Speaker 1 You know what's smart? Checking All State First for a quote that could save you hundreds on car insurance. You know what's not smart? Not checking what the theme is at the dance club.

Speaker 1 You thought it was country night and now you're the only cowboy at the disco. Yeah, checking first is smart.
So check All State First for a quote that could save you hundreds.

Speaker 1 You're in good hands with Allstate. Potential savings vary.

Speaker 1 Pretty little episode.

Speaker 1 Welcome to the Handsome Pod.

Speaker 1 I am your host, Fortune Feamster. And I am your host, Mae Martin.
And then Thomas is here, too. Hello.
We're keeping a handsome.

Speaker 1 Always. Can't help you.
I wear my handsome sweatpants all weekend. Oh, you did? I love them.
They're my favorite. When it starts to get chilly outside, it's time for my handsome pants.

Speaker 1 God, I like when it gets a little chilly.

Speaker 1 Yeah, I've been playing a lot of foosball late into the night

Speaker 1 and wearing a jacket to do it.

Speaker 1 I don't know how I'm bringing up foosball in reference to, like, I'm shoehorning it in.

Speaker 1 That's not even fine. You love foosball.
I love it. And I started watching a documentary about the history of foosball, and

Speaker 1 it's fascinating. Yeah.
Yeah. It was in the Second World War.
Soldiers went to Europe and it was huge in Europe and like France and stuff. And they, yeah, so they came over and brought it over here.

Speaker 1 And then,

Speaker 1 and then it's like video killed the radio star. Once, once video game machines came in, it just like eliminated all those buildings became arcades.
And anyway. Oh, wow.
Yeah. Well, look at that.

Speaker 1 Main pact.

Speaker 1 I always play, it was my, my friend Matt, who lives with me. It was his birthday yesterday.
So obviously we're playing some foos.

Speaker 1 And then this trash talk character came out of me that was kind of like Debbie the hairdresser. Cause every time he'd lose a point, I'd go, oh, and on his birthday too.
Oh, isn't it a shame?

Speaker 1 The birthday boys.

Speaker 1 It was so,

Speaker 1 I don't know where it came from. It was so cruel.
Did it get him off his game? Yeah, it really rattled.

Speaker 1 He beats me every time. So the only way I can get get in his head is trash talk.

Speaker 1 How are you?

Speaker 1 I'm good. I'm gearing up for Thanksgiving.
We'll be next week. Yeah.

Speaker 1 Now, I know, obviously,

Speaker 1 that's not a holiday you grew up with. I forgot.

Speaker 1 Now that you're in the States, do you do something for Thanksgiving? Well, we have it in Canada. It's just in a different month, right? Thomas is, is it? Yeah, it's in October.
It's in October. And

Speaker 1 usually, I do something for it, but maybe not this year. But

Speaker 1 yeah, yeah, I think I should find somewhere and do like a friend's giving. Yeah, I love it.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Yeah, because there's no pressure to give gifts.
It's just I love that.

Speaker 1 I don't mind, because I don't mind buying people gifts. I want people, you know, I want to be generous for sure.
I just, I'm not always like, I just don't always know what to buy people.

Speaker 1 So Christmas is a lot of pressure. Birthdays is way too much pressure because I have a good friend's birthday soon, and I'm just like, I have no idea what to get.
Yeah.

Speaker 1 For Thanksgiving, I'm excited because in the last,

Speaker 1 gosh, since pre-COVID, I have not had a holiday with my family. No way.
Yeah, I realized it. I had seen my mom on Christmas Eve,

Speaker 1 but just her, and then had flown out thing uh Christmas Day

Speaker 1 we just started doing other things and now

Speaker 1 that I'm it's me um I'm gathering my family I rented a house uh in my hometown

Speaker 1 and everybody's all the family's coming because you know with my mom being sick

Speaker 1 I'm just trying to make things a little more special when I can. We're also planning an 80th birthday party for her whole new year.

Speaker 1 God, yeah, you've got to make some memories and just

Speaker 1 yeah, I'm trying to make memories because, you know, hopefully she's around for a long time, but

Speaker 1 I just don't want to, you know,

Speaker 1 not

Speaker 1 do cool things with everybody when we can. Yeah.
Well, Thanksgiving will be fun. How many people are you going to have?

Speaker 1 It'll be like 13 of us. Fun.
Not all staying at this house, but

Speaker 1 eating together. Yeah, fun.
Yeah. Do you?

