LA is my home, my beloved community and like so many people here my heart is broken by the devastation of the fires that are still going on as we drop this episode. If anything, this is a great time for all of us - in LA or not, to pause and think about having emergency plans in place in case we need them because life can change in a split second - and also learn some basic ideas on how to keep our stress in check in situations like this one. My heart goes out to everyone who lost their homes and to the first responders - and I am happy to see this coomunity coming together as best as it can to help those who need help right now. Hey, everyone. We had a different episode planned for Cat of the Loose this week, but because of the ongoing LA fires, we decided we could not ignore what's going on here in LA, and we had to do an episode about the seriousness of the situation.
Los Angeles is my home, Beverly Hills, to be more exact.

It's my beloved community.

It's where I work.

It's where I play.

It's where beloved community. It's where I work.
It's where I play. It's where all of my closest friends live.
It's where my companies are. It's the place that I feel at home.
Although I'm not native of LA, it's where I really, really, really, really call home. and the past few days have been nothing but a roller coaster of emotions.
I am feeling insanely blessed and insanely lucky because Beverly Hills has not been directly affected by the fires. I have a few very close friends who have lost their homes, everything they've had.
And of course, there is thousands and thousands of families out there who have lost their homes and everything they had. As of now, as I am dropping this episode, the fires are not completely contained.
So we are just hoping and praying that the situation gets under control as fast as possible. But I think whether or not you live in Los Angeles, this is a wonderful time for all of us to stop for a moment and think that it's pretty obvious that life can change in a split second.
You can literally be sitting down at home, at work, walking your dog, doing whatever it is that you do. Kids in school, going about your business.
And something can happen, whether it is fire, whether it is an earthquake, whether it is violence, terrorism, somebody that you love dying. Things happen unexpectedly and life changes.
And most of us don't plan for it. So I think this is a great, great time that we all should pause and think about, well, maybe I need to have a plan in case of any emergency.
What do I take with me? Or do I have the most important paperwork in my life ready? Do I have a plan in action? What do I do with my kids? What do I do with my pets? And so forth. Because when we are gone, the people that stay behind suffer less, the more well prepared we are.
So I want to start for all of us here in LA, but for everyone out there listening. This is a very, very simple plan that all the experts are saying that we can all put in place and learn from the tragedy that is happening here in case you don't have it.
Look at this five simple piece, people and pets. Look at your people and your pets in your household and just have the most important things related to them ready to go.
For example, a tiny little bit of food, a little bit of water, medication. If you have pets, you know, a carrier, leash, any special needs items, anything that you absolutely cannot live without, ready to go in a little bag.
Another P, prescriptions. If you or anybody in your family takes any prescriptions that you absolutely cannot live without, make sure they are always together in one place in case you need to evacuate or go anywhere really, really quickly.
Papers, such as, for example, your passport or your driver's license or any kind of insurance papers, either take pictures of everything at least and have them on your phone, or if you can, have them all together like in a folder or something, somewhere that you can literally grab them in a few seconds and take them with you. Personal needs, as little as possible.
Have a bag ready with some personal necessities like miniature toiletries, a flashlight, batteries, a very small first aid kit, maybe a little bit of cash and a portable charger in case whatever emergency you're going through, such as what's going on in LA now, you run out of electricity like thousands and thousands of homes here now. And another thing that you absolutely cannot replace if there is anything priceless in your life, like, I don't know, a wedding ring, something that your mom that passed away left behind, some family heirloom, family jewelry, something really, really important.
If it's your family photos, maybe you can have them all in a little pen drive or hard drive. Just try to think about something that you absolutely would not want to live without.
This is definitely a great time when you are not going through an emergency to think about if you can possibly have all of these things in place and ready to go. Hopefully you never need to use them, but this is a really great idea because obviously this fire caught thousands and thousands and thousands of people off guard.
I don't think anybody ever thinks that they're going to go through this. And if you lose everything that you took a lifetime to build and you don't have time to pick up anything, it's very painful.
It's very heartbreaking. So may this be a great lesson for all of us.
And the more planned you are, the less you're going to suffer. And I would like to mention that I'm trying to do my part as little bit as I can, but it was really important to me to help my community.
So all proceeds from advertisement of this episode are going to the victims of the fire, people who lost their homes. We will look into what their immediate needs are and allocate this money accordingly.

