Welcome back to the Toast Patreon. Happy December.
It's a December.
Speaker 1 It's a December to remember here
Speaker 1
at Patreon. Not a sale.
The price is fixed.
Speaker 4 Oh, yeah. Not a sale.
Speaker 1 Which works in times of inflation
Speaker 1 and in times of sales.
Speaker 4 In times of surplus and in times of dir plus. What are the opposite of surpluses?
Speaker 1 Welcome back, you guys. We are doing a very fun episode today because Claudia and I just wanted to do some girly swirly chit chat.
Speaker 4 We had like planned like a big themed episode, but we weren't ready to record it today wait also speaking of girly swirly can I tell everyone my journey with chat GPT?
Speaker 4 So I don't know if you guys know this but like a while ago
Speaker 4 Revlon came out with a lipstick called girly swirly and actually somebody from communications in Revlon like sent it to us being like isn't this amazing and I'm like you stealing our language without compensating us Yeah, we love it.
Speaker 4 Yeah, we actually reach out to our attorney who told us there's quite literally nothing we can do about it.
Speaker 4 I'm like if we wanted to go to court we don't um and it's just like a fun fact that if you go into literally any grocery store or drugstore that sells lipstick, you will find a lipstick called Girly Swirly.
Speaker 4 And
Speaker 1 some people didn't know that.
Speaker 4 No, because I didn't want to give the brand like anything.
Speaker 3 Right.
Speaker 1 We didn't promote it. We weren't getting paid.
Speaker 4
So I saw somebody in our Facebook group. was like, oh my God, was this a partnership? Anybody know that there's a lipstick called Girly Swirly? Like the girls must be freaking.
We're not.
Speaker 4 And I was reading comments and people were like, well, they didn't create Girly Swirly. I'm like,
Speaker 4 if we didn't create it, then who did? Like, we literally did.
Speaker 1
We, we did. We did.
It's our other childhood family that we've like popularized but not created.
Speaker 1 Swirly.
Speaker 1
Girly swirly. Like, you could walk it all the way back.
We did create it. I can understand why people would just assume it's become so big that, like,
Speaker 1 I understand like you thinking like it was bigger than I was used, yeah. But it's not.
Speaker 4 Um, and so I went to ChatGBT and I was like, hey, swirly, can you let me know who invented girly swirly?
Speaker 4 And ChatGBT was like, well, I believe there were like, you know, references to girly and swirly in some pop teen magazines in the early 2000s, but the phrase became widely popularized in 2020.
Speaker 4 And I said, oh, what happened?
Speaker 1 2020? You said the 2020s.
Speaker 4
Okay, then that's what it was. Sorry, I forget.
Okay. And I was like, oh, what happened in the 2020s?
Speaker 4 What made it popular? And they were like, oh, the internet, you know, like podcast and TikTok. And I was like, I actually said, someone's like, you have to correct ChatGBT.
Speaker 4
They're like, low-key, not smart. And I was like, hi, chat.
Actually, you're wrong. The podcasters, Jackie and Claudia Australia, of The Toast made it famous.
And he was like, you know what?
Speaker 4 You're right.
Speaker 4
And they were like, here's how it happened. You know, podcast audience becomes niche, niche audience becomes internet, whatever.
Hopefully, now, if you ask ChatGBT, I've like course corrected.
Speaker 1
Yeah, but we all know. We were there.
And if you really want to do your homework, like it's in the files. Everything.
Speaker 1 The receipts are online, as Heather Gay would see. Receipts, timeline, screenshots.
Speaker 2 No, that's not it.
Speaker 2 Evidence.
Speaker 3 That's how
Speaker 2 All of it.
Speaker 4 Receipts, proof, timeline.
Speaker 1 Screenshots, fucking everything, right?
Speaker 4 Fucking everything.
Speaker 1 I guess that was a viral sound at the time.
Speaker 1 I do want to update everyone because I belatedly have watched that season of Real Houses of Salt Lake City after mostly avoiding spoilers when it all happened.
Speaker 1 Now that I've watched that season, I've asked Claudia, like, what was the temperature of the country like when that came out?
Speaker 3 And Claude was like, oh my god, it was like scandal.
Speaker 1
It was the biggest thing. And even when I posted it on my story, the people were responding to me like receipts, timeline, proof.
I'm like, that was the quote you guys took away from it.
Speaker 1 I didn't realize that was like the money moment.
Speaker 4 Kind of like embedded in American culture now, much like girly swirly.
Speaker 1 Is receipts, timeline, proof, screenshots, fucking everything.
Speaker 1 So can I just share my thoughts on what I thought? Because I had an idea. Did you not?
Speaker 4 Did we not have this conversation?
Speaker 1 No, I hadn't seen the big reveal yet.
Speaker 2 Are you sure?
Speaker 3 Positive. Okay.
Speaker 1
Positive. I was just enjoying my season saying I'm Team Lisa Barlow.
She was on to Monica.
Speaker 1 And I had an idea that Monica was this insidious character and that she did something, some cyberbullying, but I didn't know the extent of it.
Speaker 1 And as I'm watching the season, I was like, oh, maybe she was just the one who sent Meredith that DM about Angie and like just made a fake burner account and was getting called out for it.
Speaker 1 But no, the fact that she was running like a real house ice of Salt Lake City specific
Speaker 1 fan account for bullying the girls, she was like, she was, she says she was one-sixth of it. And in her part, she was interested in bullying Genshin and Genshot only.
Speaker 3 Specifically.
Speaker 1 But like she was surrounding herself with the people who were bullying Whitney and Lisa.
Speaker 1 And and like that is so fucking crazy and so insane that Bravo let her on the show and she maintains that she told Bravo that she did this I would love to know if they knew how this slipped through the cracks but the whole season like her presence on the show was so weird yeah and she'll say she'll make it about money be like what because I don't have money no but a little bit because you don't have money it is a show about affluent women plenty of people like come on the show of different means and they have different things to bring to the table um she really didn't have much to bring to the table except for being obsessed with genshaw like that was it.
Speaker 1 All season, I was like not about her. I felt like she like went for like low blows, low-hanging fruit.
Speaker 1
She also like she thought she was like such a sleigh and she would like argue with people, but she would do the cheapest arguing tactic. Oh no, she's gonna be like, it's about money.
No.