Speaker 1 turkey uh fucks me up does it you're one of those people that like gets super tired yeah but maybe i'm just one of those people that makes a big deal out of it like oh i've got a turkey i'm tired yeah

Speaker 1 i don't feel like it does too much to me i like to i don't go too crazy on the thanksgiving food i eat a plate of it and then i go for leftovers later that night leftovers are fucking good yeah yeah yeah all right well i don't i don't I, that makes me think I should host something up at my place.

Speaker 1 I should make it a thing. I know.
Well, you got the place now. Yeah.
Yeah. Friendsgiving is really fun too.

Speaker 1 When I was in my 20s, I had two roommates and my roommate Steve and I, who I just saw in Atlanta, he and I used to host friendsgivings at our house.

Speaker 1 And those are some of my favorite memories I've ever had because I was too broke to fly home for Thanksgiving. It was too close to Christmas.
Yeah. And I would fly home for Christmas.

Speaker 1 So the family would be Christmas. and then Friendsgiving and we would all

Speaker 1 like Steve and I would be in charge of the turkey and drinks and everybody else would bring the side dishes. Yeah.
It's good. It's pretty fun.
I think you should do it.

Speaker 1 Have you ever heard of a frozen Charlotte? What's that? It's like they used to hide a little porcelain doll inside of a cake. And then if you get the

Speaker 1 frozen Charlotte, you're,

Speaker 1 I guess, the king. I've heard of a king cake, which is a similar thing.
It's a New Orleans thing. Yeah, I don't think we do enough hiding things in food.

Speaker 1 I mean, it's like I would be too nervous to break a tooth. Yeah, that's true.
I don't want to bite down on anything. Yeah.

Speaker 1 Okay,

Speaker 1 I won't prank you. All right.
I appreciate it. Well, let me know if you end up doing something.
Yeah. Should we see what people want to know?

Speaker 2 Hello, handsomes. This is Abby from Southern Illinois.
And my question for you, as we are getting closer to the holiday season,

Speaker 2 what is the gift that was your most favorite to give someone else? Like the one that you were so excited to give them that maybe you gave it early or you almost let the secret spill a million times?

Speaker 1 Ooh.

Speaker 1 That's good. I mean,

Speaker 1 I have a my friend Joe who wrote Feel Good With Me, he and I,

Speaker 1 I think I've talked about this before, that he did this painting called Zorg, and it's just this really grotesque face.

Speaker 1 And he just did it one night when we were hanging out and painting and forgot about it. But it's become like a, like, I had t-shirts made, and then I mailed, I mailed them to his roommates.

Speaker 1 And so those presents are always my favorites. Like on his birthday, he went to the pub and they had pre-arranged that like the bartender was wearing a Zorg t-shirt.
Yeah.

Speaker 1 Things like that.

Speaker 1 But also recently, I have a friend who's, whose mom is actually very sick and she's been really stressed. And

Speaker 1 so I got her, I like got her an Airbnb really close to the hospital and her parents. And that felt good because it was like practical and helpful.
Yeah. That's really sweet.
Yeah. What about you?

Speaker 1 I was trying to think, like,

Speaker 1 what present has stood out? Oh my gosh. It's like always the more personal ones, right? But

Speaker 1 then that gets harder to do. Yeah, there was one that came to mind, but I'm not going to share that one.

Speaker 1 I did date someone who I had never really bought like a nice,

Speaker 1 I had not been in a ton of serious stuff. And not that this was like super serious, but I really liked this person.
And I bought her a nice coat.

Speaker 1 And my friend, my best friend helped me pick it out. And I was so proud of this because it was like classy yeah

Speaker 1 and i just had never given a woman a nice present like this before

Speaker 1 and it always and i was just so pumped about it and um

Speaker 1 uh and i think and she loved it and i think we

Speaker 1 broke up like a month later

Speaker 1 but she still has she told me she still has the coat really she's still rocking she still has it and loves it so that makes it was not a waste.

Speaker 1 It makes me feel good that she still enjoys it and that it's a fond memory for her too. Yeah, that's nice and romantic.
And it's hard buying clothes for people. Oh, my, I never, ever, ever do it.
And

Speaker 1 it was just something that happened to work. And my friend.

Speaker 1 nailed it with that one. And yeah, it just made me very, like, I felt like an adult for the first time of like, look at me buying a nice present for someone.
Yeah, that's nice. Yeah.

Speaker 1 It'd be nice to get someone a puppy or something, but that's a big risk.

Speaker 1 You have to really know that

Speaker 1 they want that.

Speaker 1 You have to know that they want that, and you would have to know like a lot of like, this is the breed and this is the, and they're up for it.