They create this incredible, incredible yoga retreats, wellness retreats. I've been to a bunch of them with Elisa and our dear friend Brooke Burke.
And Elisa, you're in Colorado and I invited you to do this last minute episode. Thank you so much for joining us last minute.
It's such an honor to have you here. Thank you so much, Kat, for having me and for the amazing introduction.
I'm very happy to be in the wellness space, especially in this particular moment, because I hope I can make a difference into recovering and coping. It's devastating what we are going through.
And even if I am far away in Colorado and I'm speaking from the comfort of my home, the biggest part of the Uganda community is in the Los Angeles area. And many of our friends have been impacted from the fires.
Our retreat partner and beloved friend Brooke Burke has not lost her house in Malibu. However, there's no gas, no electricity, no power.
The water is contaminated. So they all had to evacuate.
Yeah. And the emotional distress, in addition to possible physical injuries of losing your house, losing your home, are devastating.
Because when you lose your residence, of course you lose things of value, possessions. But what you lose and what is the most important thing, you lose the place of security, the place of comfort, and the place of safety where you might grow your family.
So you not only care for yourself, but you provide for your family a comfortable, safe space.

So the emotional standpoint behind this situation is unbelievable.

And we all know that this is the best moment where friends, family and community can come in and help. They can make a lot of difference.
Oh, my God. Absolutely.
Same. Although I'm very lucky that my home in Beverly Hills did not get affected.
I have several friends who literally lost everything, everything. And we cannot wrap our heads yet trying to figure out how do we help.
But I brought you in because even for people that don't live in L.A., I think this is a really good time to stop and maybe regroup and ask ourselves, how do we like in a time like this when stress is at an all time high? Right. And stress kills.
Stress literally sends people to the hospital. And this is one thing that I love about you and I love about Brooke and I love the wellness retreats that you guys do when I participate is because it helps us stay centered.
Do you have any suggestions, anybody out there listening that people can do at home or with friends or in a park, anything to like relax or basically try to regroup their minds in the middle of this chaos?

absolutely so provided that you know everything that i'm saying comes from the deepest part of my heart and i am not in their position

and i do hope that they are safe, they're not injured. One of the best advice that I have and that I particularly use as a free tool in my daily routine when above, you know, these circumstances, but we all leave a very stressful life, is to reconnect in nature.
Nature, breathing in nature, practicing any sort of activity that could be a simple walk, walking your dog, sitting on the bench and observing the nature, listening to the birds chirping and seeing what surrounds you, if possible, naturally, you know, for you to get out. It will give you that sense of more accomplishment and more peace because nature has very important healing properties.
And walking in nature is free. It's something that we can all do.
Obviously, now the air in Los Angeles is tough and rough to breathe. So I'm not encouraging anybody to hike or do a strenuous sport outside.
But when possible, when all this crisis will subside and you will have more mental clarity, even going back to your regular exercises, because working out is one amazing tool that we can use for our mental health. And everyone's different.
So the workout could be a yoga session, a Pilates session, or just meditation where you sit in calmness and you try to breathe, maybe deep breathing. These are free techniques, free tools that we have in our toolbox.
What I would also like to say is I experienced in many of my retreats when amazing healers like Brooke Burke host Breathwork.

It's such a cathartic experience.

And people let go.

People release.

People feel bad and they cry.

So while I see releasing and letting go be very good for your mental stress, at the same time, give yourself permission to feel good. so if you are doing something that gives you joy or if you're going through a period of joy

even when you're coping with loss, allow yourself to feel good. Allow yourself to smile and do not and don't ever feel guilty of being joyful and do things that brings you joy.
It could be surround yourself with children, with kids, play with them, put aside your computer, put aside technology and avoid maybe for a little period of time to listen to the news because it could be very frustrating. And in your daily life, make small decisions.
Yeah, I love that you said that because the exercise, I agree, I think it's crucial. And right now in L.A., there are so many people that are panicking because they like they said the air is bad.
They're like literally staying home. But I think it's so important to go out there and do some form of exercise.
Like you said, walk your dog, move, go to a yoga class, do something, right? No matter what it is. And I want to mention that even you, for example, last week, there are a lot of people such as yourself offering online courses, right? Like online yoga classes, online breath work.
So that's an alternative for people that are here in LA and don't feel comfortable being out and about. But it's so important to be able to move and do something because I agree, for me, it's the number one thing that relieves my stress.
So I absolutely love that idea so much. I agree.
You know, we went through this with COVID, where we had to pause and bring our life into our households. And there are millions of digital platforms where you can work out, you can attend a breath work, a meditation session.
So now everything has been brought digitally. I know it's not the same as working out with your workout buddy or at your favorite yoga studio or fitness center.
But in this interim situation, just make the best that you can. So play small and lower even your expectations before.
Maybe you were like a diehard wellness person where like from 5 a..m to 7 a.m you were like journaling meditating and doing all the things small things and celebrate small wins yeah I love that and I also love that you mentioned if you want to cry cry right yeah because a lot I my house hasn't been affected but like I said a lot of my friends lost their homes when I the first few days when I was looking at the pictures on tv and thinking about all my friends I want I was I cried for days for sure I spent three four days at night and I needed that because how can we not be touched by it I think it's important to not be embarrassed in terms of letting your emotions go. And I feel so many people bottle it up inside.
And if you just keep it inside, it makes the stress worse, right? Worse. Yes, yes.
Make sure that you give yourself plenty of rest.

