

Speaker 12 and asked me if

Speaker 12 If someone was suffering in front of you,

Speaker 12 would you help them out?

Speaker 12 If someone in front of you was suffering, would you help them out?

Speaker 17 He's like, what do you mean, cat?

Speaker 15 I was like, no shit.

Speaker 17 Why? Or like, are you overdosing?

Speaker 5 Like, I thought, he's like, are you okay?

Speaker 12 Like, what's going on? He's like, no, I'm asking you.

Speaker 12 And I was like, yeah.

Speaker 12 He's like, not the way you're thinking.

Speaker 12 And then that's where it started

Speaker 15 There's five.

Speaker 12 There's five. I'm not sure who's involved in what.

Speaker 12 I do know who's involved in some things, but I do know that there's five total.

Speaker 12 Juddy Bryan, Kat. There was a guy.

Speaker 17 Rice.

Speaker 12 Rice came to my name

Speaker 12 as his name.

Speaker 12 He drove a blue pickup truck with the green patch on the side.

Speaker 12 He lives right down the street from Cat. I'm sure you've heard...

Speaker 12 Rice. I'm pretty sure it was Rice.

Speaker 15 I never

Speaker 1 heard how

Speaker 12 he got, they, sorry, they got

Speaker 12 her back to the house.

Speaker 12 But she was there.

Speaker 12 He had said they had kept her there for a while.

Speaker 12 two days

Speaker 12 and sexually abused her her for a while

Speaker 12 apparently one day she

Speaker 12 came to he said I don't know how he worded it uh came to

Speaker 12 or or or

Speaker 12 tried to escape off the drugs they were uh

Speaker 12 uh and that's when uh this

Speaker 12 his rice like I don't know why I keep saying rice

Speaker 15 um shot shot her

Speaker 15 um

Speaker 12 and it grazed her and she didn't pass

Speaker 12 right away

Speaker 12 is what he said. And that's when

Speaker 12 he said that's what I meant about the question.

Speaker 1 Um

Speaker 12 that's when Kat

Speaker 12 said he helped her when she was you know

Speaker 12 still alive after the first shot

Speaker 8 It was Rice who pulled the trigger first?

Speaker 12 The guy I'm thinking of.

Speaker 12 Yes, let's call him Rice.

Speaker 12 The guy with...

Speaker 12 Do I even...

Speaker 12 If I was there right now, I will never step foot in fucking Colorado again.

Speaker 12 But I could

Speaker 12 point where he lives,

Speaker 12 his car, his girlfriend. I just can't.
The names, the names, like...

Speaker 12 It's very traumatic out there for me after all this. So the names,

Speaker 12 that's what he said. He said that it hit her, but it did not kill her.

Speaker 12 She was on his floor.

Speaker 12 And

Speaker 12 he said it felt like an hour, but it was only a few minutes until he had decided to do what he did.

Speaker 8 Did Catfish tell you that he killed Crystal?

Speaker 12 No,

Speaker 12 in those words, no.

Speaker 12 Did he tell me everything that happened to her

Speaker 12 leading up to the night that she passed and how she passed? Absolutely. And where and how they did hide her? Yeah.

Speaker 12 He originally asked if someone was suffering, would you help them out?

Speaker 12 And then told me what happened and told me that he helped her. And then that was it.
Then that's when they went ahead and had to do what they had to do. So yes.

Speaker 12 I guess he did pull the killing blow.

Speaker 12 He shot her.

Speaker 12 He called it helped her out.

Speaker 12 And I knew what he meant.

Speaker 10 I'm sure he had told me that.

Speaker 12 I must have looked. I don't know.
He didn't go into too much detail after what happened after,

Speaker 12 like what they all did.

Speaker 12 He did tell me that they did.

Speaker 1 Oh, shit.

Speaker 12 They did

Speaker 1 separate her

Speaker 1 and

Speaker 12 place her in different places.

Speaker 12 His exact words were that they cut her apart and spread her through the mountains.