Speaker 1 And, but man, that would be a tough present to buy someone. I also, I've heard you're not supposed to buy people art

Speaker 1 because art is so subjective. Oh, really? Not to say you can't have like, I've had people had like pictures like painted of like Biggie or something.
That's adorable, but just like art in general.

Speaker 1 Okay. I'm just going over all the times I've given people art and then realizing I've never seen it in their home.

Speaker 1 Well, because yeah, it's like you might think it's like amazing, and other person's like, yeah, yeah, but you never know. Some people might love your taste in art as well.

Speaker 1 Some people loved La La Land and I hated it. You know, and to each their own.
Yeah.

Speaker 1 Let's hear Abby's answer.

Speaker 2 My answer for that is: I actually have two, both going to the same person, my wife.

Speaker 2 The first would be one year for her birthday. I threw her a surprise taskmaster birthday.
May, I'm sure you appreciate that.

Speaker 2 And I actually sculpted her a life-size trophy of Greg Davies' head.

Speaker 2 And the second gift would be that I actually, for Christmas this year, got her surprise tickets to go see Fortune in Indianapolis in January.

Speaker 1 Oh my gosh.

Speaker 2 And if you guys air this before Christmas, you guys will actually get to be the ones to tell her about the surprise, which would be kind of fun too.

Speaker 1 Surprise, surprise.

Speaker 2 Thank you guys so much and stay handsome.

Speaker 1 Surprise from Indianapolis, my friend. Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1 Exciting. That's amazing.
Like experience gifts are always the best.

Speaker 1 I love them. Let's just encourage people to buy comedy tickets all the time.

Speaker 1 I will say they, and I don't just say this because they're our shows, but every person that has come to my show who has gotten it as a gift is like this was the best gift oh that's nice because you're with usually your friend or your partner you know on a date and um and it's and if it's a friend they're they've had a blast with each other if it's a date that they feel connected to their partner they're laughing it's fun i think it's such a great gift Yeah, it is.

Speaker 1 Yeah. And there's a nice,

Speaker 1 I think your shows are the same, but there's like a nice community vibe there. People are friendly and there's, I don't know, people make friends in the lineup for the bathroom and stuff.

Speaker 1 It's yeah, yeah. It is like such a good vibe.
Yeah. So you'll, you'll leave.
If you come to any of our shows, you'll leave very happy. Yeah, that's a good surprise.

Speaker 1 I can see, and my Taskmaster trophy is there, the big head. That's right.

Speaker 1 And that I have a, I know a lot of people who do Taskmaster themed parties because it's so, it's so fun. Yeah.
Yeah. There's a board game, I think.
Yeah. That's awesome.
Thanks, Abby. Yeah.

Speaker 1 You know what's smart? Checking All State First for a quote that could save you hundreds on car insurance. You know what's not smart?

Speaker 1 Not checking that you packed your tripod before agreeing to make a video of your nephew's school play.

Speaker 1 Nobody warned you that the play was two hours long with no intermission, and your arms are getting a little tired. Yeah, check in first is smart.

Speaker 1 So check All State First for a quote that could save you hundreds. You're in good hands with Allstate.
Potential savings vary, subject to terms, conditions, and availability.

Speaker 1 All-state North American Insurance Company and Affiliates, North Brook, Illinois.

Speaker 1 Should we hear another one? Mm-hmm.

Speaker 3 Hello, Tig, May, and Fortune. My name is Sam, a handsome little they-them from Hamilton, Ohio.
First of all, I absolutely love the podcast.

Speaker 3 Second of all, Fortune, I'm coming to see you in Cincinnati in January, and I cannot wait.

Speaker 1 Very cool.

Speaker 3 My question for you guys: I'm not particularly a Disney fan, but I recently posted on social media a picture of myself in a costume as a Disney character.

Speaker 3 And a lot of my fellow non-binary friends were like, oh my God, that's my favorite character, too.

Speaker 3 So I'm particularly interested in May's answer on this, but I'd love to hear from all three of you guys. Who is your favorite Disney character and why? Thanks and love the show.

Speaker 1 Well, I

Speaker 1 really identify with Lumiere the candle.

Speaker 1 And so, and usually in Disney movies, because it's so gendered, the old ones at least that I grew up with, usually there's some like inanimate object character or an animal of some kind that I relate to heavily.

Speaker 1 So, yeah, okay, because Lumiere is kind of a non-binary icon in my mind.

Speaker 1 And a good singer. Great singer.
So warm, so welcoming.