And possibly, I truly want to say this, try to stay away from those situations and those substances like alcohol or wine or drugs that you think they can help you. but they are mood altering substances and they will do very, a lot of harm to you in the long run.
Yeah. Okay.
So be healthy, continue on your healthy journey. And there are a few things that don't cost anything that you can continue to do, which is your sleep hygiene.
Try to sleep. If you're tired and you've never

taken a nap during the day, go take a nap. If you have the possibility, if you still have a house or

if you are in a hotel. And then when you wake up, you're more clear.
Do some meditation or just play

with your children. Go outside if you can.
Move your body because adrenaline will give you that boost of joy and good motivation. Also, if you're a parent, you have a lot of responsibility because you have to continue to give guidance and support to your children.
Yeah. And it's good to share all this information with them because you're treating them as young adults and you have to make sure that they know what they are going through.
But at the same time, you are their main source of security. Yeah, I love all these ideas you're giving.
And I completely agree with you. I think in times of severe stress, it's the worst idea, like a lot of people do is like, Oh, my God, I'm gonna get drunk.
I think this is the time for you to honor your body and take care of yourself and be healthier because stress debilitates your body so much, right? I don't think it's a good idea to go out there and go crazy and get drunk every day. On the contrary, it's a great time to, if you are on a wellness routine, to keep it.
And if you're not in a wellness routine, maybe it's a good time to start one. Yeah, find your purpose.
And maybe it's like the time, the best time for you to build the resilience. And if you have a very good job and focus on your job, or if you're a full-time mom, you can definitely care for others and make sure that your cup is always filled because you cannot pour from an empty cup.
It might sound like a sentence that we hear a lot of times, but how can you move towards something? How can you move towards your goal if you don't have energy, if you are completely depleted? It's very worth mentioning that, yeah, you cannot pour out of an empty cup. You got to take care of yourself, especially in times of severe stress.

For sure. Yeah.
Very knowing that it's very hard. And you and I are having this conversation trying to help.
And the last thing that I would love to share is you and I are here.

Reach out to friends, vent, use them, family, just call them and even take advantage of people's offering support. It will, because, you know, after the fires will be gone, hopefully soon, the road to recovery is going to be long.
So I don't want to be here for you right now, just because you are immediately impacted. I'm here for you in six months from now, in a year from now.
So in the long run, you are from Brazil, I'm from Italy, and we value relationships. Oh my God.
Yes, yes, for sure. And I think this is the time like that you like you said you have to be there for your friends for the community if this community is suffering it's like people are in pain you walk on the streets and you everybody's like quiet and somber but at the same time it's really beautiful to watch because it's a community that is coming together for one another you You know, you see thousands and thousands of people helping each other.

So there is always the silver lining.

And like you said, I hope these fires are gone very, very soon.

I am so grateful for your beautiful words because I know so many people out there are like,

oh, my God, what do I do?

What do I do?

What do I do?

And I think they forget that it's the simple things.

Like you said, don't forget to walk, a little bit of exercise, breathe. I saw that you guys did an online exercise like last week, right? A few days ago, four days ago online.
We hosted a free global meditation, which was guided. and it put us in perspective of us being a beautiful beach in Malibu and seeing the fires going away.
And we embraced healthy and positive thoughts in this short amount of time. We also had another person coming in that particular meditation and she chanted.
So she sang a song, which was in Celtic and Irish, and it was a beautiful invocation to rain. So we prayed for rain.
We visualized rain and we sort of did like a visualization yeah of something beautiful so we would love to have just enough rain not too much because then we can have like but we could definitely use that here right now oh my goodness yes we could i do have a free um recording for that if you will want me to send it and share it with everybody. That would be amazing.

and possibly breath work um so thank you i will be sharing all these free events with you and uh um it's important to just like build resilience and if this is a time where um facing your trauma will shape will shape your I mean, we've gone through a lot with COVID. I know.
This is way more. But I've never seen such a big community giving.

Everything else dissolves. In the face of loss, may we root ourselves, not in possessions, but in presence, in the fleeting beauty of connection, in knowing that even when everything is gone, what truly matters can never be taken away.
And I think this is what truly matters now, is that people are coming together to help those who need it the most. people in LA who lost their homes, who lost everything they work really hard for, need love, need kindness, need money, need clothes, need help, need positive energy coming their way.
They definitely don't need criticism right now. So it's really beautiful to see so many people coming together to help.
I guess that's the silver lining. And my heart goes out to everyone who is going through this.
And I am really hoping this is the end of it. And here's to many brighter days in the future.