Speaker 1 Guests. Guests to be.

Speaker 1 Who else? There's Abu the monkey from Aladdin.

Speaker 1 Yeah, I always like this, the, the, like, um,

Speaker 1 the characters that aren't involved with the love plot. Same.
Because they're, they're the fun ones. Yeah.
Like in the little mermaid, the crab, what's his name? Oh, Sebastian? Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 1 Yeah, you see her floating there along the way. She don't got a lot to say.

Speaker 1 Something about her.

Speaker 1 Yeah. And you don't know why, but you're dying to try.
You wanna kiss a girl.

Speaker 1 Oh, you really know it. Oh my god, yeah.
Yeah.

Speaker 1 Yeah, Flounder as well.

Speaker 1 I guess that's a little boy character, but yeah, yeah, the crab, Yago, the yeah, the sidekicks are the funniest, always sidekicks are in the Lion King, um, the Warthog. Yeah, the Warthog and

Speaker 1 Zazu, the Touken. Well, I've never seen a king or beast with quite so little head.

Speaker 1 I want to be your mighty king, so it's beware.

Speaker 1 Never seen the

Speaker 1 little hair. Do you know who did the voice of Adult Simba?

Speaker 1 No.

Speaker 1 Well, I'll tell you. Tell me.
Matthew Broderick. Oh, really? Yeah.
Good little trivia there. That is.
There's so many good songs in that one. It means no worries for the rest of your days.

Speaker 1 Okay, I guess we need to do Disney karaoke one night. Yes, we do.
Like little musical theater kit. A whole new world.
Come on. Oh, yeah, come on.
And then Ursula from Little Mermaid.

Speaker 1 Ursula is a gay icon. All the villains are pretty gay.

Speaker 1 Yeah, and

Speaker 1 Flotsam and Jetsum, her little eels.

Speaker 1 Shafar is pretty gay.

Speaker 1 Yeah, I'm going to go with Lumier, though, in terms of gender identity. That's who I identify with.
Mine's Sebastian from Little Mermaid. Yeah, I like that.
But our new, or I mean,

Speaker 1 my soon-to-be favorite is Nibbles from Zootopia 2. That's going to be my favorite, too.

Speaker 1 That's your character's name? It's my character in Zootopia 2 and Zootopia 2 comes out. I can't remember if it's November 26th or 29th, but soon.
It's soon. And you got all your handsome hosts in it.

Speaker 1 And

Speaker 1 all of us are in it. And my friend sent me a picture.
His kid went to Pop Mart.

Speaker 1 And there was already a

Speaker 1 figurine.

Speaker 1 the action figure thing of my nibbles character. What? Already? Uh-huh.
That's insane. I was like, oh my gosh, this is so cool.
I'm still hoping that we're going to be at the premiere together.

Speaker 1 I know. I'm trying to get off work.
Yeah.

Speaker 1 But yeah.

Speaker 1 Should we hear Sam's answer? Yeah.

Speaker 3 My answer is Peter Pan. There's just something about his energy and his zest for life and his enthusiasm of like being playful and silly that I just really love.
I'm very playful and silly myself.

Speaker 3 So very fun.

Speaker 3 And yeah, well, apparently a lot of other non-binary folks love Peter Pan as well.

Speaker 2 So there you go. Thanks, guys.

Speaker 1 Yeah,

Speaker 1 I completely forgot. Of course, Peter Pan, I want to be so badly.
And yeah, there's definitely like a queer vibe about Peter. Like a sort of cheeky little

Speaker 1 I could totally see you playing Peter Pan.

Speaker 1 I would love to play Peter Pan. That would be fun.
I'd want to play him as kind of a rebel.

Speaker 1 Like

Speaker 1 tortured. Yeah.

Speaker 1 Let's hear another one.

Speaker 2 Hello, May Fortune and Tig. This is Amira.
I am a handsome listener, pretty little lady, originally from Durham, North Carolina.

Speaker 2 And I am a big fan of the pod and you three individually. And I am sent to get a message today asking for some advice.
Yes.

Speaker 2 I have just graduated college. I am 23 and I have moved 7,000 miles away from my home on the East Coast to Japan, where I'm working my first real job.

Speaker 2 And I am coming to terms with the fact that I think what I want to do with my life is do creative things, art things, theater things.

Speaker 2 And I'm 23 and life is a bit messy. And it's just like, ah, like, where do I start? Like, how do you start?

Speaker 2 You know, you're supposed to do something, but it's scary and you need a job and you have to make funny. And my time is running out.
But yeah, so how do you start? That's my question.

Speaker 1 Oh, man. That's a great question.
How cool that you're in Japan and like,

Speaker 1 you know, finding yourself. And I guess I'm assuming that what, what you did in college isn't in the arts.
And this is like a revelation.

Speaker 1 I think, I mean, it depends what aspect of the arts, but for me, like, I got a job in a box office of a comedy venue, working in the box office and, and just went to see stuff as much as I can.

Speaker 1 So I was, so I was in the like immersed in the world of it.

Speaker 1 Like getting an adjacent day job, you know, so that you're around it. Yeah.
That could be good. What about you? What do you think? Yeah, I mean, well, it's always helpful having a focus.

Speaker 1 Like, if you know, like, this is the field I want to be in. I'm not sure exactly how to get there, but like, this is the goal.

Speaker 1 It's, I think it's harder when you, it's like, I don't know what I want to do. Then it's like, where do you even begin? So I think narrowing it down in that way is good.
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 1 Getting an adjacent job is helpful. Um, I was an entertainment journalist first and I knew like, this is not what I want to do, but I'm in the business talking to people doing the thing I want to do.

Speaker 1 Yeah.

Speaker 1 So I can like pick their brain. I can learn more about the business in a way where like I understand it, but I don't have the opportunity yet to be in it, but this is a way to like be around it.
Yeah.

Speaker 1 And then I took a lot of classes. Yeah, that's the thing.
So I can get better in that field. Yeah.
Classes are, you meet people that end up becoming your peers and colleagues and collaborators.

Speaker 1 Like you meet your cohort and you could still have a day job for a bit, but be taking classes and transitioning.

Speaker 1 Because if you took some sort of class in the arts, you know, maybe like, oh, that person ends up knowing this person. Oh, this art company is looking for this or this person

Speaker 1 needs help with their project. I mean, then you're meeting other people that are like, like-minded in that world and you just never know where that will lead.
Yeah.

Speaker 1 And I think, like, I think acting is particularly hard because you're, it's reliant on other people giving you work and auditioning and stuff. But some of the other ones, like, I, I,

Speaker 1 you can make your own, you can, like, go to a pub and say, I want to book the venue one night in six months, and then advertise and have a night. Like, you can be proactive and make your own stuff.

Speaker 1 Um, yeah, so maybe that's is that advice? I think so. Yeah.

Speaker 1 And also just set, I think just setting in general

Speaker 1 with specific

Speaker 1 goals you want to hit can help you work towards something. Yeah.
And find a buddy who also wants to get into it.

Speaker 1 And then you guys can go and see stuff together and go and, because sometimes if you're like, oh, I want to do comedy, so I'm going to go see a bunch of shows.

Speaker 1 It's intimidating just hanging out afterwards by yourself and trying to meet people. But if you go with someone, you can.
You can tag team people. For sure.
Love it. Mira.
Love it. Yeah.

Speaker 1 Also, you're young. Enjoy Japan.
Yeah, for sure. I don't think there's any pressure to figure it out yet.
No, man. You got to pay your bills, obviously.
That's, you know. Yeah.

Speaker 1 And honestly, you don't get to necessarily make money right away doing the thing you want to do. Sometimes you have to do just a job

Speaker 1 to pay the bills while still having that goal of these other things. Sometimes life just happens.
So just be patient with yourself. Yeah, big time.

Speaker 1 That was lovely it was lovely we want people to keep uh sending us questions advice whatever you want speakpipe.com slash handsome pod don't forget to uh get some handsome merch for these holidays coming up yeah and some tickets to shows amazing going on tour i'm on tour please ticks doing a bunch of shows so yeah And maybe write a little card for Thomas, too.

Speaker 1 That's right. Write a little card for Thomas.
And I hope everyone has a great holiday. We'll talk to people before then in our regular episode.
But yeah, just a time to be thankful.

Speaker 1 And I'm thankful for you. And

Speaker 1 I'm thankful for you. And for the pod, and

Speaker 1 for everyone that listens. And yes, until next time,

Speaker 1 keep it pretty handsome.

Speaker 1 Handsome is hosted by me, Fortune Feemster, Tig Notaro, and Mae Martin. The show is produced, recorded, and edited by Thomas Woulette.

Speaker 1 Not checking that you've got some bubble bath before kicking off your Sunday morning relaxation ritual. I love taking a bath, but it's just not the same without some bubbles.

Speaker 1 Yeah, checking first is smart. So check All State First for a quote that could save you hundreds.
